So I’ve come across a HUGE stash of Mid Century “stuff”. Toys, collectibles lamps, furniture, the works. This appears to have been a cleanout of a house the person is going to flip, so they just want some money for it.
The problem: I know the guy who has it all, he is a dick, and he knows I know he is a dick (because I pretty much told him in more words than that). We used to be neighbors before we moved and he pretty much ruined the neighborhood with his loose dogs.
I’m conflicted as to if I should even contact him with an offer on all this stuff. Even if he would deal with me, do I really want to hand him my cash?Ugh…. why did it have to be this guy?
Anybody else ever find themselves in this situation?

I’ve been in the opposite situation – I had a bunch of home improvement items (essentially everything to kit out a whole bathroom that was never used – toilet, shower stall, vanity, taps, etc) and was contacted by a guy I despised to buy it. I told him no.
I got an offer from someone else online – told the guy to come by to pick it up and it was the same guy!!! He setup a new account to buy the stuff off me. He had the cash, I let it go, and avoid the guy ever since.

It’s all business. How much does he want?

He just puts “best offer gets it” on all his posts. Yeah he’s that kinda guy.
I inquired about a couple things. He’s running a blind auction (like I said, he’s a douche). He has some mid century floor to ceiling lamps I inquired about and his response was “someone has offered $45 for all of them”. So I’ll try and play along and said I’d do $50. He also has a large lot of vintage pink luggage I really want as well. Other than that he has some lots where I’d only want a couple things. If I get something I’ll just ask to look at everything and see if I can pick/choose.
If he comes back and says he’ll wait to see what offers he gets I’ll tell him to pound sand.

I wouldn’t let a neighborly dispute get in the way of making some $$$. If you think he’ll jack up the prices because he doesn’t like you, pay someone/find a friend willing to buy the stuff for you.

Business is business. If the numbers make sense, buy. If they don’t eff him.

Nope. I wouldn’t touch this with a ten foot pole.

Better you than me. I hate dealing with jerks. I have no patience for them and can’t fake a pleasant interaction.
Maybe I could through email but the stuff and the price would have to be really amazing.-

I am with you Antarestar: I run short on dealing with jerks. I don’t get into dialogue but will tell my wife Susan, let’s go, nothing here for us.
Every now and then I will throw in a ‘ boy you have this stuff priced on the high end”, but you can’t fault them for trying. we went to a yard sale amount 2 summers ago. Whole drive way was lined on both sides with roll out shelving and covered with pop up tents. His whole garage walls were lined around the perimeter with shelving. The roll out shelves fit back into his garage in the middle. He had old antique booth tags on everything and still had the prices on everything at list prices. Every time I throw a number out he would say things like, I don’t take low ball offers, or you are way off the mark. I said well you may have the correct price on these for an end use collector who has just got to have this thing but how do you account for resellers or dealers such as yourself that would like to buy from you? His reply.. I have all the time I need to find the right buyer and guess you are just not it.
All I said is and we will never be, good luck and left. He is one of those perpetual yard sellers anyway and this is his version of his own home business. Who knows, maybe he sold online or craigs list also.
I am not a big yard sale pickers anyway. Tons of people always moving around Atlanta, no shortage of Sales, but high end houses or lower end houses, all seem to just be dumping the real junk out of their closests, basements or garages and it all seems to be the same thing. We have found some nice higher end pieces occassionaly but most of the time, it is not worth the time, effort or expense to drive all over creation for greasy, used tupperware and kitchen utensils.

Looks like 2 lots I am getting will cost me $125 but I’ll sell it all for $600-1000+
The third lot has ALOT of promise. Huge lot of vintage board games and toys from the 60’s. Some of them are very desirable. It all depends on if they are moisture damaged or missing parts. There are at least 5 things there that could sell for $100 to $300 if fully complete.

Oh I hate dealing with people like that. Business is business, so if it’s worth it to me I swallow my pride and be as nice as I can be – I think obsequious is the right word – all the while reminding myself that this is worth it because I will come out on top. It is hard to resist using every trick in the book to pull one over on them, though. As far as I’m concerned, anything is fair game and I will tell lies upon lies to gain an advantage.
It’s like the flea market or antique store dealers with no price stickers on anything and if you ask how much an item is and they won’t give you a price, they’ll say “oh that’s like $100 to $150”. Grrrrrr….. So I pull out a $20 bill and do my best to waste their time and annoy them with a persistent low ball offer. See how long it takes before I can get them to lose their temper. Of course I won’t get the item but the entertainment value is priceless.

Well I should have known.
We agreed on a price for two lots and I was coming to look at a bunch of other lots. Agreed on meet and address was given to me for the estate it was all located at. I was bringing plenty o’ cash. All the sudden I see one of the lots I was getting was marked ‘sold’. I messaged him to ask whats up. He says
“I got an offer of $85 on that one. I still have the other lot”. I knew who I was dealing with…and I still gave it a shot. Shame on me.Douchebags never change.
I responded with ” Enjoy your $85 and your complete lack of integrity.” and blocked him.
Oh well. There’s always more stuff.

had someone we used to know well (and who owes us a bunch of money that we will never see) contact me about a TV on craigslist, said he’d buy it. i ignored the email.
i still have the tv sitting here, no buyers. so who is the jerk, him or me? not sure.-
05/11/2019 at 12:57 pm #61688
If he has the money to buy the TV from you, he has the money to pay you back (at least partially).
He can him find a TV somewhere else..
and yes, he’s the Jerk..
