I had an okay week. I got another ‘free’ 500 listings from eBay that expired yesterday, so I was a little more motivated to list.
Listings: 40 between eBay and Poshmark, some cross posted
Poshmark sales: $10 fairy furniture (free scavenge) and $15 Under Armor hoodie (listed Saturday, bought week prior for $3)
Ebay: $22 and $29 autographed books (part of the $1 carful of books)
My goal was 4 sales or $100, so I’m glad I met my goals!
Approx 165 listings each in Poshmark and eBay.Other notable occurrences were a low, low offer on a print cartridge. I’m going to give it another month before accepting less than $100, based on comps.
And last night I thought I had a jeans sale on Poshmark, but there was a problem with payment. It’s a bummer, but I’m glad I don’t have to tell people their card was declined.
Poshmark has promos for dropping prices (like lowering shipping costs), so I have a mental list of items that I am going to reduce once that rolls around. I really want to get some of this inventory moving. No shopping, although the thrift store has 50% off this Saturday, and my kid needs new pants.
I did scavenge in our trash. My husband was throwing out some fishing supplies, and I grabbed a couple of things. (Shhh!) I’m going to look up comps. It’s probably trash, but maybe there is a treasure.
I just countered an offer, answering their questions and restating that (expensive) shipping is included. We’ll see how it goes. It’s an item that’s just been up a week, so I’m not too bothered to wait for a sale.
I’m pretty ignorant on fashion as well! However, brand names are a big deal in women’s fashion. The first thing I would check is if there is a brand name. Check on the inside. The straps look leather from the picture, are they rough (suede-y) on the bottom side.
When selling, you’ll want to include photos of any labels, and describe and photograph the inside of the purse, along with providing measurements.
SLOOOOWWW WEEK for sales, but I sourced like a maniac. Like a maniac that needs to stop sourcing.
Items Sold: 3!
Cost of Items Sold: $1
Total Sales: $42.50
Sold a garden fairy furniture set ($10, was a freebie), sold a box of books to Half-Price Books for $3.50, and an autographed Bill Clinton book for $29 (ebay)
Money Spent on New Inventory: $ 125 more/less at garage sale and auction
Listed 26 items and started on MecariSourcing: I picked up some clothing items for myself and my Poshmark store at a garage sale. Slowly listing those.
But bigger sourcing was about $100+ on a local online auction of a pawn shop going out of business. Prices don’t include tax and 15% fee.
The biggest money was about $42 for two lots of silverware, that I hope I can part out like @Ryanne.
$1 lot of “art” that included a velvet, wood-framed painting of a ocean boat (like a pirate ship)
$1 lot of books labeled “Assorted Books, Collectors Guides, Presidential” I saw some jewelry/gem ID books, and that’s what I wanted. I pulled up and there were 5 LARGE BOXES. Oh, #@$*, I thought. My car was BULGING. Well, it turns out that there are a lot of old (50-100 year old) books and autographed political books: McCain, Clinton, Pat Buchanan. Even a copy of Moon Shot autographed by astronaut Alan Shepard. I’m making my way through these books, but I have a feeling I’m going to be happy I filled my car with these books. I’m of the mindset to move them fast, though.
I took one box of books to Half-Price Books and got all of $3.50, but I’m not interested in anything listing under $10 that takes up more than a file folder worth of space.
$1 for two OLD bibles. Still not able to date them. They are about 4 times as big as I thought.
$4 for a Super 8 projector and Varo viewer (if it works, $$$)
$7 lot that I think is just junk now that I am checking comps and condition.
$21 cameras and lenses lot. I may have purchased my next camera, if the Canon txi Rebel is in working order.
$6 for 2 printer cartridges and 2 weather radio and added junk. One weather radio is for me. I’ve listed on of the printer cartridge (the unopened box) for $100+. We shall see!Regarding Efficiency Punks: I love that term, sound better than “being lazy.” I guess it all depends on what you consider inputs, too. Time is an important one for me, and I’ve started to think about how to get better at using my time on a long-term and short-term basis. I really want to increase turnover in my items, so I’ve started doing a few promoted listing. No results from that yet.
I also appreciated the specific discussion of the silverware in this week’s podcast. I’m presuming I should get those items posted before long, as people will be preparing for Thanksgiving and the holidays. But I’ve got to get these books moving.
09/12/2019 at 3:07 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 426: Our Financial Lives Are Tied To The Mysterious Whims Of A Website #67724Did I just say that I didn’t source and sell books? Well, that changed with my auction pick-up yesterday. I’ll post my “what sold” in the current podcast thread tomorrow.
I’m following along the conversation about death piles (or money piles). Hope you don’t mind me butting in.
I’ve not been as productive as I’ve wanted, but it’s improving. It needs to improve more quickly since I have a carload of inventory from an online auction to pick up today. I’ve listed about 10 items in the last 24 hours. But, that still seems like a snails pace.
Seems like I’m having a hard time focusing on what is the top priority to list:
– High dollar items that may take a while to sell
– Low dollar items that may sell more quickly
– Things that I spend more money on and should try to get a return on
Right now I’m trying to get clothes onto Poshmark and anything that might be of interest for the holidays on eBay.One of my successes has been going through a portion of my inventory more critically. I’ve made two small trips to the thrift store with things that just aren’t going to be worth listing. Most of my inventory has come from lots, so there is a lot of fun research that I get lost in before listing.
09/07/2019 at 12:00 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 426: Our Financial Lives Are Tied To The Mysterious Whims Of A Website #67508I agree, I’m probably going to want to sign up for an actual store. I started looking at the help pages on that, and was glad to see there are different levels. I don’t know that they did it that way when I started with eBay long, long ago. But I’m also in a stage of testing myself, seeing that I can keep up and keep listing on a consistent basis.
As far as books, I’m mostly listing things I’m casting off. I don’t think it would make sense to source books (other than freebies). Most of mine are gardening/homesteading, school texts from my public administration classes, crafts, and a few super old books. Right now I have a 1930s real estate book and 1906 copy of Call of the Wild up for sale. I wouldn’t mess with popular fiction or nonfiction. I did quite a few used book sales on half.com and Amazon. If it’s not above $10, I’m not going to bother. I’m finding that when I check comps, about half the things I planned to list are not worth listing.09/07/2019 at 9:47 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 426: Our Financial Lives Are Tied To The Mysterious Whims Of A Website #67500My sales for 8/31-9/6
Total Items In Store: 100+ (Poshmark/Ebay)
Items Sold: 6
Cost of Items Sold:I $2.50 sourcing / $14 items family doesn’t use but bought (Could consider that $0)
Total Sales: $122
Highest Price Sold: $40 for graphic used Girl Scout t-shirt; purchased as part of an auctioned Girl Scout lot ($3 for several items)I experimented with Free Shipping on my EBay items. I don’t know if it helped, but it let me list items faster. So all Ebay sales this week include shipping.
Poshmark: Lucky Jeans $10
Ebay: Mini purse $36; Talbots dress $20; lia Sophia Xmas pin $15; Girl Scout T $40
* I tried the crosslisting service List Perfectly last weekend. It did result in three sales, but I found it, personally, not much faster than manually crosslisting.
* I need to proofread my listings on a regular basis. Found some dumb typos.
* I am feeling really overwhelmed with the amount of stuff I have to list, but I am trying to just keep listing. I took Monday off after getting over 50 listing up on EBay. I don’t have a “store” on Ebay and I have a 100 free listing credit that expires Monday. I’ll see how much I can get to.
* I’m trying to get a bunch of books posted. I don’t know how lucrative that is, but I like the simple shipping.Total Items In Store: 113 (Poshmark/Ebay)
Items Sold: 4
Cost of Items Sold: $1
Total Sales: $59
Highest Price Sold: $20 for used Baldwin jeans; purchased for $1 at neighborhood garage sale
My other items were a scavenged maternity sweater and a fairy furniture set from the garage sales, and a Fantasia DVD.
Victory: Some of the stuff I found for FREE on the CURB is selling.
Defeat: The Miss Me jeans I was going to list have a broken zipper and a significant stain. That would explain why they were on the $1 rack (and bought for 25 cents). This week I am focused on:
– Listing some vintage Girl Scout girl/leader uniforms
– Cross-listing from Poshmark to EbayI’m sitting on a bunch of school uniforms, so I am going to try to send out some offers on those. I also need to figure out what of my death pile is next after these uniforms.

@Jay, I AM listing on Poshmark. That’s my best defense, LOL. I’ve started back on Ebay, I’ve just got to get moving on it.
@So Cal Joe, thank you. I should probably focus on the small items (under 1 LB items) to build up some success. And I was glad to see there is a whole section on shipping.
Jay, I’ve sold on Ebay as very small supplemental income, mostly books and craft supplies, and then weird vintage items.
I think my mental block with shipping is that I have made mistakes in estimating shipping costs (not particularly expensive ones, but still they are mistakes). I tend to beat myself up over it, and wonder if it’s worth it. Since posting, I’ve been thinking that I should really just focus a could of hours on reading and watching YouTube videos about shipping, and get up to speed. My apprehension about shipping is why I’ve gravitated to Poshmark most recently – it’s a flat amount.
I have SO much inventory to post, and just came home with another auction haul. I guess it’s time to get serious about it.
08/19/2019 at 12:25 pm in reply to: Am I the only one who still takes an enormous amount of time to edit photos? #66565Are there things about your photo setup that make retouching/editing necessary? Could you mitigate some of that?
For me, I find my iPhone 6 and iPhone 10 both take acceptable photos with natural light on a neutral background. I will often increase the Brightness, Saturation and/or Contrast on most photos in the photo app on the phone. I don’t usually use any other app for images. It doesn’t take long when you are in the groove of correcting photos for 5-10 items.
I’m agreeing that your first photo should be the best. I will add that if you are crossposting automatically to Pinterest from Poshmark (where my focus is), it will probably take the first three photos for the image.I sold two items on Poshmark last week.
Living Proof Shampoo and Conditioner. Retail $50, sold for $20. Bought in a big health and beauty lot. I’m trying to see what else is saleable from that lot, which I bought mainly for personal use.

Nike Dri-Fit shorts, $10. Purchased at thrift and worn by my daughter.
