This was a fun little sale because I remember these from my childhood. Paid .50 and thought it might go as a prop but it went to Ohio. http://www.ebay.com/itm/332176975514
Anyone recognize these of SL fame? I paid $1 each at a weird storage locker liquidator thrift store. No cups. http://www.ebay.com/itm/332124299823 People like the octogon pattern.
Sold two of these 1960s ties. Paid $2 each at a thrift. Only spotted them due to the crazy color. Shipped to a preppy retail storefront. http://www.ebay.com/itm/331881503395 http://www.ebay.com/itm/331881500259
International sales coming out of the woodwork this week. Mostly new items moving.
05/10/2017 at 9:20 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 309: Scrapping and Parting – Interview w/ Eric in Ottawa Canada #17697Good for you! Attack that backlog. I wish I could get used to just using the phone. I feel like I am slower than average at listing. I have a lot of unlisted left too. I’m nibbling at the shopping but my ratio of out vs. in is much, much improved and it is fun to rediscover picked items one category at a time.
Is anyone going to this? We are kicking the idea around since my husband wants to go to Vegas again, but I’m kinda over it. It would be fun to have a SL breakfast table meet up or something.

05/08/2017 at 2:50 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 309: Scrapping and Parting – Interview w/ Eric in Ottawa Canada #17613Hi Ryanne, it looks like my post is lost this week again after I edited. If you can recover it, great. I see it has a record of my posting in this forum but I don’t see the entry. Thanks!
Have a physical barrier while you set up. Dealers here will knock on doors hours early, come on to your property early while you set up, etc. On Craigslist, FB, and Next Door, we don’t put the house number on the ad just the street and cross street, or we add the house number the night before. We have used patio furniture across the driveway with a sign. I put something in the ad that I am serious about no EBs so they know not to waste their time. We start at 7:30 instead of 8 to get a jump on the others.
Have extra help and eyes for the opening 1.5 hours. I wear an apron so I don’t have to guard the cash box. Keep your jewelry near you up on a table. If you bag it up in clear bags it’s easier to count.
I think the best signage is simple arrows and “SALE” at all major intersections from the high traffic streets. People get to wordy with signs and you can’t read them when you are driving by.
We don’t have many sales as they are time intensive and don’t bring much cash unless you have furniture, but it’s great to get rid of things and I enjoy visiting with people. I agree with pricing things at least by category because I tend to go low when I don’t have time. Have fun!
Update: After I asked the initial rep to have a supervisor review, someone in GSP vla email responded that she opened the case, tried to contact Canada Post on behalf of the buyer but couldn’t due to confidentiality, so had let the buyer know to contact Canada Post. Then, I asked for a clarification on whether the buyer was to thereafter contact me or Ebay. Next thing I know they’ve review and refunded buyer 100% of domestic and international and closed the case. Stated case against me would not count against me. Happy with the result and the buyer was super cool, but it seemed like I lot of hoopla. I didn’t really get why they kept needing me to get involved since I obviously can’t do anything with Canada Post.
Yes, through KY and up in Canada stalled out. Called eBay and they told me to have the buyer start a case, etc. estimated deliver is two weeks past already. Thanks
05/03/2017 at 10:15 am in reply to: What Sells on eBay: Pochade paint box, trucker hats, Marantz receiver, JBL Speakers, reel tapes, Polaroid case #17419oops just noticed I’m not posting on this week’s thread.
Awesome sale. I was surprised at what these go for and in fine print on the back it said it was originally a Target item. Paid $4, sold $71 in about a month. Sold after posting on Pinterest party Facebook board to a 0 feedback buyer.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Waverly-Garden-Room-Fabric-Tablecloth-Ivory-Black-Wellington-Toile-60-x-84-/232295788362?rd=1These were framed and exposed to water but the art was very nicely done. I removed them from the ruined frames and they sold pretty quickly. I think I paid a buck each.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-2-Hand-Colored-Etching-Art-Prints-D-Kunic-Carousel-Fox-Panda-Nursery-Decor-/232284100237?rd=1Action fail, but made it through Christmas without selling and Ebay kept hounding me to drop the price because I entered the upc. Luckily I got this for $8 at the Indy thrift. Should have tried Facebook.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEGO-SET-70142-Legands-of-Chima-Eris-Fire-Eagle-Flyer-Lagravis-Strainor-Minifigs-/332186193621?rd=1Sold one Starbucks mug – from circa my birth as a scavenger for resale $1.99. Only like 60, 80? more to go. Sold quickly best offer $25
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Starbucks-Barcelona-Spain-Global-Icon-City-Collector-Series-Mug-Cup-2012-16-oz-/232306306447?rd=1In the past when I have a garage sale, I notice there are certain things I just want to get rid of, and other things I’m kind of into that I price higher. I think as I go through the piles, I need to price some things like these mugs to move.
Items In Store: 336
Items Sold: 9
Total Sales: $276
Avg Selling Price: $30
Highest Price sold: $72 (NIP Waverly toile tablecloth. Shhh..from Target)
Cost of Goods Sold: $34 new + $18 used
Money spent on new inventory: $32 (3 items)
New Listings: 6Lol. Yup, smiling at you guys with no kids. We went to the fair and swam, etc. and I barely got anything listed this week. I got accepted to more serious vintage Facebook group. They all have Instagram pages for their businesses and fancy logos. Their Pinterest boards have thousands of followers, so that’s cool. I’ve applied to be a contributor to a few of them.
It was an ok selling week. I got frustrated with Ebay telling me to discount my new legos and tried an auction experiment. Two bids and a small loss on that. I put free shipping on the other that that hasn’t sold. They pick on those with upcs.
Just a couple of thrift stops but need to turn it around this week with my buying/listing ratio. Plan to work on a box of textiles this week and maybe some art. Life has finally calmed down and I got some good health news, so I should buckle down before the summer camp schedule hits.
04/30/2017 at 1:19 pm in reply to: Top Rated Seller, Missing Scans for Multiple Items Shipped to One Buyer #17262Luckily I was still ok, but lesson learned. I don’t think many shoppers are used to the cart on Ebay, which is why I mention it in my listing description. They still often purchase separately and I have to do a partial refund of the shipping in Paypal.
04/26/2017 at 9:53 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 307: Getting Ready to Sell While Traveling #17127My post to this thread is not showing up. Recap: A good week for me selling all new items, including mostly RA bedding. I did well on the challenge listing 25 items! I also encouraged others to become patrons so we can at least cover the forum costs for R & J. Have a great week everyone.
Just joined this. Looks great. I also asked to join 3 of their Pinterest boards and I’m waiting for approval. How else do you participate Tara? Thanks.
I like this thread. Simple but I picked up a catch phrase on a fly by night southern junker show. One woman would always have the seller give the price first, then say “would you consider $__?”. I thought that was a nice, non-threatening catch phrase. I also like “$ works for me” or “whats your best price.” Our local flea market is chock full of antique dealer types, but there are a couple of clean out guys. On the former I use the sweet approach, on the latter I either bundle or be ready to walk.
04/17/2017 at 9:24 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 306: We Love Flea Markets and Craigslist #16700Total Items in Store: 341
Items Sold: 4
Cost of Items Sold: $21
Total Sales: $68
Highest Price Sold: $22 (used Pottery Barn Easter Bowl Set)
Average Price Sold: $17
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: +/- $30I did all of my ebay bookkeeping and our tax return this week, so no listing even though I had a day off work. I also fell off the challenge wagon too and went thrifting one day. I was very selective but need to flip the ratio back this week.
Doing the bookkeeping made me reflect on my past approach to things. I was disappointed with my profit overall and realize I had too little profit on some types of items, but I have a plan to raise my average sales price after the piles are cleared. I also feel like I’m too slow dime on the vintage items and want to move items faster since there is an abundance to source. Finally, I really want to expand to Etsy if life is less crazy than last year and no surprise medical issues. So, we’ll see. Need to get out of phase II first clearing the piles.
