Narrow mount, score! What other colors did you end up with?
Simplicio, could you post a photo of the underside of them? If they have the narrow mount configuration instead of the wide, you might even be able to get more than $150 each for them. The newer bases are pretty much all narrow mount, so if someone buys one that’s set up for wide mount, they’ll have to go through the somewhat annoying process of replacing the shock mounts.
I’ve sold posters more consistently than almost anything else on ebay, and not a single one of them has ever been framed. I think it’s less appealing to buyers because they’re not able to frame it how they want, and it also ups shipping costs significantly.
I’m thinking of trying it exclusively as an instagram/local sale experiment. I’m probably going to start with pieces that are somewhat local, but not actually Albany-proper (those will get saved for next year’s sale haha). Probably gonna do test #1 with a set of vintage maps of a local lake (about an hour away) that is a popular destination when folks want to get out of Albany for a day. I figure that’ll hopefully increase the interest from local buyers.
Oh yeah, I definitely wasn’t starting from nothing with instagram. I think before I announced the sale, I had around 1800 followers. Having the sale got me up past 2200 though!
Seeing how eager people were to buy items that were already framed has made me wonder if I should try framing some stuff and selling to local folks on instagram more. I think that might be my next random experiment. Gotta keep trying to figure out ways to offset ebay slowing down during the summer months!
I think the thing that a lot of people are doing now is completely restoring the shells using this tutorial or something similar, and then purchasing brand new bases from one of the many companies that has sprung up offering great quality reproductions of some of the more sought-after original styles of bases.
The stacking bases are probably the most functional ones, but they’re just not the “cool” ones since they were originally marketed to schools, libraries, etc.

Sharyn – The bar didn’t charge me a dime. They actually even opened 2 hours earlier than they usually do on Saturdays, and made a killing during that time. I would even go so far as to say they were grateful! I had around 115 items total.
Inglewood – there were actually a few items that I did kind of reimagine. The most popular was a bunch of coasters from a long-defunct Albany brewery that I encased in resin and sold for $8 a pop! (Originally purchased 30 for $5!). Also, I forgot to mention – I took another kind of large risk. I designed a very Albany-centric neon sign and spent $450 having it produced. I was selling raffle tickets for it during the event for $1 each, and sold a whopping 906 of them!
Mike – I’ve thought about making the local items a store category, but I think that would definitely be detrimental to the event next time. Plus… throwing some early afternoon booze into the mix sure seems to make people more willing to pay a high sticker on some items haha
I picked up a bunch of these a while back. I had NO trouble at all selling the shells for $150 on ebay without the bases. Honestly, nobody wants the stacking bases anyways. If I were you, I’d pull the tables off and sell those separately. You can also pull the glides (little plastic feet) and sell those too.
The shells actually fit perfectly in a 19″ cube box.
Oh I’m definitely in my “working prime” and itching to take the leap to full-time.
It’s especially scary for me though, because I’ve been at my current job for a little over 5 years, but it’s a job that I never would have gotten without an “in.” So, if going full-time doesn’t work out… it’s kind of inevitable that I’d have to re-enter the workforce at a job I don’t like nearly as much. I also work about a quarter of a mile from where I live, which is another perk that would be tough to find again.
I did recently (maybe 6 months ago) take the baby step of convincing my employer to let me go to a 4-day work week, which has been a great decision so far. Being able to completely dedicate every Friday to sourcing/listing has definitely made the idea of doing it full-time seem way more feasible.
Agreed.
It would be nice if, as a seller, I had the option of only approving a return like that if it was for all items purchased in the transaction.
Oh well, at least I still have a sweet trash night chair.
I’m upstate in the sunny, tropical city of Albany!
