Hello from another Virginia seller – I am also at the foot of the Blue Ridge mountains but way north of you guys! I have been selling on Ebay for about 2 years. Books are my niche, although I sell other random items that I find at yard sales or in dumpsters.
I love your podcasts and wonder how you find the time to do all the interesting things that you do. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and providing a means for us to connect in this way.

Welcome Theresa. Do you only sell books on eBay? Or are you selling on Amazon?

I tried Amazon and got overwhelmed by how different it was from Ebay, so never followed through. After listening to you all talk about your experience with Amazaon, I decided not to pursue it further. I am more interested in quality than quantity.

We’re moving away from FBA, but still like finding and selling books.
Do you find that long tail books sell well on eBay?
Do you mind sharing some numbers with us?
How many books do you have listed?
How many do yo sell each month?

I have about 500 items in my store and make about $1000 per month, although that doubled before Christmas. I would like some better way to track my numbers that guess-timating. How do you all know your exact number of items sold, costs and profits short of adding it all up by hand?
I sell very few single books. I may list a single book if it is rare or special in some way. Mostly I accumulate books by certain authors or on certain subjects until I have a big enough set to list in a lot. Otherwise, it is too much work for too little money.
What is a long tail book?

–We just go to My-eBay page and sort our sales at the end of each week. You can see how many items sold and a total. We also use GoDaddy Bookkeeping which breaks down all our sales.
–That’s smart to only sell book lots. You do pretty well if you’re making $1000 a month.
–“long tail” just means that most of our items are not popular. They are on the end of the graph of popularity. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/long-tail.asp

I have GoDaddy Bookkeeping too, but I am months behind logging my inventory purchases in. And I don’t feel like it accurately reflects my profit because every time I run an errand and also pick something up at a thrift store, I log my mileage and meals out – which I would be spending anyway – that comes off an expense.
Can you walk me through how you sort your weekly sales on Ebay to get the number of items sold and total? And how do you come up with the cost of your items sold? Do you a make of note somewhere on your listing somehow?

As I wrote earlier, go to your “My ebay” page when you’re logged in. Go to your sold items. sort by the week or month. That’s where the info is.
Cost of Goods sold is done on a spreadsheet. Keep track of items as you buy your items.
How are you doing taxes? These are all numbers you would need to fill our your taxes.

Good grief – this is the first time I ever found a category called SOLD and sorted them. I see that have sold 90 items in the past 31 days. On my Ebay Seller Hub it says that I had $2,164.29 in sales over the past 31 days, but this does not take into account what I spent on Shipping, Ebay and Paypal fees, and cost of inventory – so I don’t really know my profit.
I did my own taxes with Turbo Tax last year and it was a nightmare.
Are you saying that you have another spreadsheet separate from GoDaddy where you record every single inventory item that you buy?

DOH! I just found this info lower down on the Ebay Seller Hub – somehow I never noticed it before!!!!
SELLING COSTS
Total sales $2,164.29
eBay fees($186.26)
Listing fees($0.00)
Final value fees($192.53)
Subscription fees($59.95)
Fee credits$0.99
Discounts$65.23
Shipping labels*($495.04)
PayPal fees($91.31)
Net sales $1,391.68It says that my net selling costs were $776 or 36% of total sales.
So, I am still missing my initial inventory investment, but I think my original guesstimate of about $1000 profit seems to be in the ballpark.
