I’m late to the party and have barely posted to the forum. Anyway, I just listened to the podcast episode where this was discussed, so here I am.
I’m no expert and am generally leery of anyone who calls themselves one, like the fella who put an insurance estimate of 10k on the missing print from the suite. Seems nuts to me. There’s enough available auction result data on sites that don’t require paid membership to know that doesn’t seem right. Hausfrau’s numbers seem a lot closer to me.
I wouldn’t be hesitant at all to sell prints that fall in this price range at all on eBay. It isn’t really much as far as art goes. I know of an eBay seller in California who grosses well over a million a year in vintage art sales. I’ve sold several prints for $3k or more. Sure, I get a little nervous everytime, but haven’t had any issues. I just describe well, pack carefully and insure. My hunch is most big time auction houses wouldn’t be too interested in these prints, but you can always try.
And just a note on Dali prints – they’re always a safe bet if one pays what you paid for them. Even if they’re bogus, there’s still some decorative value there. If it’s cheap, just buy it and do some research. I see many pop up in auctions though and I just ignore them. There are so many schemes, scams and frauds in the world of Dali prints that one would have to be aware of all the red flags to make a smart buy.

Sorry about the ARC. Maybe I get all the good stuff =). Since I live a mile down the road, I can easily pop in and have had pretty good luck. On the other side, I haven’t had a lot of luck in Broomfield, likely because I’m not able to hit those as often.
I’ve had some great luck at the Mile High near me. Just picked up a watercolor there last week that I should be able to make a grand on! Good day! I have about another 20 years before the senior discount kicks in, but I’ve considered offering a ride to my thrift-loving senior neighbor as a ringer to get in on that action. Boy the line there gets a little crazy sometimes though.
Q1: I suppose it might depend on the things you’re looking for to some extent. I like to look for art and one thrift chain around here cleans out and restocks on a certain day, so I try to hit it then. Otherwise, I’ve found the thrift stores around Denver just constantly seem to restock. Sales are a nice surprise, but I’ve found that good stuff around here disappears quickly sale or not. I usually avoid Senior Days because I can’t deal with the crowds and there are a lot of seniors around here with antique mall booths. In the end, I think it’s probably just a numbers game. I probably find the best stuff at the two thrift shops within 2 miles of my house because I’m there most frequently.
Q2: Just from my own personal experience, I’ve found thrift shops in newer higher end neighborhoods to be void of any soul and unusual finds. Older higher end neighborhoods can turn up some treasures though. My best art, antique and vintage finds come from well-established middle class neighborhoods.
@Jay My wife actually works in education, so it’s mostly just me scavenging, listing and shipping. She loves thrifting too though and is slowly developing an eye for things she previously would have dismissed (and giving me weird looks when I pick up weird stuff less frequently too).
The transition has been pretty difficult. We lived in a tiny apartment for a while while we were house shopping, so that was limiting. Once we found a reasonably-priced house in the area, we had to get used to paying a mortgage that was twice that in Florida, smaller and about 60 years older.
Personally, it’s been difficult for me to move from a job where tasks are assigned to figuring it all out myself. I always had a certain amount of freedom in previous sales and marketing jobs, but there was still a framework and processes to keep everything moving. Needless to say, my respect for my previous employers has grown.
