WBird, I have a feeling the pricing is at the managers discretion at a lot of the chain stores. The St Vincent De Paul near me must have a very greedy manager, there is another one that is a bit more of a drive and their prices are not quite as bad but still too high for resale. I’m not 100% sure what drives the high prices I see in my area and it only gets worse the further south you go on the west coast of Florida. My guess is that retirees really like to go to thrift stores, I see whole groups of them frequently and I think thrifting is entertainment for them the way teenagers used to always go to the mall. There is such an abundance of thrift stores and the prices are often so high that I can only assume they are subsisting off all the retirees.
There was some sort of blog post, social media event or fake sale that temporarily sent the asking price on this item through the roof about 6 months ago. I actually sold one for a whole $6 prior to the spike and was glad to be rid of it but soon after asking prices of $1,000 were showing up and some were even selling for 100’s of dollars. I’ve seen remnants of that short lived bubble still listed and that eBay Valet item is probably one of them.
I started an application on the website back in December but never finished it once I saw the cost vs my private plan and they have been sending me emails almost every day about the deadline so there is still some communication about it going on.
I think the whole part about needing extra cab money is probably what spooked them. I know if I had a buyer tell me they needed “extra” compensation above the cost of the return shipping label in order to send something back I’d be very suspicious. Even though you were being honest they had no way to know that and it does come off as a bit of an odd request. I know I’ve gotten pretty heavy handed with the blocking at times too. I had a seller a few weeks ago ask me the same question 3 times in a row, I blocked them out of fear they would be major trouble if they actually bought the item. I later got an angry message because they did try to buy the item and obviously couldn’t. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, there are plenty of other sellers out there.

Buyer purchased a pair of Nike shoes for $60 on Jan 15th. Never contacted me about any issues and then initiated a charge back through their credit card saying they did not authorize the payment. I called PayPal and they said that since I had tracking information showing the item being delivered to the address on the PayPal account that all was good. They had me respond to the case on the PayPal website then released the funds so they were no longer being held. Now I’m just waiting to see if the buyer tries to appeal the case.
My little trash experiment for the Something From Nothing Challenge sure has me curious what else my neighbors throw away. Already sold 3 of the items on Facebook and there is nothing like the thrill of having somebody else pay you cash for something that you grabbed out of the trash for free a few days earlier.
I’ve got a vintage melamine set of camping dinner ware that I thought somebody would be dying to buy and put in their retro camper. Almost 2 years and tons of price drops it has over 1,200 views and never even so much as an offer. I honestly don’t know why some items get so many lookers but I’ve never been able to equate the number of views with how quickly an item sells.
Yeah, the one I bought sure seems well made. I like your suggestion about the tapes Zach. I ordered one already but the seller seems to be sitting on my order and I’ve already sent him a follow up message asking him to ship it so I have a feeling I’m going to have to call eBay and get it canceled. Some of the Beta tapes seem to go for a decent amount too. I kept looking for a movie I might actually enjoy watching and those always seemed to be in the $12-$20 🙁
I find it interesting that you can detect a condescending tone in some of the things the journalist says. That guy definitely has been reselling records a long time but you can tell the journalist views his long-time business as some sort of demeaning uphill battle that can’t be won. Maybe reselling is different in the U.K. but I view a successful eBay business here in the U.S. as liberation from the “demeaning uphill battle that can’t be won” that is most corporate jobs.
Wow, I guess I need to stalk my buyers a bit more. I’ve sold some vintage Nintendo stuff to a prop house in Atlanta and a vintage German picnic set to another prop house in New Jersey, never really looked them up to see what they were all about but the address said “props dept” so I knew it was some sort of prop house.
01/19/2017 at 9:44 am in reply to: Join me in the 2017 Something from Nothing Challenge anyone??? #10698Wow, great finds! What type of toy was it? $15 is really good especially for a toy from the trash. I ended up picking up larger items and have sold a broken bike and a wooden coat hanger/shelf. This challenge has very quickly reminded me why I hate selling on Facebook and Craigslist. So many people asking questions then never getting back to me and arrangements to meetup that get canceled at the last second. I give major props to anybody who sells full time on those platforms, I’d go nuts.
I didn’t get the video out yesterday but will hopefully find some time to edit it today. We are in the process of getting our house ready to sell and I spent all day cleaning and meeting with a realtor.
Yeah, he later wrote me a novel about how he has so many stupid customers and they buy betamax tapes and then open item not as described cases against him because they thought they were VHS tapes or DVDs. I get where the guy is coming from, I guess I just would have a little friendlier tone if I was sending out some sort of notice to every customer that buys a particular type of item from me. Since he seems to want to play the high volume low margin game he probably is super busy and not the happiest person in the world 🙂
01/18/2017 at 10:10 pm in reply to: Add an "Immediate Pay" Condition to Accepting Best Offers #10674I’ve often tried to understand the logic behind why eBay does NOT require the payment to be processed once the seller accepts an offer. All eBay would have to do is include some terms that state sending an offer means committing to having that amount charged to your account when/if the seller accepts the offer. I only use make an offer on $100+ items any more because I got tired of non-paying buyers basically using this loophole as a type of short term layaway. The whole “I’ll pay you on Friday” stuff gets old fast. This is also why I don’t like to do auctions for any reason.
It appears mr Beta tape seller is quite a grump to boot. I got a very sternly worded message this morning informing me that I just purchased a Beta tape and that I must respond to the message acknowledging I know what I’m buying before he will ship the item. I told him thanks for insulting my intelligence, please cancel my order.
01/17/2017 at 7:31 pm in reply to: Any recent issues with buyers using you as a drop shipper? #10569I get buyers once in a while that send me a message right after buying something insisting that I don’t include an invoice. I’ve often wondered if they were doing some sort of resale/drop ship scheme but like Jay pointed out I figure I’m only really beholding to the person who actually made the purchase on eBay.
