Absolutely! I try to limit myself to an hour a day or less playing games as it’s easy to get carried away, so it’s mostly my kids and friends that enjoy my spoils these days and I’m not really into collecting sealed games or anything anymore, so all of my collection is pretty much accessible as it waits to be listed :). I have found it very good to to buy on Mercari, Amazon and other places to source for inventory for eBay (which tends to have higher sales prices, but also higher fees over all).
@annaesthetic23 I’d love to hear more about your book you’re writing! Funny story: I wrote a lengthy book (50+ pages) back in the day about how to sell on Listia and then right as I was getting ready to release it, they completely changed their system haha. Go figure. I’m thinking I probably could adapt a lot of that book toward eBay strategies and make it a fun read, but it’d take some serious editing. Maybe some day!

Hi Jay, thanks for responding :). Yes! Video games are endlessly rewarding to me as someone who enjoys playing, collecting and selling them. There’s just so many to choose from with new ones coming out practically every week, and decades of past ones to find/sell as well. Over the years I’ve amassed a collection worth literally tens of thousands of dollars, and most of it was just purchased on eBay directly and sold back on eBay. It’s kind of crazy and reminds me a little bit of that one seller you interviewed a while back who bought coins online only to resell back in the same market.
The biggest problem with selling games is that you generally need to purchase in lots and part them out, which takes a lot of time and effort, but as long as it’s something you love doing. As a game enthusiast, animator and artist I enjoy the challenge and the money is there, but it becomes a time sink if you’re unorganized. Juggling family obligations, a full time job and two energetic kids makes it an effort and a half, which is why it’s been mostly a hobby for me over the years, but the more I do it, the more I realize I could potentially make it a full time job in the future if I wanted to. Time will tell :).
It’s so funny you mention this. I had an Apple stainless keyboard that looked gorgeous but was fried in a basement leak we had and was completely worthless…at least, so I thought. I had the crazy idea to list it as a “for replacement parts / movie prop” and sure enough only a few weeks later it was shipping to Hollywood, CA. I looked up the buyer and sure enough, he was a known prop designer for a major movie studio. Talk about funny :).
I hope to see some of my defunct hardware items in a movie some day haha.
Happy Birthday Jay! I really enjoyed this episode and spent nearly the entire podcast duration while in my local supermarket. It’s quite therapeutic! I have been selling on eBay FOREVER but only just recently started doing it seriously so I look forward to posting some promising numbers for you in the near future :). I like the idea of local auctions and can’t wait to try them out once I unload some of my death piles and never-ending storage of past inventory. Keep up the amazing work with all you do.
