Thanks everyone for the auction tips! I find them daunting, so I especially like just going to see one first.
I had no idea what a ‘gongoozler’ was either…
I’ve been checking Craig’s list, and our local Front Porch Forum. So far they haven’t turned up much, but I expect this too will change with the seasons. I’ve tried looking at Ebay as well, but I suspect my inexperience is tripping me up here, as I haven’t found much so far.
Fortunately, we still have a bit to list from the ridiculous excess we’ve toted around for years. That, plus some experiments should get us through til Spring – then people garage sale like they’ve been stuck indoors for 5 months or so!

I think I need to experiment more with online scavenging. That, and I am realizing that in Vermont I am likely going to have to do things really seasonally – i.e. scavenge more than I can list over the summer months, and then spend the winter hibernation months getting it listed. This past summer I was still very hesitant about over-purchasing, now I can see that I will need to get the items while the garage sale season is strong! That, and I want to get up the courage to try an auction sometime.
Being really new to all this, I very much appreciate your post. We are taking this really slowly, building up a base before jumping in too deep – but someday we hope to get out from under all our debt, and downsize as well. For now we are really doing Ebay for vacations and to be on the learning curve while we still have regular income.
Hello from Vermont!
I’ve been enjoying your podcast for a while now, ever since my sister told me about it.
My partner and I sold on Ebay a long time ago, but let it drop completely. Now we’re about 4 months back into it, and liking it a lot more!
I am considering moving to this as a full time deal, but only very slowly, with a great deal of caution. I have long thought that I’d be far happier as my own boss, and I am the sort of person who can structure their own time and persist until what needs to get done gets done. It has to be slow, because I have kids, debt and an hour long commute that eats all my time, but I am best when I do things incrementally anyway.
My current career, while satisfying in the sense of making a difference in the world, does not pay well, takes a lot of time, and of late seems to involve some physical risk to myself. So it has become a little more urgent to me to make some changes.
We seem to be doing reasonably well on Ebay given how new to this we are (big learning curve!). I guess my biggest worry is sourcing in Vermont. We were originally from Pennsylvania in a busy area where I could find the most amazing things for super-cheap at the local Goodwills. In Vermont there is much more of a ‘use it up’ philosophy, and a lot less people to get rid of things. I think we’ll probably end up sourcing all summer long when Vermonters actually come outside and love yard sales, and then list all winter long when it seems any Vermonter not skiing is hibernating. We may consider moving someday, but that would be after the kids are out of school.
We like to sell pretty much anything that we can find room to store, but we have a long way to go before we have anything like a ‘real’ store. For now, while we learn, Ebay is helping us pay for our biggest addiction – Travel.
