I’m melting! My MacBook Pro is at the beginning of the end. I’m seeing too many signs. So, my question is, does anyone have any tips for buying a used MacBook Pro? I know Ryanne and Jay always buy used computers, but I’m sure they know what they are doing. I am tech savvy, (air quotes), however, I am mortified of buying a box of bricks, or buying a lemon (if that is a thing within computers). I may just bite the bullet and get a new one. I think I would feel safer-and having the warranty helps. I just wanted to know from those of you who have purchased a pre-owned computer what the pros/cons or any caveats. Thanks.

If you’re going to buy new, the refurbished/clearance section of the apple store website offers macbooks for at least $200 off. They look brand new, have mainly just been opened and straight returned to apple laptops that have had the os reinstalled. They look brand new out of the box, no signs of wear or prior use. A one-year warranty comes with them, but you can also purchase apple care like you would for a brand new laptop.
For a used computer, I would go with a refurb computer store that has a limited warranty and good reviews. Either in person or a shop on Ebay. Just look at reviews, number of computers sold, feedback, etc,. I would also be hesitant to buy directly from an unknown person, but it usually works out fine in the end. I would hope if anything went wrong, ebay buyer protection would have your back.
I would also suggest if you have a Facebook account posting to see if any friends (real-life) are selling their old macbooks. That or any other social media account people you know are on, there are a million these days. At least if you bought from a friend, you could trust that the item you get is legit.

Came across a business in Derby (UK) that replaces the hard disc in MacBooks with solid state discs- you might find a firm near you that does this (or do it yourself!). That is said to speed up the Mac. The other thing appears to be dust in the fans- these are apparently easy to pull out and clean.
I’ve got a MacBook Pro from about 2011. It had a problem with the fans running fast; turned out to be a “Mac Cleaner” that had installed itself. Has a MagSafe 1 with the usual frayed connection, to the point where it’s wired up using a terminal block right near the plug. Wish I’d taped the damn thing up. Going to bodge it up with a new lead and plug- getting into the transformer and soldering the connections is beyond me, so I’m going to join the two leads together.
