Every April I look forward to a huge book sale called 5 Colleges Book Sale that happens in my area. I used to buy lots of books but they are more of a long tail item so starting last year I switched my focus to ephemera and there is a whole room just for that. Last year I sold 90% of the items I bought which is much better than the rate of books bought and sold in any year. I imagine I’ll still pick up some books because I just can’t help myself! If you love book sales, there is a great site called bookfinder that can show sales in your area.
Anyone else have a yearly sale or event that they look forward to each year? -

The library in my town has a once a year book and media sale that ended this past Sunday. They block off an area in the mall with tables upon tables of books plus a table or two of CDs & DVDs. Last year, I bought a set of dictionary/encyclopedia books from 1901 for $20. I resold the books for around $160. This year I bought only two books.
There are also many once-a-year yard sales / flea markets run by different organizations in town as fundraisers. I attend as many of them as I can.
There is a Freecycling event once or twice a year where people can bring stuff they no longer need, and take stuff that they want, for free. Grabbing stuff for resale is not allowed. This year, I’m actually volunteering for the organization that puts it on, and I volunteered to run the event this coming Saturday. At the end of the day, I may take a few leftover items that weren’t taken, but otherwise I won’t collect for resale. I will bring stuff I decided not to sell on eBay.

We also have yearly town wide yard sales that I often sell at as there are alot of people that come to these from outside of the area and plenty of items large and small get sold for good money!

There is an annual book sale where I live that I get shopping carts full of books (mostly for personal use) that I look forward to. Most books are 25 or 50 cents. It’s a charity event for a local women’s shelter.
It takes over an old Big Box store, and it is stacked full of books in banana boxes. It is well organized into categories, but they have so many books you have to dig through box after box.
It goes over a weekend from Friday to Sunday, but they have a $10 pre-sale entry fee on Thursday for hardcore book, music, movie, and board game collectors. I may pay the $10 this year to see if it is worth it. Admission is free on other days.
I never thought about sourcing (I usually buy books for a few dollars on eBay – therefore didn’t think of the market for rare books) but since I’m not a category expert, I may pick up a few strange looking or older books and look them up on my phone.

You should try it! I found non fiction and obscure to be most in demand but you still have to have that right person come looking. I sell in a brick & mortar group shop and actually sell a number of books in that venue. At one time I did sell books on Amazon but they started pushing out the little sellers long before they started doing the shipping for sellers. It was a great venue for books but I couldn’t justify the price of a store, before that it was a fee when you actually sold a book. Oh well times change and now I just sell on eBay. I would pay the $10 for sourcing on Thursday, I love being one of the first to see especially if the books are only 25 or 50 cents! Have fun.
