Highest Price Sold: $450 Bose Acoustic Wave 6 CD player
Average Price Sold: $50.36
Returns: 0The Bose CD player I found on Offer Up for $60 so no complaints there. Took less than a month to sell. I also sold a 400 capacity CD/DVD player (!!!) for $200 that I paid $80 for. That sold in less than a week. People still love their physical media.

Total Sales: $534.26 ($175 from a local sale through Instagram)
Highest Price Sold: $175 restored vintage Pioneer SX-636 receiver
Average Price Sold: $25.44
Returns: 0The Pioneer receiver was bought off a guy for $40 on Offer Up – it was tobacco stained and only had sound from one channel. I cleaned her up inside and out and got her working again. I posted my progress on Instagram and then when finished I posted a before/after photo on Instagram saying it was for sale and had four offers immediately. I sold to a friend for $175 up the street.
I am going to try this social posting more often with vintage gear – it obviously takes longer than listing clothes, etc, on eBay but I find a lot of joy in fixing up this old gear and since I’m not reselling for a living I can afford the time invested in each piece. And when people buy locally I’m obviously saving on fees, etc.
Here is a photo of the restoration job.

Jan 1 – 7
Total items in store: 292
Sold: 18
Sold an old Stereo Receiver of mine that I no longer use through an easy Facebook post to a friend: $50 cash (so no fees, yay)
Total sales: $246.16Not a huge week in sales but we were traveling all through NYE still and I wasn’t doing much to entice buyers with sales, etc. I had a huge sourcing day on Jan 2nd where I bought a bunch of old audio gear that I need to clean up and list.
Thankfully I sold two higher priced items on Sunday and Monday of this week that already passes the above numbers. I have a Bose CD player that I found on offer up for $60 listed on ebay at $599 and have been dealing with a lot of of lowball offers on it and a few that are getting close. I’m really trying to hold out for at least $500 instead of just taking the quick $400-450 offers that have been coming in. Listening to you guys have made me think I can hold out and get as much as I possible can if I’m just patient. We’ll see!
• Total Items in Store: 289
• Items Sold: 19
• Total Sales $219.07
• Highest Price $108.77 – lot of 96 hair metal cassettes from 80s/early 90sI haven’t had a chance to list as I traveled for two weeks during the holidays but now I’m home and can start listing again. Last night I listed the $60 Bose Acoustic Wave CD player for $599.99 so we’ll see what happens there.
The tapes I sold last week were purchased from someone through the Offer Up app. I paid $20 and put them up for auction starting at $24.99 and a couple of hair metal fans bid them up to $108. Not bad.
Yesterday I purchased a TON of vintage audio gear for next to nothing from a couple downsizing. I got 4 receivers, 3 turntables, a CD player, headphones and two sets of beautiful Sansui speakers from the 70’s. The guy just kept throwing stuff into the pile. I’ll make my money back just selling one set of the speakers which I’ll probably do via Craigslist or through Facebook as shipping those things will be a BEAST. Again, I found this through Offer Up which, along with Let Go, has been a great sourcing tool for me for electronics and gear.
Love the podcast.
Happy new year!

Total Items in Store: 281
Items Sold: 22
Total Sales: $395.64
Highest Price Sold: $156.45 – White Zombie Numero Box Set
Average Price Sold: $17.98This is my first time posting my numbers. I have been lazy keeping track of my COGS but I sell a lot of music (CDs, tapes, records, etc) that I buy in bulk for cheap so I lost track overall. Actually quite a few things I sold this week were just items I no longer use and wanted out of the house.
The White Zombie box set was sitting on my shelf for months and I’ve never listened to it. It was one of 250 “Toxic Waste Green” colored vinyl, ha. I basically broke even after shipping and fees but in my mind I’ll use the money to buy more inventory instead of having some box set sitting on my shelf. As I type this I realize most of you probably think it’s crazy that I paid $130 for a vinyl box set but welcome to life of a record collector. It’s not always pretty.
RE buying up – I sell a lot of vintage audio gear so I’m used to paying $40+ for say, a Pioneer receiver or turntable but I sell a lot of those pieces direct to friends in Nashville or even through facebook/instagram posts where there aren’t any fees. I’ve even started having people ask me to find them gear which is the best kind of transaction cause I can find cheap, clean up and already know I have a buyer! I am salivating over the turntable find posted by another person here. What a score.
Speaking of experiments…When I return from NYE vacation I’m excited to test a recent purchase of mine which was buying a Bose acoustic wave player with a 5 cd changer off a kid on offer up for $60. Turns out they regularly retail $400-600 on ebay. That will be a great way to start 2017!
12/12/2016 at 12:29 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 283: Running Our Businesses Without A Safety Net #7858Hey John – do you sell the electronics quicker on Amazon than eBay? I have a Magnavox DVD/VCR recorder and a Sony 400 capacity DVD/CD player that I scored today cheap.
They sell on ebay but the Amazon sales are higher.
I’m trying to decide which platform to put on and if by going Amazon if I’ll have to sit on the item longer.
Any thoughts?
