Come to think of it, both shops I mentioned are Lighthouse Ministries locations (in different cities). While they may have an intention of selling things to those “in need”, their main mission is to fund their homes and shelters, where they do great work for people at the end of their rope with nowhere else to go. So discouraging customers who buy a lot and buy often just seems incredibly counter-productive to their own cause.
I wonder how much of it has to do with the same mentality some yard salers have, where they feel they’re somehow being “gotten” or “made a fool of” by those who profit off of things they sell. I very rarely reveal to someone having a yard sale or flea marketing that I’m a reseller. You have to feel the situation out. Sometimes it can be to your benefit to do so, but some sellers get offended by the thought that you’ll make money off of them.
I can see how that might cause confusion, but it seems like you’d quickly realize that you just committed to make a purchase and wouldn’t find yourself waiting on a “buyer” to pay you. I too have had buyers make offers, I accepted and never received payment. But those cases never seemed to correlate in any way with offers I’ve sent to watchers.
I think with unpaid offers, they either changed their mind or were just testing the waters. Or maybe they’re fishing around with several sellers at once. But that’s just my own speculation.
One thing I think might cause a lot of the cases where someone orders then immediately asks to cancel (and it may well be the culprit with some of these unpaid offers) is when you buy something, a lot of times at the bottom of the page eBay will show other sellers’ listings that are cheaper than your own (sometimes those sellers are on a completely different site). So immediately after buying something, they are shown ads or other listings that are cheaper and they decide to cancel and go with them instead.
