I purchased two framed photos at auction last week. This particular one is rather strange because of the haircut on the wife and the hat on the child. The hat looks Asian, but the family looks Caucasian. I’m not sure that the photo is actually antique, but the time period is. The framing is at least vintage.
Does anyone have an idea of the time period and culture this photo might be from? For some reason, I thought that maybe someone had posted a similar photo on the forum, but I couldn’t find anything in a search.
Any help is appreciated. I could just list it as an antique strange family photo, or something like that.

The photo looks to be from around the turn of the 20th century, so probably 1900-1910-ish. I wouldn’t put it much past that date, based on the way the lady is dressed and the man’s shirt collar.
As for the boy’s hat, no idea!
Do you have any information about where this photo came from? If it came from an estate auction, do you know the name of the deceased? If you know the last name of the family, you might be able to find an obituary and piece together what nationality the family was.

Liz – Thanks for your help. I agree with the suggested time period, but the hair style and the hat threw me off.
I bought this at a live auction, so I have no idea about its origins. At the auction, each customer is identified with a number. Other than what is on the table with the same number, I don’t have any information about the previous owner.
I did get two framed photos together, and the other one is a girl in a confirmation outfit. I’m assuming that the time period is about the same as the other photo. You can check it out here:

This kid is too young for confirmation. More like “First Holy Communion” age.

The hairstyle looks like a Gibson girl hairstyle popular in the late 1800s. To me the woman and the boy look non white. The frame looks a lot newer than the photo.

So, late 1800s to early 1900s – sounds like we are all in the same era. I read up on the Gibson girl hair style and added that to the title.
Yes, the frame is vintage, but not as old as the era of the photo. I put that in the description. I’m assuming that the photo is not original, but I don’t know. My thought is that the previous owner had a copy made. Because the frame is closed up with older nails, I don’t want to open it.
Here is the listing. Any suggestions?

I’d be sorely tempted to take it apart to see if there was anything written on it. I’d put your parcel select shipping as your first shipping option.

Maybe Christian Missionaries spreading the Gospel to the “heathen Chinese” at the turn of the century?

Just a guess, but their mix of European and Asian features makes me think they came from some part of Russia. I looked at some photos of Russian immigrants, but the closest thing I found to that boy’s beret was the photo near the bottom of this page https://billmoyers.com/2014/07/18/child-migrants-have-been-coming-to-america-alone-since-ellis-island/

Wow – this is all great information. I have no idea on the Russian connection, but the hat definitely matches the photos in that article. Part of Russia is near Mongolia, and I can see the resemblance. I’m not sure how I can add that to the listing, but I’ll work on that tomorrow.
I changed the description of the other framed photo to read 1st Holy Communion instead of confirmation. Being Jewish, I just guessed at the event. Thanks for the correction!
