Oh I agree with everything you said. I never do trending, and never ever do more than 5%.
I just mean in the long run, I believe it will be looked back on as a huge mistake for eBay to have started it. It is the type of thing that can lead to a path where there is no coming back from. Absolutely opening Pandora’s Box, and I worry it will lead to folks leaving eBay if it keeps up, both sellers and as a result buyers.
Great episode guys!
Concerning promoted listings, ugh. Now eBay does indeed allow you promote up to 100%. It’s insane. You were talking about high trending rates also. I know of at least one category where it tried to pick 25% for me! I of course said no and didn’t even do it at all.
They used to have it capped at 20% but so many goobers were picking it that they lifted the maximum and raised it up all the way to 100%.
I was talking to a buddy the other day telling him that I’m tempted to do an experiment. To take an item I don’t care much about and promote it at 100%, have buyer pay shipping, and just see if it actually does sell super fast. I hate the whole program now. I think it’s one of the worst mistakes eBay has ever made.

A few weeks ago I bought a lot of around 300 or so hats for $60. I sold these two from that buy yesterday, well into profit…

I bought this at Goodwill on 12/30/18 for $1.99 and listed it for $149.95 the same night. When I bought it it was framed under glass but it was in really bad shape. I removed it from the frame in order to list it. It sold a few days ago for full price even though I had BO enabled, as I always do. I have collected old photographs for years now and rarely ever try to sell them. I think I’m going to be listing a lot more from my collection now though after this one sold. Like I do with most things, I’m listing them high and letting them sit. I’ve listed a number more from my collection since this one sold. I love working with items like this!

Here are a couple other images just to put it into perspective…

02/19/2019 at 11:10 am in reply to: How would you list this? Authentic 1960s Playboy Club Doorman's Hat. #57284I just recently listened to the podcast, thanks for the mention! I did list it, it’s up and running now. I went with $5,999.95 OBO in the end and I have 21 watchers so far. No offers yet, but I didn’t expect any action at all for a few weeks at least. Here is a link to it if any of you would like to just check it out…

I’ll let ya’ll know when I get any sort of action on it.

If you saw my store you’ll see I’m not afraid to price sky high with BO on everything. I have a full time job so right now I’m kinda forced to try to sell as few items as I can for as much as I can. I just don’t have the time to sell a bunch of items for just $10-$20, in terms of being able to ship them out and everything. I hope that changes in the future though. I know I’d technically do better to price things more reasonable. My method has worked alright for the last few years at least though.
Over the years my highest sold items are a vintage 1800s Aboriginal boomerang/throwing stick for around $900 and a vintage 1950s professional wrestling poster featuring the card for the show with an image of Gorgeous George for around $750. Most everything else has been $500 and down.

My question, I’m not entirely sure to be honest. I guess I’m just wanting to make sure I include the right information. My listings are usually more straight and to the point. I used to get really wordy on stuff but I cut that out a few years ago when my wife pointed it out to me. With this one, I feel like I kinda do need to include more information like the folks I’ve spoken to about it and that sort of thing.
My initial thought was to list it for $5999.95 and then put it on sale almost immediately to use that as a pull. I have no clue if that actually works though. I want to sell it, but I also don’t want it to sell too quick because I do think it could bring more eyes to my store. I’ve been on eBay since 1998, but have never had an item quite like this.
My “specialty” is vintage hats as well, so it kinda goes along with my overall theme. I have around 1,500 items listed and I’d say around 1,000 of those items listed are hats. Most are old trucker hats and the sort though, not really the “fancy” hat style, although I do have a small amount of those listed as well.
I paid $75 for this one, WAY more than I ever pay for single items and absolutely more than I ever pay for any sort of that. I try to keep my price per hat way low, $1 or less. It kills me to pay more than $1 for any hat so this was a big leap for me. I just had a hunch on this one though.
