The funny thing about that is I actually got that tip from a big laserdisc collectors group on FB to begin with. But I do understand the rationale. I’ve never shipped more than one or two at a time and always padded them well (I’ve even shipped educational disks via media mail without issue), but they definitely aren’t as sturdy as the mailers designed specifically for this use.
I’ve shipped several laserdiscs, and I’ve always used pizza boxes – not used one’s, of course. I go to the local Pizza Hut and ask to purchase some empty boxes. Often they’ll just give you some, or at most charge a couple of bucks for half a dozen.
Then I just assemble them inside out so they’re blank on the outside
I avoid cell phones on eBay (buying or selling) because there’s just too many things to go wrong and too much money involved. I belong a multiple “garage sale” groups on Facebook, and cell phone sales easily cause the most drama.
I do sell certain vintage electronics on eBay. There are things I find cheap at flea markets and garage sales that are very lucrative to flip. I love that kind of stuff because the stakes are low, the market is strong, and buyers have lower expectations.
I’ve seen people do it and make some money, but only under very specific circumstances.
For instance, there are various pop culture collectibles where the name of the item is often misspelled. I’ve seen it happen with some anime characters, certain brand names that don’t exist anymore, etc.
You can do eBay searches of some of those common misspellings and occasionally find auctions with no bidders that you could win for very little and likely flip for many times what you spent. It’s just not something you could do consistently, and you’d have to be really familiar with the particular collectors market.
