I made this video a while back to over simplify 2 main things that made a huge difference in our sales. These 2 things made the difference between selling $800 a month to $800 a week.
I am not implying this is the most ideal way or that it even applies to what is going on in your hood. The average item we sell can cost us be between $5-$12. If things we’re only .25 cents or a dollar than I would have a lot more money to buy more (cheaper) things. I spend more per item so I need to get those dollars back faster and for more money.
I’d love to hear about some things that were a game changer in your sales.

I have never heard or thought of checking #sold vs #selling – great tip, thanks! I have been slowly training myself to pass on items that will sell for less than $30, and it’s definitely resulted in increased profits. But since it’s not always practical/possible to do ebay lookups while scavenging, I still end up with some lower value items, which mostly I’ve been trying to sell anyway. That may be a mistake, I don’t know.

I always just look at what sells. And then hope for the best!I never thought to compare how many are available on eBay vs how many have sold.

You’re giving me hope. I can’t seem to even make a decent living with over 800 items listed! I’m doing something wrong. Selling all kinds of cheap junk and being too tight to pay for higher qualit stuff probably has a lot to do with it…

Congrats on quadrupling your sales without quadrupling the size of your store. That’s amazing. Thanks for sharing your tips. Great advice and fairly simple to follow.
I might suggest using the “eValuator” app rather than the eBay app. This app searches sold/completed items only. In addition to showing you sold items, it divides everything up between auction and buy it now and shows you the average price sold and the percentage of items that sold (indicating demand). You can also differentiate between new and used and also pick the most relevant category for your search. It is so much faster than the eBay app and has exactly the info I need as a seller. And it’s free. I look up almost everything using this app before I make a purchase.

Great tip! When I first started I did this. Back then I was mainly selling vintage toys and electronics. Another way to look at it is to look at the completed listings as a heat map. Unsold listings are red, sold listings are green. If you do a quick scroll down through completed listings you should see a lot of green. If not, then the item is not selling well and you should probably pass. If you see a lot of green and there are only a few active listings, then you could be pretty certain the item will sell within a month.
Since I’m growing my store and I’ve adopted the list and forget philosophy, I don’t do this much anymore. I mainly check to see if there is a market. If there is any type of market, then I know I am likely to sell the item within a year.

Question AK:.
We use the Evaluator mentioned above. It shows us everything that you spell out. Except we also have to use other methods when we buy things that may not have been listed and or sold on Ebay for a very long time.But our question is, with a Premium level store whereby we get 1,000 listings, and we have about 680 items currently listed. Any reason to dump so many lower priced items all at once?
Out of the 688 items we have listed 350 are all priced over $25 each. Then we have 283 items between $12.50 and $24.99. Then the balance of approx. 117 items are all under $12.00.
So until we need the space and get about another 250 items listed, pushing us close to the 1,000 mark, isn’t it quicker for now just to leave those several hundred items in the store because we don’t need the room and maybe some will sell and help us out somewhat until we are ready maybe mid summer to do a purge?
Our current unit price avg. at this point of our inventory is $8 to $9 per item and we try to list for approx. 6.7 to 7 times and even more often 10 times or higher when we feel they will sell and even higher still when we find out the actual sold prices from some of our databases.
So we have been on the path you suggest for the last year or so, but don’t totally understand why the urgency to dump everything under the minimum threshold all at once?
But thanks for validating the direction and process we have been moving. We too came to this conclusion by piecing together some of Jay’s comments over the past months.

I could see dumping the low price inventory as a motivational tool to keep you on task. I cannot think of a more direct way to say “We’re NOT doing low priced items any more!” than that.
Sometimes you have to take drastic action to force yourself into a new process.

I thought this was so cool that someone else discovered this and made an educational video on it.
Using this method gives you the power to know (not guess) what to pick and how much to list it for.

Thanks for the tips but using my driod with Sold and Completed refined in the App it shows me how many are sold but not total for sale do you need to toggle between Sold’s and Completeds to get the magic number?
Am i missing a refinement in the app?
