Purchased 4 Marimekko vtg airline dishes for a total of $5. Sold separately for $22 each – took about a year to sell all of them. Learned to look for Marimekko on SL – thank you!

This is the second vtg 90s multi-neon Roffe/Demetre ski jacket that I’ve sold. Both were purchased at rummage sales for about $1-2. This one sold in a few months for $55. The previous one (more than a year ago), which was in slightly better condition and a longer style, sold for $69.

My one weakness while scavenging is buying clothing by obscure super high end brands and expecting to make big bucks. Often they are too obscure for anyone to be looking for them on ebay, or even if they are, they just don’t sell for that much. So I have to keep repeating to myself – Just b/c something sells for $1000 retail, doesn’t mean you will get more than $30 for it on ebay! Anyway, this time it turned out okay in the end. In a future post, I’ll share some that did not. (Okay, I have way more than one scavenger weakness, but let’s see if anybody got the TV show reference). Anyway…. Thakoon wool pants retail for $400-500. I purchased these for $8. Was hoping for $70. Sold for $42 after 7 months.

Huge shout out to Mr Schultz!

Went to an estate sale last week and was pretty much striking out. I strolled into the master closet and underneath the womens clothes were hundreds of very high end Maxell reel to reel tapes. The owner apparently didn’t have them for sale initially but I convinced the sellers to sell them to me since they were selling the reel to reel player. I bought all of them for $200 and pretty sure I can get at least $2500 maybe more.

That’s a great find, a little research and you’ll do well. Those are sought after and so easy to ship, if they have anything recorded on them they can go media mail.

I had a few fun sales last week! Here are some favorites …

Ken Griffey Jr. Pepsi Advertising Standee – Picked this at a yard sale for arbound $5 and sold for $100.

Starburst Clock – Paid $10 at an estate sale and sold for $125.

Forest Service Ration Bag – I got this for $1 at a rummage sale and took a best offer of $45. Forest Service stuff always sells, and I didn’t see anything else like this. Think I should have held out for more? It’s always hard when you need a sale!

Easy Rider Helmet – Paid $5 at a rummage sale and took a best offer of $75. I was hoping to sell this much higher, but I’ve had it for quite a while, so I happily accepted $75.

Homemade Ecto Goggles – Probably my favorite sale of the week, because I made them out of junk around the house for my son’s Halloween costume and sold them for $49.99! I just made them from various parts and pieces of flashlights, etc. I think I should go into business making them!

Had a few cool sales to share for this week.

I sold a hunting knife made by a mexican metal craftsman who made some of the swords for the Conan the Barbarian movies. Paid $16 at auction and took an offer for 92.50 on $124.95 asking price.

Sold a Mickey Mouse lamp for a dollhouse for an offer of $65 on a $99.95 asking price. Got this in a lot of dollhouse furniture for $11. Lamp actually lights up.

Picked up this gorgeous little ocean painting via an online auction recently and thought about keeping it myself I liked it so much. Paid $22. I have some nice sterling silver earrings up for sale, but what’s getting love are some plastic, possible Bakelite earrings that I finally got around to listing last week, from a large lot purchased in 2017. I filled my car twice with the amount of stuff I got from that estate sale auction (several closets full of stuff, and many things went to Goodwill), and so I’m cutting myself some slack for not having the littlest bits listed yet. @SilverFoxFinds – I had a large flat shipper from a department store that was used to ship graphics for use in store (they get them all the time). They are just two sheets of very sturdy cardboard. He came apart in the middle, and I think the package ended up being around 42″ tall. If it had been just a couple of inches bigger, it would have been $100+ to ship via USPS, but it ended up being only $11.83. Whew! The buyer said it arrived in great condition!

I mentioned in the fall that I ran an online auction for a friend. I accidentally gave a buyer a bag of XBox games when he had bought PC games. He never picked up his actual purchase, so I listed the PC games in four listings. The first to sell was a group of 12 for $55. This is much more than what the whole lot had sold in the online auction.

I bought a lot at an auction that included 5 vintage wood and metal barrels. I wasn’t sure if this was a great buy or not, although I paid hardly anything. This barrel was marked as being made in Japan and was probably used to transport nails or some kind of hardware. I paid about $0.50 and sold for $34.

In order to donate items to the Goodwill, you have to drive around the back. Sometimes they have furniture or other items for free that they don’t want to sell. I grabbed these two boxes of commercial tile in the fall last year. Each box was over 60 pounds, so I made it a local pickup. Sold for best offer of $50 to someone who was renovating a house.

This framed photo was purchased in an online auction for $1. Using the name of the photographer, I found that the park in the photo is located in Northport, NY. The buyer’s address was from that exact town. Sold for $28.

Everyone had really interesting sales this week!

I had these matchbooks I kept with my camping gear, left over from my Army days. (They came in military field rations.) It’s amazing that I’ve been carrying them around all these years, but also amazing to me that people pay money for them. This lot went for $22 plus shipping.

This GW University Bulletin from the ‘40’s was a quarter at a church sale. Pretty dry reading since it’s just a course catalog but it sold pretty quickly for $13 plus shipping. Maybe I underpriced it.

This anchor link chain necklace was in a baggie of jewelry that I bought at an estate sale for a couple bucks for the whole bag. Marked Italy 925 Sterling, the necklace went to Mexico for $48 plus shipping. Shipsaver now insures shipments to Mexico so I have taken it off my list of countries I don’t ship to. But Mexico prohibits imports of jewelry. If this had been sold through GSP, the folks in Kentucky doing the customs declaration based on the listing title and category would probably cancel the sale and send it back to me because they would know that. Since I instead ship internationally direct, I was able to describe the item on the customs declaration as a decorative chain and use a non-jewelry HS Tariff Number. It is a chain and it is decorative, right? I took a chance customs would disagree but I didn’t have much at risk. The buyer only had to pay $10.50 postage total, got it just fine, and was very happy.

This beat up, dried out Little Beaver zipper wallet was $7 at an outdoor flea market. It was a little more than I’d like to pay but there was no doubt I’d make money on it. It sold for $70 plus shipping to a Beverly Hills relative of the original creator of Red Ryder comics in which Little Beaver was a character.

My in-laws spent most of their working years abroad in Africa and the Middle East – including a long stint in Saudi Arabia – and they were collectors. Cleaning out their house after their passing a while back served as a great education to me in many kinds of obscure items from cultures we do not see much of in the US. So when I saw this in an indy thrift for a couple dollars I knew it was a Middle Eastern incense burner called a mabkhara. The applied emblems are the national crest of the United Arab Emirates up until 2008. One issue with Middle Eastern items in general is that the souqs there are full of “old” items made up for the tourist trade. Those souvenirs will sell but not for antique prices. This wasn’t intended to look old of course but it went for $35 plus shipping after about four months listed.

Your cat seems so playful! I hope to get a pet cat one day soon. I also had a somewhat slower week. Here are some interesting highlights…

Here’s a good example showing that it can pay off to make low risks when buying things in thrift stores. This is a rainbow light machine. It a simple contraption. It has a light bulb inside which shines on a prism and directs that light through a slit and projects onto a wall. I had no idea what it was or what it did when I bought it at a thrift shop for a dollar, but for that price it was an easy gamble. Turns out that there weren’t any others for sale, and actually very little information about it online. So I set a high price of $50 and it sold within a month.

At a rummage sale, I bought a bag of misc keys and keychains and doodads for $2. One of the items was this key that had engraved Mattel V-RROOM. Some research showed me that it was for a vintage toy hot-rodder motor. I figured something that specific would be important to somebody, so I listed it for $30 and took a BO of $20 after a couple weeks. I love little things like this. Easy to list, easy to store and easy to ship.

Here’s my big sale of the week. I acquired this Casio electric keyboard at a yard sale for $5. I was worried that it wouldn’t work but sure enough it played fine after putting in 5 ‘D’ size batteries. I listed it high with best offer and had a bunch of lowball offers start pouring in. But I held out and after about a month it sold for full price of $140.

I paid $1 for this old slotted wood board just because it looked cool. Even though the slots were not angled, I sold it as a suspect earring card holder. Prepared for a long tail, it actually sold fast Best Offer of $35 and shipped to Hawaii.

Here is my most interesting sale from last week. I bought this at Goodwill on 12/30/18 for $1.99 and listed it for $149.95 the same night. When I bought it it was framed under glass but it was in really bad shape. I removed it from the frame in order to list it. It sold a few days ago for full price even though I had BO enabled, as I always do. I have collected old photographs for years now and rarely ever try to sell them. I think I’m going to be listing a lot more from my collection now though after this one sold. Like I do with most things, I’m listing them high and letting them sit. I’ve listed a number more from my collection since this one sold. I love working with items like this!
