thanks guys for your replies, sorry for my delay in replying, had a crazy week at my day job.
Yeah I’m based overseas and I’m using a 3rd party shipping service (where we ride off someones corporate acct) but means we generate and print the labels ourselves and drop it off at the post office.
Before the latest ebay app update, I could take scan the tracking number barcode with my iphone and it would go straight into the system.
Now any codes that I scan, gets registered but when I look at the item, ‘it says tracking is not available’.
So I’m back to typing it in manually.
Anyway its been a slow ebay week for me too, so I’m currently more worried about poor sales rather than typing it manually. Funny how things turn out.
Thanks for raising this!
Ive been on the ebay helpline for the past 2 weeks now because of this and some other problem that I have with my store subscription.
I guess I’m not the only one with the problem.
So just a tip for everyone to just check your postings routinely to see if theres any $0.20 fee charged for new listings.Just reviving an old topic.. because I too am fascinated by the numbers of views and watchers on my products.. but i think Sigilini might be right, or at least for the wargaming stuff that I have been selling.
The items that sell often have a low number of views and watchers (usually 2-3?), whilst those with above 5 watchers are just stuck and not moving..
I think my take is that if I’ve 1 or 2 watchers for a relatively rare item, I should be ok. But if I’ve got 0 watchers, on a more ‘commodity item’ where there are alot more of the same item for sale on ebay, I might need to review my keywords or prices. I tend to ‘list and tend’ versus list and forget.
For a few products, I realised the difference between a sale was whether the name was spelt in singular or phural forms (for example: toy guards versus toy guard)
thanks everyone for your comments!
many good ideas!
1.) I completely forgot about the square function on the camera on the iphone! Just listed a few items using it and its a good idea.
Generally I try to practice not editing my photos much after taking the photo. Practicing to getting right the first time.
2.) Thanks for the tip on using classic ebay,I’ll give it a try. I definitely use my phone when picking orders, granted I dont have much items yet, but so far, its easier to do with the phone.
3.) I’ll give printing labels a try too.
thanks everyone!

unfortunately though for Terri, that didnt bring up any hits.
Hi all,
those are interesting ideas, yeah I sometimes forget if I meant to pack into a box or padded envelope when I was listing the item.
I use the custom labels / SKUs only after the items are sold.
I will type in either, ‘ON THE WAY’, “CANCELLED” for cancelled purchases, or ‘DELIVERED’. As being an international seller, delivery times are important, so twice a week, I spend 20 mins just checking the tracking numbers of the items I sold, to see if which items have been delivered, or are still on the way and more importantly if the item has arrived but the postman made a failed delivery, which I then send an email out to the buyer to ask if he’s received his purchase.
In that way I also close the ‘loop’ on my sales. Knowing that the item has been delivered.
Hi Jay! wow you guys are really early risers!
well I’m born and raised in Singapore, 38 years old now. I did spend a few years in Australia and in the UK for school.
What have I do sell on ebay? Back in ‘09,10 I used to buy dead stock of Japanese automotive parts from shops in Singapore and sell them on ebay.com.au or co.uk occasionally .com too to earn on the exchange rates. Currently today I’m mostly selling some new toys/collectibles things that interest me at the moment but I am trying to move away from the ‘commodities’ mould.
I attended my first ever ebay conference in Singapore last month, it was exciting! But alot of the big boys were into selling commodities. (Things that are $X retail, but discounted by Y%). Selling commodities is a terrible way to live, because there will always be someone who has a bigger discount rate, can operate cheaper and more efficiently. Living on single digit percentage profits is horrible!
So besides selling toys, I’ve been looking into setting up pipelines for myself, but its slow going as Im trying to only buy things that I’m interested in, instead of just buying something because I think it can sell on ebay if you know what I mean?
Lately I’ve found computer game tshirts, apparently lots of pre-orders for new PC & console games here come with free tshirts. Also I’ve been lookin into buttons from branded clothes, but its slow going as I’m still learning about what I’m finding.
As for thrifting, I’ve visited a few local goodwills but I dont think I’ve seen anything thats really sellable. or shipping. In fact I’ve been surfing facebook/local craigslists for items, and usually there will be sellers looking to sell urgently or have posted an advert so long ago, that they are just glad to get rid of the item.
As for the ebay market that I’ve been selling into, lately its been into the USA and CANADA, but thats primarily because of the toys that I’ve been selling. Why dont I sell in Singapore? Because Singapore’s so small, I’ve been trying not to sell the toys back into my sourcing ground.
What do folks from Singapore buy from ebay/ or the internet? Lately I’ve seen everything, as long as its shippable. Retail rentals in Singapore is ludicrously expensive and that affects the selling price on most things, so lots of folks have turned to buying on the internet.
For myself, I have bought tools, home and garden stuff, clothing (american brands, dickies, Eddie bauer, dc shoes, sketchers, Tom’s!), automotive parts, toys! and all sorts of other rubbish) from ebay.com, I’ve seen friends decorate their entire home with stuff bought purely from ebay.com
Besides the global shipping programme, our own post office offers a package consolidation service out of Portland, OR, so if some of you might have shipped to an funny serialised number in Portland, it might just be one of my packages getting consolidated!
phew thats quite a mouthful!
