@julie-b I love reselling content. Care to share the IG handles of the dumpster divers in NYC?
Thanks,
Carolyn
@icequeen – that sounds awesome. We love to stop and look through promising stuff on the side of the road. I just sold a framed large vintage print fro $25 on FBM that we picked up from someone’s driveway last year.
Wait – @antique-frog I did not read your post right. So they were racing dumpsters? (I forgot that skip is the British(?) word for dumpster). that is insane. I agree, I wouldn’t want to be trapped like that either.
Sales from the Dumpster:
- book $4.99 plus shipping
- book $4.99 free shipping
- set of two tall bar stools wooden $20
Jay – my husband is very supportive. He encourages me when I make a rookie mistake, tells me I am still learning, which I am. And he’s great for the heavy lifting.
Antique Frog – did you try to sell the outboard motors ever?
I sold one of the Guidepost books for $4.95 + shipping. Today I am going to work on listing the Beanie Babies, and will get the Cabbage Patch Kids listed for sure.
PS I got my bag of decaf coffee and it is delish! I love the packaging. Thanks!

05/17/2021 at 8:03 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 514: It’s Not About Ebay, It’s About Scavenging #88726I haven’t listened to episode 514 yet, but I am making progress on the download of all episodes. I’ve listened all the way through now up to the episodes where Ryanne and Jay start talking about Covid. Then I started with 513 and I am so thrilled your coffee shop is open!
I am so impressed, inspired and in awe of what you two have accomplished. Truly amazing. And to listen to it in a compressed amount of time, it really moves. It’s been like my own audiobook of your lives. I am so appreciative of the way you have shared it all.
As far as throwing away stuff from an auction, I am glad to hear you do that too, Doublythumbs. I got a bunch of chipped things and stuff I don’t care about in the last auction I participated in, and have been tossing them.
I have a question and I am pretty sure I know the answer but am being a bit OCD. I got a return request with an INAD on a piece of costume jewelry. I have free returns so the return request was accepted and the status is ‘waiting for buyer to ship item’. Now do I just wait for them to return it before sending a refund? Do I message them and tell them to mail it back with the label from Ebay or just wait? I feel bad because they are probably right, the beads are probably plastic and not glass so it was my mistake.
thanks,
Carolyn
Also, I heard someone talk about Google Photos and I wanted to put in my vote for that too. I create a draft either on my phone or on my laptop, and then I take photos using my Iphone. By using the camera app on the Iphone, I can adjust the exposure (my photos always seemed a tiny bit dark) and also alway use the square option. Then the Google Photos app will upload them and back them up and it’s really easy to pull in the photo using the Ebay app.
I have my camera settings to 1×1 for size and +3 for exposure.
These are the steps I use. It seems clunky when I write it down, but it’s not bad.
(Caveat: I’m a hobby seller, and that’s probably generous, lol.)
1. create the draft and save for later
2. take photo on iphone using the camera app
3. open draft on iphone and add photos
4. on Iphone save draft for later
5. on Desktop open draft
6. on Desktop finalize draft and list (or save for later)
I think my pictures look better doing it this way.
Hi – I’m listening through my backlog of podcasts and I had to tell you it was so cute to hear you Ryanne and Jay discussing the new-fangled ‘send offers to watchers’ page. This is such a part of Ebay now and I loved your excitement about it.
Also got a charge out of the episode (somewhere in the 380’s) where Jay talks about getting his coyote at the dump, because I think I just heard on an up to date podcast that you just sold it. Congrats on that, and I am so glad it got sent to a buyer who will appreciate it. I am always curious WHY people buy my stuff.
Thanks for making the download of podcasts available to us, I’ve gotten so many hours of knowledge and let’s face it, entertainment from them.
CarolynThat fabric is really pretty. Seems like upholstery or maybe for drapery.
I love Nic and Andrea ( the British couple from the video) and follow them religiously. After watching the follow up video posted today(?) the Ebay support person indicated that the issue with their store was caused by an auction of a rare video game that they had put up and people bid up on the listing super high, like $65,000 I think. So they had called Ebay while the auction was still going and Ebay told them it was fine to end the auction. But when they did, their account was suspended.
As far as other streams of income, Nic and Andrea also have an Etsy store (Andrea has one and now Nic has opened one). They are very active on YouTube and make some income that way.
Curious Curator, I met someone who scavenged and refinished furniture and did pretty well selling it on Facebook Marketplace. I still see her listings, and she asks for pretty good prices.
One thing that came out of the call to Nic and Andrea was that the Ebay rep said that only people who go against Ebay’s rules multiple times would actually lose their account.
Thanks Jay, it’s good to know I can ignore it without a ding on my account. I do the same, sometimes I accept. But I sometimes just want to ignore it. Will feel free to do so going forward. Thanks for all you do! I am listening to Episode 133 today. Love the podcasts!
I had listed a tin recipe box with recipe cards, put it as Priority Mail. A buyer messaged me asking if I could send it Media Mail. I researched and thought I could, so I edited the listed and changed the option to be only Media Mail. The buyer bought it and paid for Media Mail but when I went to ship it, Ebay would not let me print a Media Mail label. My best guess is that it did not like the ‘metal box’ part of the listing.
So I shipped it in a padded flat rate envelope and plan on absorbing the extra $2-4 or so. The buyer has said that she would like to reimburse me after she gets it.
thanks,
Carolyn
Hi Jay!
We live in Haverhill, we moved here after raising our kids in Methuen. Downsized to a condo after following Mr Money Mustache’s blog for a while.
I have had a couple of disgruntled customers, my knee jerk response it to refund in full immediately. One still gave me negative feedback, which I did not realize I could have asked Ebay to remove.
I try not to look back too much though, right?
It’s a pretty ring. For me, I would take the $100. That’s a really good profit and it’s way simpler and there will not be any customer issues. Good luck!
I love it! it definitely looks like cake or cheesecake or maybe I am hungry.
