Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 203
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 109
Sell-through rate (for the week): 1.08%It was interesting timing that this podcast happened to come out just before the stock market took a big dive and got everyone thinking and talking about a recession. We’ve had a lot of good years (economically) since the last big downturn. Hopefully we don’t see another one of those big downturns again any time soon.
The caller to the podcast about Managed Payments confirmed my resolve (like R&J) to avoid that system until we’re forced into it. I don’t understand the connection between the type of items you sell and the payment system unless the new payment system has some kind of extra controls around currency. I also dont understand the GSP connection at all unless it requires a special interface with Pitney Bowes for some reason.
Hope everyone sells lots of trash this week!
I have never attempted to repair a snapback strap. I’m not handy with a sewing machine and I doubt I’d do a good job at it. If it’s worth $30 when repaired, I wouldn’t even consider doing it myself given the time requirement. Those straps break pretty infrequently so I’ve never found it worthwhile to develop that skill. Broken and destroyed hats generally just go straight in the trash around here though I’ve take a few patches off hats if I think they would sell on their own.
Being in CA, I assume its yard sale season all year round
Yep. There is at least a trickle all year round. During the warmer months the volume definitely increases and the amount of driving required is reduced.
I haven’t listened to the show yet. I’ll do that on the way to my full time grind/job.
Here are my numbers for the week. Pretty typical week. I ran a hat sale which generated a few extra sales I think.
Total Items in Store: 3224
Items Sold: 40
Total Sales: $964.20
Cost of Items Sold: $89
Average Price Sold: $24.11
Average Cost of Item: $2.23

Average age of items in store (in days since listing): 384
Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 152
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 80
Sell-through rate (for the week): 1.24%I’ve got a decent pile of unlisted stuff accumulating now but it’s also prime garage sale sourcing time so I’m torn between buying and listing. A common problem around here I suppose.
Hope everyone has a fun and profitable week.
According to Joe at the Crazy NY Driver YouTube channel here are some other things coming soon:
– multi-user eBay accounts are now available – this should be helpful for Ryanne and Jay with their photo-taking helper. You can now delegate restricted access to that person.
– partial refunds for false INADs (and items return damaged) even without offering free shipping – starting Oct. 1st07/26/2019 at 6:20 pm in reply to: Annual Rant About Ebay's Shipping Supplies-3rd Year in a row #65463The tissue paper used to be different colors but the latest batch that came just had black “ebay”s on it. Not quite as interesting though at least I no longer have to match up the red tissue paper with red hats, the blue tissue paper with blue hats etc at shipping time.
@The Thrift Raider – thanks for the list. #2 sounds like it would be helpful for me. I spend a lot of time dropping backgrounds from my photos.
Does anyone here use Managed payments yet? I know some sellers have opted in.
The upsides of using managed payments were so minor I’m surprised that anyone opted into that. I haven’t heard that they have enabled GSP yet (and I still don’t understand the connection) and I don’t recall whether PayPal has been added as a payment option. For those 2 reasons I don’t use it.
Hi @Mark S –
Yes, I have a higher-quanity, lower-value model for my business at present. I sell a lot of hats which are low value. The upside is that they are very easy to pack and ship. They are also easier to list than most clothes since measurements aren’t generally required. I’d like to sell higher value items but with a full-time job, my sourcing hours are generally limited to the weekends (and whatever I can find online). My wife helps with creating listings and taking photos which enables me to list a fairly high number of new items every week. If I wasn’t working full-time I’d be able to list a lot more. (I’m ow 11 months away from retiring from my full time job.)– Simon
@Mark S – Thanks for the info but that hasn’t been my problem. Up to this point I haven’t been able to actually switch business policies on. I click the button to opt in and it just gives me an error and I never see any business policies. It’s been a while since I tried. I’ll give it another shot.
I’ve tried to switch on business policies a couple of times over the last year or so. I get an error and the set up never completes. I’ve called eBay and they haven’t been able to help.

Hope everyone sells lots of junk this week 🙂
@Mark S : Do you have a link that you can share to the anchor store offer? I’m at 3,176 listings now so I’m also on the verge of needing to upgrade to an anchor store also.
Here’s a message I recently received that was lost in translation.

I wonder if that cold be something like Monkey Pod? It seems like a pretty choice for bowls and the pattern seems similar to other examples. (I’m not a wood person btw).
