So I live in Maryland and we have stay at home orders starting tonight at 8pm. My post office has informed me that if I bring in packages, they will report me to the police for non essential travel. Any one else dealing with this?

??? That’s insane! The post office is considered “essential” – why would they be essential if they have nothing to ship?
Did you ask about parcel pick up?

Why are they even open then?
In CA the PO’s are open and I dropped off packages, but try to avoid the windows by putting the postage on myself. We have been under similar lockdown to only essential travel for several weeks now. Don’t know if MD is different or more strict however.
Sounds more like a rumor to me. There are tons of those these days that are just plain wrong.

They said that while they are an essential business, my travel to the post office is not.

Let’s think about that. That would mean that anyone’s travel to the post office is not essential business. Therefore no one should go there. Then why are they open?
My post office is open and I go nearly everyday. Nothing like this has ever been said. I think they should be reported. Call your post master and ask if they are spreading bad information. It sounds to me like the employees just don’t want anyone to come in, so they are saying that. Really, what they are saying makes absolutely so sense, it is non-sense.

First I’ve heard of that. My county here in PA is now under a Stay At Home order, so I guess I’ll find out what my local post office says next time I drop off packages. I think you ran into a very misinformed postal clerk, but keep us posted and best of luck….

Keep us posted. I’m in NC. Our lockdown just started tonight until May.
I will be dropping packages off tomorrow.

We have the stay at home order but it hasn’t applied to grocery, drug stores – there is a list, and post offices are open and normal ( though mine just installed plexiglass screens and 6 foot tape marks!)
Using the eBay pre-printed labels makes it super simple, there are so many ebayers and the clerks know everyone so that you can often drop the boxes without standing in line anyway.
Also dropped off a large package at FedEx this weekend, no issues.
Everyone working a service job now has got to be stressed out of their minds.
Also putting hanging packages in plastic bags on the mail box, the carrier picks them up , no appointment , nothing huge though.
Weird going out these days!

What??? I’ve been able to bring mail into the post office daily in NYC with no problems. Why would the post office remain open there with no customers? This makes no sense.

My post office was happy to see me as recently as yesterday.
I think your clerk is misinterpreting Hogan’s executive order. It does not prohibit “traveling to and from a federal, State, or local government building for a necessary purpose.” It also allows staff and owners of Non-Essential Businesses to travel “to and from customers for the purpose of delivering goods.” Non-Essential Businesses have to be closed to the general public but staff and owners may perform “Minimal Operations” including “picking up mail” and retail businesses can continue to sell products on a “delivery basis.”
Of course you don’t want to risk getting arrested by testing a police officer’s interpretation in person, though, if the clerk follows through on their threat.
There are major differences between the stay-at-home orders in different states.

My mail box is about 100 feet from my front door. Leaving my packages by the mailbox for pick up would result in theft. But the solution has been so easy, I just request a pick up from the post office and I leave the packages by my front door. There is a request link on Pirate Ship (pick ups are free). I believe Jay posted the free direct like somewhere else on this forum.
Remember just because a stressed out postal clerks tells you something, doesn’t mean it’s true. But why go to the post office if you don’t have to?

This post makes me so angry. That post office employee does not get to decide what is and is not essential. Having lived in MD for 7 years, I’m not surprised. That area of the country had the most cantankerous postal employees, in my experience. Please update us after you go up the chain.

I was able to go the my storage unit and post office with no issues. We (NC) are on a statewide lockdown. There was even a police officer mailing something at the counter. We exchanged “how you doing” head nods. No issues.
I have extended my handling time to 2 days. I’m going to ship Monday, Wednesday, Friday for now. Maybe twice a week in the weeks to come out of respect for the postal employees’ safety.

I’ve decided not to chance it with my post office as they seemed pretty serious about the police thing. I’ve scheduled my first porch pickup for tomorrow. And to answer @debitsandcredits question, I’m a long time seller and I do not want to risk my metrics by trusting my postal carrier to scan on time. I can’t even get her to deliver the right mail to my home.

My county here in PA was put under a Stay At Home order yesterday, but my postmaster smiled and took my package today. These are stressful times for everyone, including postal employees, and I suspect your clerk was simply misinformed. Of course, if scheduled pick up works for you, I’d stick with that, but if not, I’d try going up the supervisory chain at your local PO.

Atomic Star– you may not have to worry as much about your postal carrier scanning during this time since eBay posted “Seller Protections: We want to reassure you that you will not be penalized for being unable to get an item out the door as fast as usual or if you have to unexpectedly cancel an order. To this end, Seller Performance Standards will not be negatively impacted for the next 90 days. For more on this topic, check the announcement board where we post frequently.” as part of their announcement https://community.ebay.com/t5/Announcements/Helping-each-other-through-COVID-19-in-ways-that-matter-the-most/ba-p/30787142
It still would be best if postal carriers scan at pick up but it seems as if there is a more protection than usual.

Its total nonsense, the employee just doesn’t know what they are talking about. Unless the Maryland order is suspending the constitution and declaring martial law, the person is wrong.
My county in California has been under one of the strictest Public Health Shelter in Place Orders possible by law in the nation, and was done earlier than anyone else– it is technically a misdemeanor to break the terms of the order (although law enforcement are not enforcing it at this time it is voluntary)–we are allowed to go anywhere that is open for business. We go to the post office 2-3 times a week. Law enforcement is only concerned with businesses trying to stay open against the orders of the county, not individuals.

Update! My postal lady came and picked up all of the packages. I chatted with her (while 6 feet apart) and told her this would be the new norm until things settle down and she was more than fine with it. Now to see if these actually scan on time.

Although your customers might be confused if they’re not scanned on time, eBay says they’re wiping out any defects given the various stay-at-home orders. You can’t go down in standing – only up.
04/02/2020 at 7:38 am #75756Retro Treasures WVParticipant
They’re not wiping them out, they’re just not downgrading your rating for 2 months. Your rating is based on 12 months of data, so if you get a ton of defects you’ll be hosed in month 3 and for the forseeable future.
04/01/2020 at 5:03 pm #75737
I would love to do pick ups, but my postal worker comes at 4:45 usually. Not enough to take them to be the post office if he doesn’t get them.
Good to know they are forgiving defects though 🤔

I got hosed pretty bad. Several pickups at 2pm were not scanned in until the next day. Saturdays pickup wasn’t scanned in until Tuesday AM for some reason and I had about 8 packages listed as late shipment. I was doing every other day pickup, but now they can come every day. I hope that’s enough. If anyone orders by 1pm , it is picked up at 2pm.
