Had a decent week. Here are a few of the more interesting sales:
Lead crystal wine glass etched with part of a Jewish prayer plus a new velvet wine bag – I bought this as part of an online auction lot last summer. Paid just a dollar or two, sold for $35:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/182257796859My big sale of the week was a strut stabilizer for an older BMW. My husband bought it for his 1999 BMW 323 about a decade ago, but then decided not to install it. He still has the car. I was able to sell this part for $75 within about a day of listing it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/182563514343Not my highest sale, but something new for me. This is a high school yearbook from 1952. Battin High School was a public school in Elizabeth, NJ that was all-girls until 1976. It is now a K-8 school. Bought in a yard sale for $1, sold for $18 overnight.

05/18/2017 at 8:37 am in reply to: Clothing sizes are auto-changing on listings. Anyone else? #18188I have had that issue, but it really isn’t a problem. When you pick XL, and it comes up as 4, it means the fourth item in the list of sizes. I created a few listings for clothes recently, and I picked XL, but it came up as a number. After I created the listing, I clicked on the link, and the item specifics showed XL.
So, it is a glitch, but not a problem, if that makes any sense.
I believe that FedEx doesn’t charge you for the cost of the label until it is used. I don’t know about UPS. USPS does charge you, but, at least in eBay, you can ask for a refund if it doesn’t get used.
I’ve heard other people say they’ve had problems in the past week or two. Jay has asked others exactly what steps were taken when the topic was “eaten”. From other other posts, the problem would happen after they created a topic and then tried to edit it.
I did see the email that was sent out when you created the topic. I did have a question about the setup. I notice that it uses CFLs. I wonder why it doesn’t use LEDs and would those be better. I eventually need to get a better lighting system myself. I have decent lighting, but I still have to edit my photos in eBay.

* Total Items in Store: 794
* Items Sold: 16
* Cost of Items Sold: $93.57 (high because of car part) + $5 Commission
* Total Sales: $356.96
* Highest Price Sold: $75 BMW Part – Strut Stabilizer
* Average Price Sold: $22.31
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $20
* Number of items listed this week: 32The BMW strut stabilizer was something my husband bought for his car probably 10 or more years ago. After he bought it, he decided he didn’t like the idea of modifying his car. So, the part has sat in our garage for that long. He still has the car (19 years old). I finally listed it and, it sold within a few days. My COGS are higher because I put in the sale price as the cost price. He bought it for around $120.
For “stale” items, I’ve decided to take some of them and sell at a flea market next weekend. When I first started selling on eBay, I bought some auction lots just because they were so cheap. I’ve found that ordinary household stuff, even some nice china, doesn’t sell well unless there is something really special about them. I did sell some after I added best offer, but I need the space and don’t want to sit on the rest anymore. I’ll sell them for 50 cents here, a dollar there, whatever, but I have so much that I think I will make a few hundred dollars. Enough to justify the flea market rather than donate.
I used the shipping calculator switching between large envelope and envelope. Large envelope, even at 1 ounce, still has a minimum cost of $2.67. If you offer the seller “online rates”, it goes down to $2.61. I don’t see a $2.45 option anywhere.
05/12/2017 at 8:38 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Tapes, Empty reels, LP Record Boxes, Antique photo album, Vtg Bike helmet, Ancient speaker #17886I tried to view this video, but the audio was all garbled. I opened up in YouTube to see if there would be a difference, but the issue was still there.
Update: Nevermind. It was a computer problem. I restarted and all is good.

I think it is better to do it within the eBay system. If there is an issue after you receive the item back, eBay will be able to help; otherwise, they have no evidence that the item has been returned.
The buyer will be able to buy & print a label directly from eBay. I believe that the same discount we get to ship to the seller is also available to the buyer to ship back. Or, I think (but not sure) that there might be a discount on a return label.
That doesn’t make sense. Perhaps you should check your listing and the options you selected? I tried checking the difference between “Package or Thick Envelope” and “Letter”, but letter only goes up to $0.91 for 3 ounces.
Perhaps you can show some screen shots here. Otherwise, you will have to call eBay.
05/11/2017 at 10:31 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Tapes, Empty reels, LP Record Boxes, Antique photo album, Vtg Bike helmet, Ancient speaker #17822Fun vintage frame with print, bought around $5 at auction, sold for $35:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/182339184341I sold some upholstery fabric to a buyer in CA who had just opened an account. She wanted a cheaper shipping rate, so I explained how to select FedEx Smartpost. It shipped May 3 and still isn’t there. Bought for $1.50, sold for $27:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/182296001341I bought an auction lot of vintage copper items (in not great condition), so I grouped a bunch of items into one lot. Paid a dollar or two & sold for $22 through GPS to Canada.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/182556540032I visited my parents last month, and my dad gave me some unopened proxybrush refills that he no longer used. Sold this one for $28:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/18254890137705/10/2017 at 8:26 am in reply to: Insurance – The total Amount minus What we already Recieve?? #17695Hey Mike – I’ve wondered about that in the past, but I never researched for an answer. One issue is you have to submit two insurance claims if something is damaged in shipping. I’m not sure that would be worth the headache.
That said, I think you should ask your question directly to eBay. Perhaps you should save it for a time when you another reason to call them. Or, if I have to call them first, I’ll ask. I’ll be interested to hear the answer.

* Total Items in Store: 778
* Items Sold: 16
* Cost of Items Sold: $13.33 + $0 Commission
* Total Sales: $321
* Highest Price Sold: $40 Harmony Kingdom Collectable Box
* Average Price Sold: $20.06
* Returns: 0
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $3
* Number of items listed this week: about 40Another decent week for me! I did go to some garage sales & flea markets on Saturday, but really didn’t find much. Maybe my area isn’t as good for garage sales or maybe I’m just getting more picky. I’m taking the time now to get through my unlisted items and death piles.
I had a neighbor ask me to sell some Zumba brand clothing on consignment, which I agreed to do at 50% commission. I decided the time was right for me to put together a consignment agreement. I don’t need to have a fancy document with all the legalize; just something that explains terms. Perhaps I will post it here when it is completed.
I was going to go to a flea market and sell my slow selling, low value eBay items, but the weather was overcast with slight showers in the afternoon. I’ve decided to sell at a different one scheduled for May 20.
This sewing machine has no serial number that I can find. It isn’t a Singer anyway.
Underneath the machine, in the bottom of the carrying cover, I found the handwritten number 42101. I double-checked the Singer database, and their serial numbers start with 6 digits and go up.
I just went to the “Manage all Orders” eBay page, and they’ve added a bunch of functionality. One change is now a buyer’s message appears above their item. I know a number of people here have complained that any message that the buyer might leave is buried deep in an email. Often it is missed.
I noticed that a buyer from last week had left me a message that I never noticed. Thankfully, he was only asking that I leave a tracking #, which happens automatically anyway, so no big deal.
They also added other information (or made it more visual) such the date you need to ship by in order to be within your handling time, and then the shipping date once you’ve shipped it.
All-in-all, I think it is good.
05/03/2017 at 9:50 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Wooden clogs, Harley Duffle, View-master, Cateye Glasses, Spode Plates, Boombox #17456Steve – What was the product you used to clean up the volume control?
My interesting items from last week:
I bought this wood & brass barometer at an online auction September of last year. I didn’t list it right away because I didn’t think it was working. I finally did some research and figured out how to calibrate it. It works! The buyer asked if I could get the shipping cost down, so I said that it would fit in a medium flat rate box. WRONG. Not after I wrapped it properly. Paid about $1.50, sold for $42 minus about $6 in extra shipping cost.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=182473827032This is a framed decoupage art piece made in Jerusalem. I bought it for $5 last summer, and it has been gathering dust since. I thought I’d never sell it, but I got an offer of $28.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=182157061295I’m going to just throw this one in here because it’s kinda fun. It is a fake cake that was given to me, and I sold it for $15.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=182545782754About a month ago, I sold a set of Fitz & Floyd dragon napkin rings for $180. I had bought it and this set of silver plated napkin rings for about $14. These sold for $30 through GSP; I think to someone in Italy.
