I ship large electronics regularly via USPS and FedEx. I use a box with about 2-3 inches of space around the item. I put a plasic bag around the item and pack it in with packing paper on all sides. I have never had a damaged item with this method.

Contractors paper is great for large items, it’s thick and creates a nice cushion around the item. I get mine at Home Depot.
