This is being advertised as a oxen cart wheel. I found one like it one ebay that they are calling a pulley wheel. I am interested in buying it, just trying to figure out what it actually was used for. It is 30″ in diameter and very heavy. Any thoughts? thanks!

Also – do you think it is really old or just made to look that way?

Is it flat on both sides, and is that hole way off center?

It looks old, but could just be an old piece of wood. Like Rick said, it’s weird that the hole is so off center so doubtful its a wheel.
Do people buy these things on eBay?

Rick – I’m pretty sure the hole is centered in the middle. I don’t think it is flat – it looks like it bulges out on the sides, but is thinner on the edges – which makes me doubt it was used for a cart. This auction site doesn’t always take the greatest pictures and I don’t have time to go check it out in person.
I am leaning towards passing on it. The more I look at it, the more I think it looks like it is just made to look old.

Jay – I think the hole is centered. I think they just took the photo from above and it makes it look off-centered.
Yes, if it were a real antique primitive wheel – it would be worth some money.
The wood just doesn’t quite look right to me. It sort of looks like it was bleached or fake-weathered. The patina for a real antique wood seems off. I could be totally wrong though!?

This is the only listing on ebay I could find that looks like it. They are saying theirs is a pulley wheel. I would think for it to be a pulley – it would need a groove on the edges?

Remember to search SOLDS:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&_nkw=antique+wooden+pulley+wheel&_sop=16Active listings arent a good measure because there are some sellers who always ask too much (sometimes its us!)

If its cheap, its always worth the risk. If you can go see it in person, then that would answer a lot of questions. Tough to know based on a single bad photo.

I just did a Google Reverse Search and at the bottom was the auction. I checked and saw that they have a phone number listed. You may want to simply call and ask. I can’t imagine that an auction is going to be held without having names for each item in the auction.

Jay – I did check the solds, couldn’t find anything like it. Lots of old wheels, but nothing quite like this.
I was mostly hoping someone might know what this type of wheel was used for. It is an unusual design and I was hoping someone had seen it before.
(& yes, I would over-price it myself – I learned from the best 😉 )
thanks!

Adventuree – No reason to call them – they don’t know what it is either 😉
The seller is claiming that it is a 16th Century Oxen cart wheel. & maybe it is. I have no idea!
I was just hoping someone on here would have a better idea of what it is for sure.

To me it looks like a mill stone, that would be used to grind wheat, for example. I found some similar, not the same, on Alamy. (Photos, not stones.)
On this Wiki page they call it a quern stone.

Hi Amtino – That has the right look, but not sure if they made them of wood.
I really appreciate everyone’s input. I have decided to pass on the listing. I am leaning more and more to it being a decorative reproduction – just made to look old.

Ryanne – crap, you might be right – that does look like it.
Thing is… the pics on google look OLD – like really beat up. This one just doesn’t quite have that authentic look. I can’t help but think it was just made to look old.
Its already over $25 and they have a reserve on it, so I think I’m too chicken to risk it.

I am totally blown away by your researching skills. I looked for quite a while & found nothing & you took, what – 2 minutes? amazing.

yeah it could very well be a reproduction. we have dudes in our county who re-make old horse carts and wagons for the heritage fair. so it might just be something like that. it’s still a cool handmade object, but might not be antique or ancient.

It sold for $42 w/out reserve being met.
I’m hoping it will still be there when I go to pick up the items I won – I still want to check it out!

Plausible to me it’s one side of an antique reel (for e.g., large wire or rope). However, typically those are not made from a single piece of wood, at least not these days.

I would say someone would definitely buy this as a decorator piece. I can’t tell you what it is, though.

I agree – I think it would look nice on a mantle. I was able to look at it yesterday & it was HUGE. I’m glad it didn’t work out – that would have been such a pain to pack!
