Thank you, everybody. This was all extremely helpful. Thanks to you, Mike–I’m definitely going to make sure I capture some images to guarantee I can compare in the case of a return.
Cheers!
10/22/2018 at 7:46 am in reply to: Trash Elf Twins Challenge 2018 Thread #3 From Week 31 August #5049923 death pile items listed! I finally did it! I wanted to start participating in this challenge several weeks ago but then a tree fell on my house during Florence. No one injured fortunately but my ebay storage room is pretty much destroyed.
I’m slowly but surely working my way through 26 Rubbermaid totes of my husband’s grandparents’ estate. I have them stashed all over the house now which is stressful but temporary. My goal for this week is 10 items a day, but I’m guessing my 2yo and 4yo might have other ideas. We’ll see how it goes. Good luck to everyone.
08/28/2018 at 5:10 pm in reply to: Trash Elf Twins Challenge 2018 Thread #3 From Week 31 August #48119Hi!! I want to join up. I need motivation to tackle my death pile badly. I recently… I mean a couple of… I mean several months ago brought home a Uhaul filled with 26 Rubbermaid tubs full of my husband’s grandparents’ things. They threw away nothing. The tubs are staring at me in the bonus room. I’m considering putting googly eyes on the front of them to really put the pressure on me.
Do I need to post by a certain time on Monday? And do I just put it here on this thread?
Thanks!

I’m sure someone will buy it. It’s both practical and decorative, and has a cool old world aesthetic. I make pies from scratch and would definitely buy a wooden pastry crimper.
Thanks. I have to admit, I doubted you guys on Ikea hardware and Hymnals. I mean, I believed you, but was skeptical they’d sell for me. I’ve sold both already. And my hardcore evangelical mother in law didn’t even give me a hard time about the Hymnals! Win win.
I found the kit! http://www.ebay.ca/itm/DIMENSIONS-CREWEL-EMBROIDERY-KIT-FANCY-CLOWN-PIERROT-18X22-SEALED-USA-MADE-/401476421529
Turns out it is crewel, such I had always thought was really short, boxy stitches.
Calculated. Wondering if it was just a blip. Seems like others haven’t had issues.
Ok, so now that I’m searching with your wording, it does appear that this is called “long stitch needlepoint”. Thanks so much!
That’s it exactly! It looks like embroidery but uses really long stitches. Maybe I should call it “long stitch embroidery”?
I’m fairly new to auctions, but I have found for me that the best course is to do online bidding or internet absentee bidding. I have two small children and rarely have time to go attend a preview on my own, let alone sit through 6-8 hours of a live auction. You do have to be willing to take some risks buying site unseen, but I’m buying cheap lots anyhow.
I typically look at the online catalog for my two favorite nearby auction houses and make note of items I suspect people won’t bid on. These are almost always towards the end of the catalog and often are things like glass lots, matchbooks, buttons, bathroom/vanity items, etc. I can usually get these lots for $2-15 and sometimes they’re absolutely filled with treasures. I bought a $15 “glass lot” in January that had old German porcelain rose place card holders, Galway Crystal Double Old Fashioned glasses, a 50s petit pointe vanity set, etc. I’ve already made $200 on it and probably could make about $400-500 more.
I agree with the middle of the week thing too. Those seem to be the legitimate auctions. And an added benefit is that as it gets later on a weeknight, fewer people are willing to hang in there and bid on the cheap back lots.
02/11/2018 at 10:37 pm in reply to: Instant Pot Yogurt, it's yum and a fraction of the price of yogurt at the store! #32714I can also attest that this method works very well! This is pretty much exactly how I do it also.
After I made really good yogurt the first time in my instant pot, I sold my old yogurt maker on eBay! So meta.
In case anyone is interested or it helps folks in the future, I did get one opinion on my piece. They believed it to be black amethyst glass and agreed that it was a representation of Kwan Yin and thought it to be a Chinese export. The retail value–because of some damage to the base of the piece–was estimated to be about $300.
Thanks, Postcard Guy. I put it up Buy It Now and overpriced it with Offers Allowed. I’m definitely going to update the title per your guidance. This was very helpful–thank you.
Also, I have to say, I never understood postcard collecting until now. I’m still not a collector of anything, but I totally understand the postcard thing. I’m going to have a hard time parting with a few of them.
Those are great suggestions. Thank you!
So after doing a bit more digging, I think the material is something called “manmade amber.” I don’t actually know what that means and I’m still fairly confused as to whether it’s worth $20 or $200. Considering asking my local auctioneer to take a look.
