I’m late to the party, and it may have been discussed in last week’s forum, but was that glitch of auto relisting without photos solved? I need to dig in and check my listings.

Some really great picks this week, including some import Beatles/Springsteen/Robert Plant bootleg LPs (https://ebay.to/2z9Xrqa). Already sold 2 within hours of listing which covered my complete investment in them. Also got this killer Harley Davidson patch for a couple bucks that I was excited about (https://www.ebay.com/itm/202355797483).

Went to an interesting sale on Saturday and filled up several bags of bread & butter items – a box of vintage flash bulbs https://www.ebay.com/itm/192578305817, a box of early cassette tapes dated 1972 https://www.ebay.com/itm/192578302299, several bottles of high end perfumes https://www.ebay.com/itm/192578385718, boxes of NIB golf balls https://www.ebay.com/itm/202349186006, first edition Godfather with dust jacket https://www.ebay.com/itm/202349168479. All good stuff that shouldn’t take too long to sell.
Happy birthday, Ryanne!

Promoted listings test: 12 sales, $467.95 (73.8% of total sales), $22.84 fees (4.9% of sales)Nice steady week. It was really front loaded, selling about 60% of my total last Sunday to start the week. Mainly bread & butter, although those two Led Zeppelin bootleg sales to the same person were really nice and booted my average price sold.
No sourcing or listing this week as traveled to see my wife’s parents for Father’s Day. Spent a nice relaxing day BBQing and sitting outside on a gorgeous day.
Week June 3-9, 2018
Total Items in Store: 891

Cost of Items Sold: $29 (11.3% of sales)

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $125
Number of items listed this week: 21
Promoted listings test: 4 sales, $102.48 (39.8% of total sales), $6.03 fees (5.9% of sales)Pretty slow week for me, but it was interesting that it didn’t seem as slow as the numbers show. Guess my life was busy enough to pick up the slack. Excited for this week’s numbers as I sold over $300 on Sunday alone.
Sales were all bread & butter: records, small decor, a jacket, etc. While nothing exciting or high dollar sold, that left my COGS incredibly low – I’m usually around 20% but this 11% is quite good.
Outside of these sales, also ran several auctions on a FB group I belong to for charity – one of the group members had a daughter pass from cancer so we held an event to donate to medical & travel expenses for her treatment… sellers donated inventory & free shipping, buyers bid early & often, and all proceeds went to the family. I personally raised close to $200 and we’re awaiting the final total from the group. Felt good to contribute to a very worthy cause and it cleared out some of my old inventory as well as helps with a tax write-off.
As always, incredible sales on that vintage stereo equipment!
Similarly, I pulled out like 10 Ringo Starr 45s from a big lot I bought to list separately, but everything else I put together. Priced high, ended up selling for a $125 best offer: https://www.ebay.com/itm/192242089549
Yes, in the grand scheme of things doesn’t matter… but on days like today when I haven’t even received a message or an offer let alone an actual sale, I always like to check.
Anyone else seeing anomalies in listing metrics? I just checked out a few items that I listed over the weekend just to make sure they were “turned on” and several of them have 0 views, but with watchers. How can you watch something if you don’t view it? Specifically this listing shows 0 views and 4 watchers since listing on Saturday: https://www.ebay.com/itm/192557239390
I’m sure it’s just a glitch, just strange.
Awesome! We also use our eBay money for vacations/trips that might not otherwise be possible!
I like the theme of the show this week… a couple examples below (one good sale and one bad sale) about scavenging off the Joneses.
Week May 27- June 2, 2018
Total Items in Store: 946
Items Sold: 21 (1 Facebook)
Cost of Items Sold: $167 (29.2% of sales)
Total Sales: $572.43
Highest Price Sold: $90 (Fred brand prescription glasses https://www.ebay.com/itm/202271980984)
Average Price Sold: $27.26
Returns: 1
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $110
Number of items listed this week: 14
Promoted listings test: 8 sales, $218.98 (38.3% of total sales), $12.87 fees (5.9% of sales)Pretty decent week of sales, nothing crazy but moving out some old inventory I have on deep discount. Also started a store promotion, 20% off 3+ records, since I’m closing in on 500 records in my store and need to move some things for storage sake. Nothing sold through that promotion yet, but I just started it.
On to a couple sales about Scavenging off the Jonses. First, the bad/mistake… a few months ago I went to a super high end estate sale – multi million dollar home, couple liquidating their goods due to a divorce, etc. I ended up spending about $1200 on high end items – Chanel & Valentino shoes, Cartier sunglasses, a pile of designer prescription glasses, etc. I got caught up in the quality and brand names and admittedly overpaid on several of the items. I sold one of those items – the Fred prescription glasses – this weekend. I thought I could get $200+ for them, but after several offers I finally cracked and took a $90 offer (I paid about $60 for them, this was one of the big drivers of my poor COGS ratio). I didn’t lose money, but none of us can survive on low margins like that.
Now the good example. This past Saturday morning I was at a similar sale – tons of super high end goods, but I stuck to my budget. Instead of hitting those Gucci loafers, I looked at the table of accessories and spotted a brand new Montblanc passport cover. Perfect. And the sellers were too focused on the thousands of dollars of hand bags & shoes – I picked it up and asked how much and they said “take it for $1”. Amazing. Listed and sold within 2 hours of listing for $75 (which was a steal based on other listings https://www.ebay.com/itm/202330441405).
Felt good to get back out to sales – hadn’t gone to an estate sale for nearly a month due to other commitments & holidays plus reorging my inventory (which is awesome now).
05/28/2018 at 5:34 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 362: Scavengers Are Always Prepared To Clean Out A Basement #41147My birthday is coming up in July. I don’t want to go somewhere beach-y or hot, so we’re thinking about Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Denmark combo) or like PacNW (Vancouver, Seattle, Portland combo). Will def keep everyone posted!
05/28/2018 at 4:44 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 362: Scavengers Are Always Prepared To Clean Out A Basement #41144Great story today! I’m sure you didn’t wake up in the morning and expect to go haul some “trash”, but your lifestyle that you’ve worked so hard for allowed that. You had the time to help out, load up the truck, haul things away – which is exactly what your friend needed – and then also got a few hundred dollars worth of inventory as payment. Win-win for everyone!
Week May 20-26, 2018
Total Items in Store: 929
Items Sold: 17 (3 Amazon)
Cost of Items Sold: $51 (10.3% of sales)
Total Sales: $495.48

Average Price Sold: $29.15

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $400
Number of items listed this week: 43
Promoted listings test: 7 sales, $167.20 (33.7% of total sales), $8.36 fees (5.0% of sales)Another week that “felt” much slower than it actually was, likely because 8 of my 17 sales this week were last Sunday. All in all, still solid and my COGS were very lower for me. Sold quite a few very low dollar items, clearance items, old items. So all good.
I took the long weekend & some terrible weather on Saturday to get to listing & stay productive. Got a nice chuck of items listed including some high dollar items (Nirvana Unplugged white vinyl https://www.ebay.com/itm/192552704391, George Harrison All Things Must Pass with the very rare poster https://www.ebay.com/itm/192552827060, and a couple Led Zeppelin bootlegs https://www.ebay.com/itm/192552221812 & https://www.ebay.com/itm/202324073310).
Also, forgot to mention a few weeks ago that I crossed a milestone that I cross each year and celebrate – my sales exceed my total cost of inventory. It’s always a great feeling to cross that threshold because I could sell nothing the rest of the year and not lose any money and also god forbid a disaster destroys my inventory or I have a medical emergency, I won’t lose any money.
Exactly, depending on the record. I sold a sealed Kiss Love Gun for $200 a couple weeks ago – open even in near perfect condition would be worth maybe $35-$40 max (in normal condition would be closer to $20). I recently picked up a sealed Rolling Stones record that I have up for $350.
Amazing… you need that much free space to be storing boat propellers! What other neat/unique/big items do you have laying around down there in the basement?

Number of items listed this week: 0
Promoted listings test: 11 sales, $339.44 (52.7% of total sales), $16.97 fees (5.0% of sales)Nice solid, slightly above average week for me. Nothing crazy interesting sold, and I continue to run deep discount sales on old stuff to move it out. I started at the top of my longest days listed items and started to redo the descriptions and add more product identifiers. Always a small sample size and not sure if it actually did anything in the search rankings, but within 2 days sold 3 of the items that I revised.
Spent the weekend finishing up the reorg of my inventory in the storage unit. Lookin good. even decided to keep all the records I have listed in the room where I list – even though it’s set up like a reading room/den area, I have my record player set up and a long wicker storage bench under the window that lifts to reveal over 400 records. Since that’s my top seller, they’re always accessible to pack & ship and even listen to as I wanted. Rockin’ out to a little Def Leppard Hysteria right now as I pack some sales.
