I’m always impressed by Steve’s ability to fix old electronics like the tube radio in the beginning of his video. I’d love to have the knowledge and confidence to do that.
Update: The issue I mentioned above appears to have been resolved now.
I have a problem that appears to be related to MP this afternoon. I tried to print shipping labels. The only visible option to pay for the label was PayPal even though I’d been able to use MP funds a couple of days ago. I have money in my PayPal account but the shipping label couldn’t be created and I received a generic “Error creating label: Sorry, something went wrong and we could not work out the reason. Please try again later.” error. The money for the label was taken out of my paypal account and immediately refunded. Super annoying. I ended up manually creating labels through PayPal.com/shipnow
I just checked my numbers for July. I sent 17 items overseas using eBay Standard International Delivery. The amount I was charged matches what was quoted when I created the labels. No discrepancies here.
I sold a charger today for $39.95 that I took off an e-waste (aka free) pile at an estate sale a couple of weeks ago.
But my best free flip in the last couple of months was a SONY Walkman WM-D6 (cassette player) that I took from an “Everything is free” yard sale that I walked by randomly in my neighborhood. It didn’t work but sold for $132.95 for the player and $49.95 for the flimsy faux leather case that it came in.
I tried to connect my ebay account and it just kept giving 500 errors so I just registered manually instead.
I’ve seen a couple of threads recently (on Facebook/Reddit) where people were complaining about being charged insertion fees when it should have been free so something may be buggy in that area.
08/04/2020 at 2:06 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 474: How Do We Only Sell High Priced Items All The Time? #80338Thanks for the podcast this week.
Here are my numbers:
Total Items in Store: 3978
Items Sold: 64
Total Sales: $1421.73
Cost of Items Sold: $276
Average Price Sold: $22.21
Average Cost of Item: $4.32
Highest Price Item Sold: $89.95 SHARP VIEWCAM VL-Z3U Mini DV Camcorder
Number of items listed this week: 63 worth approx. $1846
YTD Sales: $34920
YTD sales compared to this time last year: +17%
Average age of items in store (in days since listing): 462
Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 239
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 66Another pretty decent week and a good end to the month.
Sales for the month of July : 287 (65% more than for July last year)
Value of Sales for July: 6104 (38% more than July last year)Congrats on the good art sale. I consider a $200 sale to be a great sale. I only get a handful of those per year.
Complaints for the week…. thanks for listening 🙂
– A seller cancelled a sale as “Buyer requested to cancel” when they were out of stock. ebay doesn’t provide a way to dispute that reason without calling. Annoying.
– Reserve auctions – why do people use them? I bid at auction but the reserve wasn’t met because there wasn’t another person for me to bid against so the auction never hit my max bid. The buyer might have made a sale if they just started the auction at the price they wanted.
– I had an ebay seller (who is running an auction I’m going to bid on) ask me why I was interested in their lot of manuals today. That’s a first for me. (I had asked them to switch the listing to media mail). I’m not answering because I don’t want to lie and I don’t want them to get upset to find out I’m going to resell. It’s kinda an awkward question.Anyway, hope everyone has a great week.
07/30/2020 at 12:29 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 473: Does Insurance Make You An Adult? #80174Based on what you’ve said on the show, being part of the community is important to you so it makes sense that you’d want to have personal relationships with all those people in your town.
Btw, fwiw, my current policy is $650/yr for 20yr $750K term life insurance policy. I took a quick look on that Term4Sale website and I was getting similar quotes to my premium (assuming I was the same age I was at when I got my policy though i’m a bit older than that now).
The majority of my items are lower value items (eg: hats that cost around $20 or less). I switched from GSP to direct international shipping for “safe countries” (Australia, UK, parts of Europe) a couple of years ago and then before the pandemic I switched to Ebay Standard international delivery (aka “eBay Send) for most of my lower value items because i) it was slightly cheaper for customers than direct international shipping for my “safe” countries and ii) it was much much cheaper than GSP for other countries. Through the pandemic lock-in months I got a significant uptick in international sales. It still fees like I get more international sales than previously.
On low-value sales I don’t think many countries charge import duties. I’ve had zero complaints about customers having to pay import fees. I still keep GSP on higher value items for my own peace of mind. I can recommend eBay Send for lower value items for sure.
Thanks for the info. I’ve added that to my list of things to watch while I list.
A&E is about to start a show called “What’s it worth?” that also appears to be about people with collections that want to know the value of what they have : https://www.aetv.com/shows/whats-it-worth I believe it starts next week.
And totally off topic, A&E also has a show starting next week called Extreme Unboxing that is about people that buy and re-sell return pallets. I’ll watch a couple of episodes but I find return pallet videos on youtube to be pretty boring.
07/29/2020 at 1:19 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 473: Does Insurance Make You An Adult? #80132For anyone looking for term life insurance, it’s worth looking at services that can shop a lot of companies at once. I used SelectQuote.com a couple of times. It used to be that you’d never talk to a sales person though that may not be the case these days.
There are other (possibly better) options now including http://www.term4sale.com and http://www.policygenius.com
I’m the opposite of Ryan and Jay. I have no personal relationship with insurance agents and I shop primarily based on cost (as long as the insurance company isn’t a fly-by-night outfit) since I almost never make claims or have a need to speak to a person.
07/27/2020 at 6:54 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 473: Does Insurance Make You An Adult? #80034Hi Everyone.
Thanks for the podcast J&R!
Here are my numbers for the week:
Total Items in Store: 3979
Items Sold: 72
Total Sales: $1514.74
Cost of Items Sold: $253
Average Price Sold: $21.04
Average Cost of Item: $3.52
Highest Price Item Sold: $84.95 Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness Nintendo GameCube
Number of items listed this week: 76 worth approx. $1904
YTD Sales: $33478
YTD sales compared to this time last year: +16%
Average age of items in store (in days since listing): 453
Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 319
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 141.5
Sell-through rate (for the week): 1.81%
Hats sold this week: 58 (80% of sales) worth $1009 (66% of sales $)I had a very busy week this week. Shipping was annoying yesterday which is always a good sign. So many hat sales …. supplemented with the results of being able to source new stuff at a few garage/estate sales. My biggest sale of the week was a video game I found mixed in with some DVDs at a garage sale. I probably paid $1 for it (I bought a pile of stuff for $10).
You’re brave to send that $100 coat to a repeat buyer/return-er. Hope it works out this time.
The call-in about toilet paper tubes is funny. I save up the micro altoid tins and sell them in piles of 20 which pays for a good percentage of the mints. I also have 10 years worth of beer bottle lids in my garage that I will sell one day (I’m still adding to it regularly).
Hope everyone has a good week!
07/24/2020 at 4:34 pm in reply to: Re-assess your fixed costs (mortgage, insurance, etc). It is WORTH IT! #79922Good advice. I shopped all my insurance coverage years ago and saved thousands of dollars annually in the process. ( I have a lot of insurance :- house, multiple cars, life, flood, earthquake, umbrella). It’s sad that these days there’s a loyalty penalty for staying with the same insurance company. The longer you stay with one company, the more likely you’ll be overpaying. I’m sure it’s time for me to re-shop my insurance.
I refinanced into a 15 yr 2.625% mortgage around 2014. I thought I’d got the absolute lowest rate so I’m surprised to hear about Amatino’s even-lower rate. That’s amazing!
Since this thread is being revived it might be a good time to remind people about using this website for tracking those Ebay Standard International Delivery packages all the way through to delivery: http://parcelsapp.com/en/tracking
Apart from providing additional detail, it also provides an additional estimated delivery date. I’ve been sending my buyers a link to this site which seems to be effective.
Recently, I’ve only been getting complaints from Canada. It still seems to be taking weeks extra to reach addresses in Canada due to long processing times by Canadian customs.
