Number of items listed this week: 8An ok week on Ebay. Limping along here selling of existing inventory. I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about Ebay’s future because after that public beat down of management, I sense they are doing a bit better with technology management and progressing toward a modern app. It doesn’t seem as disruptive as it used to be. This week is a bit dense with non-Ebay but the taxes are filed and the weekend might be good for listing.
With our high cost of living, I don’t really ever feel like I’m waltzing around with significant disposable income to worry about spending or investing. My husband has been socking away pre-tax money for retirement like a madman and that plus our housing, taxes, and other cost of living keep us keeping up. Probably some of the people who don’t have kids can afford to be a little bit loose. Why not treat yourself a bit I guess in that instance? If we do have “extra money” we will stay somewhere nice on an annual vacation or spend it on experiences together – good memories. I do feel like there has to be some kind of balance with the frugalness and living your life while you are relatively young. (Our moms passed away in their early 60s.) Most people need a little treat now and then to stay motivated at the grindstone. But fancy cars and collections of things don’t appeal to us.

Fortunately, my estimates were good and I paid it quarterly. It’s really difficult to not be bitter about it. Apparently there isn’t much sympathy because many people don’t get it’s hitting people living a middle class lifestyle in an expensive, high tax area. Some of our friends with a full time instead of part time second spouse like me actually didn’t get hit as hard because they had already been phased out of some deductions. We were right in the sweet spot. 🙁 On the other hand, some people have it worse because they are paying for kids in college to boot.
Lots going on still but I listed 8 items. Better than 0
I am running “Full version” 5.30.0.1518 IOS on an iphone 8
It’s not working well today. Some items are repeats from the last couple of days and it’s not bringing up any new ones after I make offers. I sold two vintage bread and butter $20-30 items at a small discount, one has been listed over a year.
I watch items I like but don’t want to pay the price, then I usually forget about them (more true on Ebay than Mercari). Often when I get an offer from a seller it’s still more than I want to pay so I don’t accept but it does bring the item back to my attention. I think it’s an awesome tool. You’re not entirely at the mercy of the algorithm this way.
No action yesterday but one offer did get accepted right away today with a little better discount, like 20 percent off. I was only able to send offers on about 7 items today for whatever reason. I think I read before that weekends, especially Sundays are a better time to try this.
Luckily my buyer will take another (more expensive one) as replacement. Bit of a loss and a late shipping ding for me but I’ll take it over calling Ebay. I imagine she’s a little lady who does needlepoint and won’t hit me with a negative.
I’ll let you know. FYI I didn’t take much off – just over the 5% on most things, like a couple of bucks on the typical item. In the past it has worked for me a couple of times, less than 10% of the time on Ebay. On Mercari I had more success with it, but you have to discount it more heavily and my prices there were originally lower.
Ugh, I just resold an item that sold in March. I don’t sell similar or end and relist. I loathe calling Ebay so will see if the buyer will take another similar item.
Congrats Simon! That’s exciting.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong with my big sale to an Asian country middleman place. Most of those I’ve had go well but I did have some scammy one and for some reason I have a bad feeling about this transaction. The rest of the week was pretty poor once again. Had kind of a threatening email too on a cracked item mentioning feedback, but after I refunded got “rock solid seller” feedback. Before I could block they bought a similar item in my store. I packed the crap out of it and hope it gets delivered safely tomorrow!
Finished my bookkeeping, taxes, but will continue to be distracted by preparing to renovate my dad’s new condo. Luckily most of that action will be in summer when Ebay sales are already slower usually.
I hear that there is a lot of tv chatter about a recession despite fairly good economic measurements and again, we are in the minority paying a lot more in taxes this year under the new law, so I’m pleased some of you scavengers are still having pretty good numbers despite all of that.
Hi, good luck Lacy with your sale. Zero for me, but I did finish our taxes and my Ebay bookkeeping for 2018, plus have EZ auction tracker updated for 2019. Also got a lot of non-Ebay stuff done.
Thanks again! Just met out there today. It’s a bit daunting realizing all the little things that can add up, but I’m going to get some help with estimates soon. I like all of the faucets you mentioned and showed.
Hi and thanks. We are basically worthless when it comes to labor and will be hiring it all out plus we are pretty busy with work and the kids. I’ve found in the past that there is a lot of variance in bids locally because some people will and can pay the crazy price. So, multiple bids is pretty key. Finding the old time locals is usually cheaper because they have a cheaper cost of living to cover for themselves. Our local lumber store or tile stores kind of know who the good guys are and will give referrals, plus the realtor.
I have expensive taste and go all in on my own house, but this is an older (1960s) senior living complex so I don’t want to overdo it. We do want to make it through enough reno that no problems crop up while there are people in it.
Thanks for the Lowes tips. My dad was a doctor in the army during Vietnam and just got his licensed updated. He gets 10% off at a lot of places, including home improvement but won’t be with me when I buy some things as he is still out of town.
Do you buy most of your fixtures online Jay or get chain store stuff?
27 for me. Have a nice week ladies.

Number of items listed this week: 13 Ebay, 14 MercariWell this week I tried to revive my little store with some CPR – ran a sale, started a few cheap auctions on old low dollar items, listed over a couple of days. Did not really seem to help the weekend sales (had none).
I listed on both Ebay and Mercari, though I’m concerned about Mercari going on life support with the cuts, Google drop, and shipping increases they had to make this year. A shame because I hate the new zoom thing on the Ebay app – had to crop out my toes or get to close. I really wish it even close to as fast and easy to list on the Ebay app as it is on the Mercari app. For example, I type a few words into the title and the app brings up buttons to tap on with the brand, category, and other items specifics so far less clicking and typing required. I did scan a book my dad gave me to sell on the Ebay app, so that was pretty cool but still had to clean up on the desktop, especially the promoted listings entry because I believe you have to agree to trending rates (no thank you!).
I don’t really have time to watch items so forget it but I’m over my 250 and not break even for the next level, so every now and then I’m culling a few losers that are under $10. More often I’m making price cuts. I never stop listing though at 250. Make an offer to buyers seemed to disappear for me and it’s not working as well lately on Mercari.
Have a good week!
