It’s also interesting to note that you have to source the high dollar items. I find as much as I can at estate sales, flea markets, etc… but how much there is really super high dollar? The wwolst12 seller I believe you said is selling mainly consignment now. Yes, they built their reputation, but now have people bringing the items to them, therefore no longer needing to source as much. That’s a huge piece of the equation that is solved for them specifically.
Interesting convo as I’m finishing up the podcast on % of your store that is high dollar. You’re absolutely right, you can’t sell something for $1000 if you don’t have something listed for $1000.
I just did a quick analysis of my store (currently 898 items):
– 559 listings under $30 (62%)
– 276 listings $30-$100 (31%)
– 62 listings over $100 (7%)And then an analysis of my sales over the past 90 days (257 sales):
– 159 sales under $30 (62%)
– 84 sales $30-$100 (33%)
– 14 sales over $100 (5%)Pretty astounding how close they mirror each other. So, presumably, if I get more $100+ inventory, I would also sell more $100+ items. But can a store survive with only that inventory? I would think not because the volume would be lower.
Week November 19-25, 2017
Total Items in Store: 898
Items Sold: 27 (1 Amazon)
Cost of Items Sold: $167 (16.9% of sales)
Total Sales: $984.82
Highest Price Sold: $200 (1962 Barbie with Tweed Suit)
Average Price Sold: $36.47
Returns: 1
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $30
Number of items listed this week: 4
Promoted listings test: 16 sales, $745.86 (75.7% of total sales), $37.80 fees (5.1% of sales)Another good week, definitely above average for me. I do love this time of year as the non-registered buyers start coming through more often, they rarely try to haggle on price and just Buy It Now. As I’ve noted over the past few weeks the percentages of sales that are coming through Promoted Listings is incredibly high now. My hypothesis is that the surge of shoppers that aren’t familiar with eBay may be navigating/clicking on the promoted links, while seasoned eBayers are looking for the best price/nearest location of items.
Not too much listing/sourcing activity this week during the holiday. My wife & I hosted my parents, her parents, and her sister. It was a nice Thanksgiving and then on Friday we took my parents to the World Trade Center grounds – the new park and pools first and then up to the top of One World Trade – as they hadn’t been since it was still a pile of rubble 10 years ago. Incredible views at dusk!

Week November 12-18, 2017
Total Items in Store: 917
Items Sold: 32 (3 Amazon)
Cost of Items Sold: $270 (20.7% of sales)
Total Sales: $1,301.93
Highest Price Sold: $237.59 (1962 Barbie) & $150 (48 Star Bulldog Bunting Flag)
Average Price Sold: $40.69
Returns: 1
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 0
Promoted listings test: 20 sales, $910 (69.9% of total sales), $51.34 fees (5.6% of sales)Tremendous week for me! Close to all time highs in volume & gross sales. That $40+ average sold is super nice too. Two big sales in the Barbie & the flag above, but also was selling $50 items left & right as well (11 total $50+ items sold). Also sold 6 items today to kick the week off really nice. One thing I’ve noticed is that I’m selling a lot more through promoted listings recently… since I started promoted listings back in January, a typical week would be 20%-35% of my sales, but for the past several weeks it has been 50%+. Not complaining, but interesting… perhaps with more users (including several unregistered users) around the holidays, the promoted listings are beneficial?
No listing this weekend as we are preparing to host Thanksgiving for my parents, my wife’s parents, and her sister. Grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry, and all the rest in preparation. I’m off work on Wednesday, so I might try to get a few things up and listed before the family chaos starts. 🙂

11/14/2017 at 9:45 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 334: The Holidays Are Just Another Day #25584Thanks for the link! I’ll contact them, although I contacted a few other online retailers/auction houses and I didn’t meet their minimum requirements (like I didn’t have at least a case).
11/13/2017 at 11:26 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 334: The Holidays Are Just Another Day #25573@ LuckySparrow in NE – fantastic wine/liquor scavenging story! You noted that you were trying to sell some of the scotch & other liquor… where are you going to try to sell? I found some 1976 bottles of Pol Roget champagne at an estate sale and haven’t been able to sell. Approached some liquor stores/distributors that also buy & collect and they had major (legitimate) concerns about how good it would be. And selling online isn’t an option because (at least in my state) it’s illegal.
Week November 5-11, 2017

Items Sold: 18
Cost of Items Sold: $116 (14.6% of sales)
Total Sales: $793.28
Highest Price Sold: $215 (c1962 Barbie with Bubble Cut Hair)
Average Price Sold: $44.07

Number of items listed this week: 42
Promoted listings test: 14 sales, $614.94 (77.5% of total sales), $32.86 fees (5.3% of sales)Nice little week highlighted by a few high dollar sales. Volume has been down for the past two weeks, but average sale price has remained high. Also sold 10x items for over $300 yesterday, so hoping for a big week – although last time I had a huge Sunday the second half of the week was dead.
Listings this week were above average as I was moving through records pretty quickly.
11/06/2017 at 7:53 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 333: The Illusion of Keeping Up With Everything #25178Ugh, thanks so much for the links. So it looks like the locks aren’t even old… I was thinking maybe they were real antique locks, which would still hold a value. Guess I have some editing to do – might even just take them down to prevent any nasty grams from eBay.
11/06/2017 at 12:35 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 333: The Illusion of Keeping Up With Everything #25128I was going to ask the same thing! I absolutely don’t want fakes in my store, so I’m interested to see what the watch outs would be. They are incredibly solid locks, seemingly made of cast iron, very rusty (too rusty?). The name plates are the only things that appear to have been cleaned.
11/06/2017 at 11:18 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 333: The Illusion of Keeping Up With Everything #25108Got back from New Orleans late last week, so catching up on the last two shows and also posting for my 2 weeks. Had extended handling time (5 days), so sales for Oct 29-Nov 2 were a bit slow but this past weekend picked up a bit.

Promoted listings test: 16 sales, $496.97 (57.7% of total sales), $25.57 fees (5.1% of sales)Felt good this weekend to be back at it. Went to an auction and got some things that I think are pretty cool (although I paid up a decent amount for them): 1964 Beatles Pins, 1964 Beatles keychain, 1960s Beatles cake toppers, Triumph Motorcycle cast iron sign, an ashtray from the old MGM studios, and a bunch of old rusty antique padlocks from Folsom Prison, Yuma Prison, NY Insane Asylum, Leavenworth Federal Prison, and Alcatraz Death Row.
10/24/2017 at 5:22 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 331: List and Forget, The Buy And Hold Strategy Of Ebay #24383I think you’re making a good move with PayPal Capital. I took a working loan out via PC in January this year to help 1) pay down some debt quickly and 2) make a couple of big moves on inventory. It paid off incredibly quickly for me too. I also paid back at the higher 30% rate in half the time – I was selling higher volume & at higher prices (with the premium inventory I was able to acquire) so it all worked out. I’m on pace to have my best year ever (of the 4 years I’ve been serious about this) by leaps.

10/24/2017 at 3:45 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 331: List and Forget, The Buy And Hold Strategy Of Ebay #24379Incredible vintage clothes finds! Reminds me when I found a Red Sox jacket that I thought was a newer “throwback”, but the RN# dated it to the early 1960s – bought for $5, sold for $250 within a week!
10/24/2017 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 331: List and Forget, The Buy And Hold Strategy Of Ebay #24378Week October 15-21, 2017
Total Items in Store: 927
Items Sold: 25 (5 Amazon)
Cost of Items Sold: $220 (19.6% of sales)
Total Sales: $1,119.84
Highest Price Sold: $200 (1962 #850 Mattel Barbie Bubble Cut Redhead)
Average Price Sold: $44.79

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $290
Number of items listed this week: 41
Promoted listings test: 7 sales, $508.47 (45.4% of total sales), $21.26 fees (4.2% of sales)Really great week in terms of sales, although I was getting greedy and wanted it to be bigger – had $850 in sales on Sunday 10/15, but less than $300 the rest of the week. Sold 2 more vintage Barbies from the lot I mentioned a few weeks back, bringing my sales to $715 on 4 of them (20 more to go, 55% of my investment back).
Pushed hard to get a bunch of items listed that were getting back logged since we’ll be away this weekend (also purged about 20 listings that were old & not moving – donating and taking the write off). Headed to New Orleans for the first time over Halloween – Saturday through Wednesday. Should be interesting!
