Independent contractors are not employees. They generally are not entitled to things employees might be entitled to, but worker misclassification can be a concern when hiring an individual as an independent contractor. (As Uber has learned.) There can be unforeseen issues if the relationship sours or something happens and it is determined the person should have been hired as an employee rather than an independent contractor because of how the job is set up. Local professional advice to help try and avoid that and what risks there are is best since there are state laws and policies that can vary, besides the federal issues. Local SBA or SCORE counselors can also be a resource.
I haven’t watched the show but I have to say from personal experience that in military special operations, it is the nerdier types who make the best operators. It sounds like the show may be getting the loudmouths who you could never be sure you could trust to hang when the going got tough, whether alone on a mission or not. We called them “legends in their own minds”.
That’s a good question. For a while Pirateship was really good because they were using something called cubic rate but not so much anymore. Over the last year I would say that any bigger package going any greater distance is cheapest by far by FedEx Ground/Home on eBay.
Off of eBay, I also have a FedEx shipping account – no special commercial rate or anything. I rarely use it. Out of curiosity just now I plugged in your 13x12x12 at 2.9-3 lbs to go from Jacksonville to a buddy’s address in Medina WA and it came in at $29.11 by FedEx Home. That’s $9 better and going across the entire country, not half like yours, but it’ll take 10 days….
UPS isn’t even close. All carriers jack it way up over 12x12x12 / 1728 cu in, they call it “dim weight”.
Thanks for the tip. Last time I used it I think I got to it a different way. Probably changes all the time….

I have one of those penguin servers now – used as an ice bucket on the cocktail bar for parties. (No, we have not had one for a while.)
Some recent sales over the summer:
This large Victorian pier mirror was mounted on the wall in the house we bought here. This type of piece was a fixture in New York brownstones in their heyday. Sort of a hall stand with no bottom cabinet. I didn’t even know what it really was until I had it on Craigslist as simply an “antique mirror” and someone contacted me about what I would take for my pier mirror. “My what? Sure, my pier mirror, yeah.” There was strange drama with the Craigslist buyer who was out of town and kept trying to send me money different ways, none of which worked, so I finally went silent on him. Not a scam, just a weird guy, I think. These mirrors are not really built very solidly, just a 200 lb mirror with trim tacked around it. This one ended up in pieces when the contractor doing our renovations tried to move it and it also had some poorly done previous repairs. Hence me taking a best offer of $230 to a buyer in NC who sent a U-Ship to pick it up.

I learned a bit about old cell phones in researching this 1990 car phone with case aka brick phone. I never had one of these monstrosities in the ‘90s so didn’t know much about it. It was $2; filthy and laying in the dirt at an outdoor flea market. I started to clean it but lost interest so sold it as is with full disclosure for $20 plus shipping. It went to a car shop that restores Cadillacs. The buyer opened an INAD for “doesn’t seem authentic” so I sent him an eBay label through the return rather than argue with him, figuring he was just fishing for a discount. And I guess he was because I never got it back.

Here’s one of the consignment challenge coins that sold earlier this summer, one from a Navy 4 Star Admiral, Commander of PACFLEET at the time. It sold for $49 plus shipping.

This US Army jungle camouflage shirt with the desirable slanted chest pockets bore a 1970 contract date so it was made during the Vietnam War. In NOS condition without patches. I don’t know where I got it but I’ve had it for years. It sold for $160 plus shipping.

This Nerf Super Soaker pump action water gun is the type of thing I prefer not to sell. Not worth very much and a bit large and heavy so I assume the total cost will only be viable for nearby buyers. But it is easy to pack, not delicate, and it was from the family donation box so I figured nothing to lose in putting it up. This sale proved me wrong a bit, the item going for $16 and the buyer paying $23 in shipping to get it to CA by Priority Mail, rather than paying half that for FedEx Home. OK!
https://www.ebay.com/itm/153880402856I have no clue what it is but it’s really neat. I’d hang it on my wall!
That sounds reasonable. Thanks!

I picked up a friend’s challenge coin horde on consignment when he retired last year and have found it to be much less trouble than I thought it would be since I use Easy Auctions Tracker. It also helps that the terms are the same as yours and complete freedom with it so it’s zero hassle.
When I lived in Philly my father lived in Hummelstown, near Harrisburg. I spent a lot of time out there and it was very good pickings. Some amazing large flea markets too.

Nice surprise! I love free money. The email shows me registered on 11-23-1997, which I believe is correct though much of the rest of the information is not. It shows my first purchase in 2001 and first sale in 2008 which are way off as I started buying and selling immediately. I put a bunch of military items up (mainly $5-$10-$15 stuff) to test the waters but my first big sale was a Shwinn Orange Crate bicycle owner’s manual that went for $79.50 on December 10, 1997. On a 7 day auction starting at .99! I was hooked. Prior to that I had sold at flea markets and other live venues mostly and sent pricier items off to specialty live and mail order auctions or sold direct to antique dealers and collectors. Ebay was an amazing development.

It put me in a better mood than I was in earlier this morning after I blew a manual snipe that would have been worth upwards of $100 net profit. My bid went in too late due to temporary slow internet that started just at the wrong time. I should have just put the bid on Gixen but I was wanting that sniper rush. Instead, I got the agony of defeat as the item sold for its opening bid. Of course I could have lost the item even if the bid went in, but I’m braced for that. Now I’ll never know if I could have gotten it or not.

New Items Listed: 10

I am scheduled to get Managed Payments in my main store tomorrow so I’m planning to end all my challenge coin listings in that store tonight. I’ve heard that the cancel ‘bots are very liberal with taking down anything related at all to coins since they are still prohibited in Managed Payments. Once the changeover is complete I’ll try and put just one back up as an experiment. If I’m unable to post it or it doesn’t survive, it will be easier to move the rest of them to my non-store seller ID by copying from the old listings.
And… eBay from Firefox is now down. It appears fully functioning on my iphone but only on mobile data, not wifi.
I should have said that Firefox is working fine. I just tried to open my store that I keep on Chrome and it’s showing the DNS error.
Hah. Didn’t even notice those metal strips. I think you’ve called it, AF.
It’s working fine for me.
