02/08/2017 at 6:18 pm #12086I just received a package with the item in it, but no return was initiate. The customer just wrote on the invoice that the item was too small. I’m just not sure what to do and surprised that they made no effort to contact me or open a return on ebay.

02/09/2017 at 1:12 am #12110I’ve had this happen before. I just gave them a refund (minus 20% if you have your restock fee) and I don’t refund shipping either way, I think the last time I did that the customer lost money returning the item to me because she paid $10 in shipping ($5 to them and $5 back) and the item was worth $10 so $8 returned minus restock fee. Take a picture of the invoice or save it if incase there is a stink raised about it. You could also cancel the sale if you want your final value fee back but unless the item is worth a lot I don’t bother.

02/09/2017 at 4:20 pm #12170Ok I need to update myself because I just today had to deal with this case. So the buyer did not open a return case but sent back the item anyway (we did talk in messages so at least I got that documented). Great now I want to do the refund but if I try to cancel the order it gives a full refund. So you actually need to message the buyer and ask them to open a case cause there is no way on your end to do it other than to cancel the order but that gives them back full amount plus shipping. I’m only doing this because I went out of my way to give this lady measurements and she still said it did not fit (she said it’s not a Junior XL… nowhere in my listing does it say it’s a Junior item) so I’m not paying for shipping on principle! I do know sometimes it’s easier to just eat the cost but sometimes people gotta pay for making you work.

02/10/2017 at 8:23 am #12206You can do a refund directly through Paypal. Log into Paypal, click on the line item from the original purchase, and then click “Issue a Refund”. You can give a partial refund by typing in the amount you want to give back. There is a place to add a message to explain the amount “I am refunding your purchase minus shipping …”. If there is any question in the future, eBay will be able to see the refund because it is associated with the original purchase. I’ve done this before when someone did not open a return (although, the buyer has always contacted me before). Seems like you’ve already gone down the path of having them open a return, but you can possibly keep this in mind for the future.

02/10/2017 at 9:00 am #12210Also know that you won’t get final value fee’s back unless they open a return. Again you can get final value fees back if you cancel the item but you have to issue a full refund to cancel. This might not be a big deal on cheaper items… Honestly if I sell a shirt and its $10 and All I loose is $2.61 to shipping and like $1 in fees to not have to deal with a customer it’s worth it.

02/12/2017 at 2:27 pm #12366I contacted my buyer but they decided they didn’t want to go through the return process. I feel like they misunderstood when I said that I wanted to refund them, minus the shipping and 20% restocking fee… They replied and told me they didn’t know there was one and to give it to goodwill. I think they thought I was going to charge them more? Anyway, I guess the only thing to do is relist the item. -

02/12/2017 at 11:19 pm #12382If you want to be nice, you can just send them a Paypal refund directly for the amount you think is fair. Just follow the steps Sharyn outlined above. You can choose the amount. -
