06/07/2017 at 1:49 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 313: What’s your Backup Plan to eBay? #19117
I have always believed in back up plans. My husband and I are retired and live frugally so we don’t have to “work”. We tried rental houses years ago, not the airbnb model, just buying, fixing up, and renting. Being a landlord is a lot of work. We then moved on to buying and flipping. You risk capital that way but it’s less hands on once the deal is done. We have managed to buy houses for our two eldest children this way. I have tried etsy but as the stuff I sell isn’t vintage, it’s not a good fit for me. I did sell 2 things on poshmark recently so that’s something I am doing more research on. Amazon keeps chugging away for me.
As for the eBay app photo issue, I have an android and it does the same thing. I usually take the photos and store in my gallery and then upload when I make the listing. Every time I have to rotate the photo. It’s annoying. I just updated the app yesterday so maybe hopefully it’s fixed.
06/02/2017 at 11:19 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 312: Is eBay Removing Old listings? #18929Update on the printer: I bought it and it works. Yeah! Took over an hour to set up but now it’s easy peasy. I figure this thing will pay for itself in 2 months, based on me not having to buy shipping labels at staples, and the reduced postage rate for ebay.
Sales for ebay have picked up and amazon is chugging away. I only listed a few things this week cos of the holiday. I feel like all week I have been playing catchup. Even listening to the podcast late.
Yes, thank you ryanne. Where we are now you have to go into town to get wifi (fast food restaurants, bus depot). I was looking for something that can be done over bluetooth. I been researching the Epson Expression
and it’s not that much so may order it. I bought the hp envy last year and couldn’t get it to work. Right now I get my labels for amazon at staples, and hand write labels for ebay. I could save more money in the long run with a printer. My sales on ebay dropped off too. I only sold 4 items for a grand total of $82.
I’m a part timer on ebay and while I am retired from the workplace, I think what keeps people working is the stability of a paycheque. I never would have had the guts to go full time selling without a net like you two did. It’s admirable.
Any scavengers who have recommendations for a bluetooth printer? We are RVers and need something that will work for the phone. /printer talk
05/15/2017 at 7:38 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 310: Am I Selling on eBay the Wrong Way? #18063I understand why calling it a side hustle would be insulting. You can still run it as a business and do it on the side. It doesn’t bother me, and I’ve been guilty of using the term. Sometimes I call it that, or say I sell online to downplay it. Maybe the side hustle nation leads to the term being used more frequently. Perhaps side gig would be less annoying of a term.
I have cleared some things from inventory both on ebay and amazon. Mostly things that didn’t have much of a profit and they had been stagnant. I donated the clothes, and had amazon dispose (read: they sell it dirt cheap) some of the books and toys that had been sitting there.
This is my first time sharing numbers.
Total Items in Store: I don’t have a ebay store. I have 42 things listed. I try to stay within a 50 item limit of listings.
Items Sold: 6 on ebay, 78 on amazon
Total Sales: hard to figure this out. Total sales on ebay was 145, net profit about 130. Amazon net was 546. (I like to focus on net rather than sales volume)
Highest Price Sold: $50 pair of women’s shoes on ebay
Average Price Sold: Not sure how you figure this out. On AZ, it would be $19.
Returns: 0 but got a strange message from someone grilling me about the contents of an out of print book. It was very odd.05/14/2017 at 8:06 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 305: The Biggest Transfer of Wealth in Human History #17987I was raised by my aunt and uncle, both who grew up during the depression and they were both big time savers. Even down to stocking the pantry, they had a tonne of canned goods just in case. When I was a kid, we always shopped at thrift stores for clothes. They both taught me the value of money, it’s where my thrifty nature comes from.
05/14/2017 at 7:23 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 305: The Biggest Transfer of Wealth in Human History #17974I cracked up at you guys trolling the pushy wannabe buyer. I admit I was taken in by a similar minded guy a few months ago. I don’t do best offer. I sell at a fair price, not the lowest but affordable. He kept sending me offers to lower the price, so I did because frankly the boots were taking up too much space. He even mentioned I should sell it to him reduced because it wasn’t selling.
Anyway, when he gets them, suddenly there’s a smell so I said send them back. He was hinting that he deserved a partial refund. No way was I giving that guy any more of a discount. I get them back, and you guessed it, no smell. I resold them later on. Next time, I will block and raise the price like you guys did.
05/13/2017 at 1:26 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 309: Scrapping and Parting – Interview w/ Eric in Ottawa Canada #17962Another homeschooler or unschooler as I like to say here. I only have one kid left to teach, the other 3 are done thankfully. My two eldest have gone on to college/post grad but my third child has been bit by the ebay/amazon bug and has no desire to further his education. It’s my own fault for teaching him a side hustle.
There’s a guy in our town that is building a house out of old shipping containers. I was thinking it would be a good storage unit but would have to have some kind of ventilation/cooling system because those things get hot in the summer.
I love this idea. We live in an RV and space is limited to say the least. My husband wants to buy a pop up camper for storage, and I have been on the fence about it. We recently got a delivery from our wholesaler and had nowhere to put it, was a logistical nightmare. I love RV living but storage is the main reason I can’t go too far into ebay selling.
04/28/2017 at 10:16 pm in reply to: Amazon "Just Launched" scams seem to be a widespread epidemic #17237I wouldn’t buy anything from a just launched seller. That’s like buying something from someone on ebay with 0 feedback. I realize this is unfair, I was once a just launched seller too (and Amazon feedback is hard to get) but it seems prudent.
I was watching a youtube video recently that said 60% of Amazon customers browse with the prime filter on. I am guilty of that as well. That means you never see products that are sold merchant fulfilled.
Also hello Jay and Ryanne. I am months behind on the podcast but am listening again and reading old posts.

I am on my phone as well, and noticed the same issue. If you turn your phone long ways, like holding a tablet the formatting issue is fixed.
Nice site, Jay and Ryanne. I am behind on listening to podcasts. We had an issue with the storage locker we were using and am in the process of moving everything, not a fun task. Enjoyed the show, as always.
