Steve – When you packed that tire, what type of packaging did you use? I have a spare tire (doughnut) that I need to list.
My better sales from last week:
This is my big sale of the week. I saw this antique 10 Volume set – the Century Dictionary & Cyclopedia – at my local library’s yearly book sale for $20. I initially hesitated at buying it, but I was able to come back two days later and it was still there. The negotiated price was $200, but I had to include shipping of about $40.50 because eBay doesn’t have a good way to list with two separate boxes. The total weight was over 70 pounds.

A buyer asked me to combine pants from two different listings, which I agreed to because it was a big enough sale. Five pants sold for $55.

I went late on the last, rainy day to an estate sale two weeks ago, and they priced three packs of Tarot cards for $2. Two sold the day after I listed them, and the last one sold a day or two ago. Here is the highest price one that sold for $28.

Since this wheel also had a sprocket and disc brake rotor on it I had to use styrofoam on top and bottom along with a lot of packing paper wadded up around the tire to fill the space.
Check with UPS, you may be able to ship a donut type wheel with just a tag attached with a wire. I think I’ve seen tires shipped that way.

This week has been really good in terms of volume of sales – so far Sunday-Wednesday I already have 17 sales. However, they’ve all been lower dollar items – 13 of the 17 sales have been less than $30. It’s all good though, at least the eBay faucet hasn’t been turned off!
Here are some of the more interesting things I’ve sold since last Wednesday’s post:
(2) Temple of the Dog Posters & Temple of the Dog Tour T-Shirt
All of these are from the 25th Anniversary concert I went to at Madison Square Garden in November. Most people are familiar with “Hunger Strike“, but Temple of the Dog was a tribute “supergroup” made up of former Mother Love Bone members after their front man Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose in 1990. Mother Love Bone was set to be THE band coming out of Seattle – not Nirvana (who had released their first album Bleach to moderate success), not Pearl Jam (who didn’t even exist yet), etc. Pearl Jam was formed out of former members of Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog was fronted by Chris Cornell, who was Andrew Wood’s roommate in Seattle and in his own up & coming band, Soundgarden (who hadn’t even released their first album, Badmotorfinger, yet). Brief history on how important this time was in the history of music/rock and the anniversary show was the first time they ever toured together – and that’s why I bought the extra merch for resale… I did not expect Chris to pass this soon and in no way shape or form wanted to take advantage of his death, but all of these sold over night as the news broke (posters for $100 each and the t-shirt for $75). These were actually my mom’s from the 60s. She had three that she gave me to sell. Cute little items that you can put on a vanity, bathroom counter, dresser, etc to hold perfumes of other decorative items. I’ve had these listed for over 2 years with absolutely no interest or offers even through sale periods. All three sold to three different buyers within 24hrs for $20 each. Not sure if they were featured in a show or if there was a blog that wrote about them, or whatever, but glad to move them.c2007 Johnnie Walker Blue Label Wooden Bottle Chest
Johnnie Walker Blue Label, for those that don’t know, is a premium scotch brand – usually costs about $175 per bottle. During the holidays, they have special gift packaging. This one was from 2007-08 based on the tag on the bottom. Got it at an estate sale about 2 weeks ago on the last day when they were having people “fill up a bag”. Paid no more than $1 for it. Sold quickly for $30.-
BRIAN TREASURES: Sounds like you could give some good lessons on vintage bands to look for. I am so old (I graduated high school in 1974, oh yup), I haven’t a clue of the grunge bands and later rock. I would say that tshirts and other things from the early days of these bands might sell for more. I’ve heard there are ways to spot older tshirts for example, by the type of stitching at the collar and hems. Are there particular bands you look out for, other than what you’ve mentioned here? Do you have any other guidelines?

Sure, if you find the real vintage stuff from late 80s/early 90s, we’re talking hundreds of dollars.

Also, I use RN/CN guidelines to help determine age. It’s not a perfect system, but should give you a ballpark of true vintage vs. reproduction.

Yeah the whole Chris Cornell thing has sort of upset me–I was living in Seattle in ’92, but at 34 I thought that I was too old to go to concerts, LOL, but I listened to the music, although I wasn’t as much a Soundgarden fan as the other groups, I have been listening to a ton of stuff since he died and so much of it is great…so sad.

You’re killin’ me, omfug. I’m 34 and LOVE going to rock concerts, I’m glad I don’t think I’m too old. I went to see The Pixies this month and most of those people were older than me! I did Riot Fest last year as well and got to see The Misfits reunited, along with Jane’s Addiction, Ween, and others.
I was VERY sad about Chris Cornell. I still have an unopened Alternative Press magazine that was sent to me in 99 with Chris on the cover of it (I ended up with two copies at the time), and I’m too nostalgic to sell it.

Thanks, Steve. I also had a good turn around on a vintage airplane kit (Cox Airtronics) I got at a garage sale for $15 and sold for over $200.

My highest sale of the week goes to this new Hargrave brand forged steel 10-inch c-clamp. I picked this up, along with a lot of other brand new tool items, at a liquidation auction of a hardware store. Everything was going for sky high, so my profit could have been a little better on this. I paid $10, and I sold it for $60. No best offer, they just bought it straight out. That always makes me happy.
New Hargrave C-ClampHere’s something I’ve learned that sells. Vintage spray paint cans. Some brands are worth more than others. Do some research and you’ll immediately know what to look out for. They don’t even necessarily have to be full. I picked this up, along with a whole box full of others, for $7 at an auction. For items that I don’t have a lot of knowledge of, I may start out with an auction style listing. Out of all of the cans I listed, this is the only one that got a bid. Sold it for my opening bid of $15.
Illinois Bronze Spray Paint CanThis is one of the older items in my store. It’s an old Rodale desk Lamp. I didn’t think I would ever sell it. It was kind of loose at the hood and it had some marks and wear, but it still worked. I priced it at what I thought was a good price, but after a while I decided to take whatever offer was given. Someone offered $30 and I gladly accepted it. I think I only paid $1.50 so it was a good deal.

I bought the whole set for $55, but realized upon bringing it home that it was all beat up and unsellable as a whole. So I parted it out. So far, I’ve made $83 from the parts. I’ll come out with more than what I expected the toy as a whole would sell for, but the pieces are moving very slowly. This wheel axle sold for $10.

I sold two Vintage glassware items for $50 each. I listed them at different times and they both sold very quickly to two different people. Did I miss something. I am happy with the sales, but I’m wondering if I left money on the table… Any ideas?
