So I shipped a $180 item on Grailed (clothing selling website). It was sent to an apartment in New York, New York. Tracking shows it wasn’t delivered but the buyer says they did not receive it. The sent me a message 2 hours ago and then immediately opened up a paypal case for item not received
I want to add that I think its highly unlikely the buyer is a scammer. They seem like a collector and a pretty wealthy money-wise (I googled their name and address). They also have a lot of purchases on the website and good feedback
I told them to contact their local post office and see what they say and they said this:
“I just got back from the post office, spent an hour there trying to figure it out. They said maybe it was delivered to a different address”
I’m not sure what else to do at this point. Has anybody had trouble with deliveries not arriving due to COVID or tracking showing delivered when it wasn’t?

so the tracking says delivered? (not sure if this was a typo saying it’s not delivered)

How many days has it been? I’ve had cases where item was shown as delivered but it doesn’t actually get delivered for another day or two. I think if the mail carrier has their scanner set incorrectly this can happen. When I’ve had this happen in the past I always ask the buyer to wait a day or two after it initially says delivered. If it says delivered, eBay sides with the seller but I’m not sure how Paypal specifically will deal with it.

that’s a good point, i’ve had this happen while staying in NYC as a matter of fact. i got a delivered message and the item showed up the next day.

also, just as a note of fact: if your tracking says it’s delivered, paypal will back you up on that, so you should enter the tracking number into the paypal case as your evidence.

Tracking does say delivered, I did what you said Julie and told them to give it a day or two and they seemed to be understanding (other than opening up a Paypal case). Tracking shows it was delivered yesterday

If tracking says delivered, then you’re covered. You can be sympathetic, but its now between the buyer and USPS.

For some odd reason, my post office does this. I will order an item online, I will get a notification that the item has been delivered to me and I won’t get it. When I went to the post office, they assured me that it was going to be delivered the next day and stated that the mail carrier just marks it “delivered” because it arrived at the post office. Not the same as “delivered” to the purchaser. When I asked the post office why they would do that, they just said, “it depends on the mail carrier”.

It happens to me also occasionally but most frequently around the fiscal year end. It appears to be done to pad their service record for on-time deliveries at the local level. I asked my carrier about it once and she said it was the manager; that he was going around the office and scanning everything delivered “to save time”.

Thanks for your help guys. I added the tracking and then called Paypal today. The rep was really helpful and immediately closed the case in my favor, I don’t think I had to talk to them for more than a few minutes. Way easier than I thought it would be
