Picked up a small yellow jug at the local thrift shop. Pretty nondescript except that it had an unusual mark on the base- an oak tree and a s****ika. It was made by Ashtead Potters, a pottery set up to support disabled servicemen from the Great War. The s****ika was the year mark for 1928. Went to list it on eBay with the word s****ika in the title- got a warning that it was illegal to sell anything with a s****ika. Changed the word to “mark”. Sold the same day to someone who seems to have an interest in pottery.
Funny thing is, there’s a big Hindu population in Leicester. So we had a S****tik Grocery, and chalked s****ikas on doorsteps, and quite a few objects turn up in the local thrift shops decorated with s****ikas.
I’ve stopped correcting buyer’s names and addresses when I’m printing labels. You know that thing where an angry troll WRITES EVERYTHING IN CAPS? It’s the opposite way round on eBay, with extra placenames that the post office doesn’t need. Gotta send a parcel now to john doe, the small cottage next to the big pigsty, nempnett thrubwell, burrington combe, bristol, zummerzet bs13 ru1.
According to his Wikipedia article the book’s an anthology of short stories, maybe by different authors as Beyer was a literary critic and professor rather than an author. Published 1966.
Vintage Doc Martens= “Bovver Boots”, weapon of choice for the 1970s skinheads and football hooligans. The rest of the uniform is a Crombie overcoat, jeans with their legs rolled up and braces. I think red Docs were the thing at one time. As far as I remember, they go up to 20 holes- ten each side.

I did “promote” a postcard at 50% a day ago. No extra views, but a) made three sales elsewhere, and an enquiry on a £750 artwork b) realised that most of the stuff I’ve listed is cr*p, and I’d better pull my socks up. So… it was useful 🙂
I just checked, and I can set the rate to 100%. What happens at 100%? (apart from me losing a barrowload of money if the item sells) Does eBay’s main page get replaced by my listing?
I read it, and I re-read it, and I re-read it again, and I think what they’re trying to say is that the “built environment” is constantly evolving, but at the moment it’s cold and wet, and here’s your waterproof shoes.
Had to check the Wikipedia article on Ocado- I’ve seen the vans but as it’s an online shop I’ve got no experience of it. Especially as it was partnered with Waitrose, which is expensive. I once saw a jar of green garden twine retailing at 5 GBP there! That’s a few cents worth of string in a jam jar.
Never heard of D&D so of course I had to google it. Apparently “Draper’s and Damon’s, an 85-year-old women’s clothing chain, is closing all its stores.” Yeah, we’ve got one like that, a clothing store for 85-year-old women, it’s called Marks and Spencers.
U3A is University of the Third Age, and- due to the miracles of modern medicine- there is now a University of the Fourth Age or U4A. But no ‘E’!
The numbers have a German look. Think they’re Austrian; part of a “grey-green loden jacket and lederhosen” maybe (“Textiles, Fashion, and Design Reform in Austria-Hungary Before the First World War” Rebecca House, p.16)
[This might be totally useless advice] I use an old version of Photoshop to open pdf’s- Gimp or other editing programs may be able to do the same. The Royal Mail postage label has a QR code which is the important bit, along with the destination address; the rest (RM and eBay logo and my full postal address) I modify so they don’t use up as much ink. I convert the logos into outlines. Flipping the label on its side, I can fit it and the invoice on one sheet of paper.
Some pdf’s don’t open properly. On a Mac you can use screen grab to produce a printable file.
For some items I use high density foam, cut to shape with a knife. Offcuts can be combined with peanuts.
I worked for the post office at Christmas for a number of years, so I got to see close-up what happens to parcels! Five-foot drop off a conveyor belt etc. Also how small some house’s letter boxes can be- the one on a 1880s house I lived in was about 4 inches by 2 inches. The days when the butler or maid answered the door are long gone!
