Hi everyone!
I’m Jay (who is a girl!) & I stumbled upon this forum by sheer accident when looking for more information about Poshmark’s VAs. I read through a large section of this thread & thought I may be able to help answer some of the questions, even though they’re old…
A bit about me: I joined Poshmark in 2015 but I didn’t really do anything with the account until January of 2018. I had listed a couple things but I had a full time job, a new relationship & a movie in post production, so I wasn’t thinking I’d do much.
Fast forward to 2019 & Poshmark is my full time job. I won’t give specifics, but my income for the past week has been just under $5k.
Simply put, yes, it’s clear that I’ve managed to make a business out of the poshmark platform. I’ve tried eBay, but quit after 1 sale. To be fair, my market is in contemporary & premier designer fashion. I’m a former Hollywood stylist so I have a ton of clothes, bags, etc. I also know how to source items so while I have put more money in to creating a business, it’s paid off for me.
The thing with Poshmark is the sharing (yes, it can be boring & time consuming) & having more expertise in the items I’m selling than most is what enables me to charge a premium for my items.
While many people want ‘deals,’ I basically take the position that they’re still getting a ‘deal’ when I’m selling a gently used CHANEL bag (that never goes on sale) for less than retail. I know someone mentioned not being able to sell a $500 rag & Bone jacket for retail, & I have to say, depending on the item, I’ve been able to get retail & higher on items from Henri Bendel & others.
The 20% is a buzzkill & I’m putting the finishing touches on my website in hopes of getting some of my traffic over there & not losing so much. Even so, my items are priced with that 20% in mind. I was patient, built a following & gained a reputation for authentic luxury goods. Between making sure my photos are accurate & using YouTube to show the item as well, I’ve gotten to the point where people pay my prices because I’ve proven they’ll receive quality items, customer service & quick communication.
I have an autoimmune disease which has effected my ability to work in a normal office setting or work regular hours. I work hard, however, it keeps me going in a way that I’m able. It makes me productive & I love that.
You definitely need to find a niche on Poshmark. The social aspect helps a lot. I met one of my best friends via Posh because we traded handbags. Then we just started talking & talk all the time via phone, text, etc. She was on poshmark long before me & was able to give me tips on what to do, not to do, how to handle certain issues & I’ve tried to pay it forward as I connect with newbies.
I am fortunate that a close friend is a management consultant & he’s now helping me with growth. Even so, what I’ve found with poshmark is that people appreciate & as odd as it may sound, crave personalized attention. I think that’s been lost in many market places & the social aspect of poshmark, writing sincere, handwritten thank you notes & showing your personality is part of what drives customers. I can’t do the small dollar sales some do, but I’m actually making more than many & with less work in packing, etc. It isn’t a platform for everyone bc of the social aspect, but for me & my niche, it’s working quite well.
