I scored a huge haul – so large it barely fit into my SUV (which takes a LOT) for only $100. Boots, shoes, craft items, jeans, baby toys and nursery items, bedding, cushions. The SUV was crammed full, including behind the seats and so high on the passenger seat I couldn’t see out. It was a short 8 miles home, though, so I wasn’t worried.
While we were loading, I smelled something awful! I figured I must have driven over a pile of poop as I reversed into the yard. When I eventually finished loading and jumped into the car, all doors and windows closed, the odor became overpowering and I realized, with horror, that I hadn’t driven over a pile of dung, I had STEPPED in it!
Hauling ass to the side of the road, I wiped my plush flip flops off on the asphalt as well as I could, then drove home with the windows open and the a/c on full. I wasn’t even halfway home by the time my eyes started watering!
So there I was, loaded to the hilt, driving at 6PM down a winding rural road, with my head out of the window like a dog, tears streaming down my face, and crazed cackling floating in the air behind me to utterly bewilder the longhorns on the side of the road. This time, when my husband asked me “are you bringing more crap into the house?” I could truthfully answer no, I left it outside and hosed it down!

@Amatino! This is hilarious! I swear-this was like a story straight out of Reader’s Digest! Too funny-okay-not for you so much-but for the reader. Thanks for sharing. I hope you make a “crap load” of profit on that haul! Good luck.

I opened this topic expecting sentimentality. Instead, I got sh*t!
Great story! I remember a similar scenario when car pooling some kids home from school back in the day.

I remember when I was in my 20’s and found this awesome recliner sectional sofa on the side of the road. I called up one of my friends to come pick it up in his truck and we dragged it in my 3rd floor apartment that was accessible only by stairs.
Big mistake…after going to bed I woke up in the middle of the night and my apartment stank like urine, I was alone, and couldn’t move the thing. I thought it was just a cushion and removed all I could, but turned out the whole thing stank. Probably a cat marked it over and over…
Luckily, I didn’t throw out my old furniture, but it was a lesson in dragging fabric/cushioned furniture home. Nowadays I’d also be scared of bed bugs.

I picked up an arcade game that was abandoned near railroad tracks. It was a rare game that was complete but very water logged.
Loaded it in the SUV with a buddy and started for home. A couple minutes into the journey we realized just how STANKY that cabinet was in an enclosed environment. We had the windows down and hanging out heads out the window just like you described!
Once I got it home I started taking parts off (outside on the patio – good decision) and discovered rats/mice nests and poop as well as a large any colony up in marquee/speaker area.
I stripped that cabinet of valuable parts then rolled it down the hill to my burn pile to be immediately cleansed by fire.
I did make a couple hundred bucks off all the parts which is a big plus.

Cleaned out an entire basement full of vintage stereo equipment complete with boxes and manuals. Did it pretty fast and didn’t notice until I got home that everything was covered in a layer of cigar smoke. Smell was so bad I had to throw it all out, sans one receiver sitting in my storage unit that will hopefully air out before the heat death of the universe.

LOL. What fun this thread is turning out to be! I’m so glad I’m not the only person dealing with stank! 😀

My most recent stinky experience is a different kind of stink but believe me, it STINKS!
I got a Coach purse at an awesome Church rummage sale where I was the only shopper. I was so excited, I’ve never found a Coach purse before and it was in perfect condition and only $2.00!!! So I bought and put it in my office to list it and wow, suddenly I’m feeling sick and have a horrible headache. And every time I go into my office I get an instant horrible headache. Finally I realize there is a very very heavy musky perfume smell in my office, what is that, and where is that coming from? I don’t wear perfume, I get unscented everything, perfume gives me a headache. Yup, it’s the Coach purse, and boy does it stink!
The purse is now sitting in a sealed tub nestled in a ton of clean kitty litter. I took the listing down before it sold, thank god, but now I’m afraid to open the tub.

I used to knit a lot, and did not realize what a hoard of yarn I had. I started to put it all together and realized I had about 3 totes of almost worthless yarn (pennies on the dollar) and I thought I’d donate it. But to whom? I got on Craigslist “free” section that night and found a lady who wanted to swap fabric for yarn. I sew, so I thought “Well, at least fabric you can get more for your dollar!” so, I e-mailed her and went to sleep. I awoke to an e-mail from her and that weekend we swapped. She stated that she felt she shortchanged me because I gave her more yarn than she gave me fabric, but I assured her I don’t need fabric, and it’s okay! When I got home, I looked at the fabric and immediately smelled cigarette smoke-yuk! But she did give me some beautiful fabric! I can always sprinkle baking soda on the fabric, or if I use it, I can wash with ammonia and the smell will dissipate. For now, the fabric is in the garage in an open box. The smell has subsided, but lingers. I have yet to sprinkle baking soda-but I will!
As an update, we swapped 2 more times (I feel like old friends now) and in one of the swaps, she gave me about 20 quilting rulers, and a ton of other sewing accessories that I can flip on ebay-it’s all in great condition-much of it is new, unused!
