Several times the past few days when looking at solds for various items, I come across this message when I click through to an individual sold item:
“The listing you’re looking for is no longer available. Check out this similar item we found for you.”
This text is in a blue bar at the top of a page which displays some other similar(-ish) item that is still up for sale. You don’t seem to be able to see the full original listing for the sold item you’ve tried to click on. It’s not consistent…there are other items on the sold page that I am able to see when I click through. Maybe 40-50% are this way. Also, these are not older solds – they are within the past week or two.
Most recently this happened to me with Coach purses, but it’s been other things, too.
Anyone else had this experience? Has this always been a thing and I’ve just never come across it until now?

I haven;t seen this yet. The next time you find one of these sold listings, put a link here so we can see the experience.

I have seen something like this in the past week or two. I’ve not run into it before. I’ve also found the situation where I click on a listing and I see something else, no message about it being no longer available. I’ll try to post an example if I find one.

Sharon, I ran into the second situation mentioned last night. There’s a local seller I follow and I was checking her solds for the past week. When I clicked on the sold listing, there were photos of something else showing. Sometimes when I clicked, it even showed me a current listing from an entirely different seller. Weird.

Yes, this is a new issue. If you click on the blue word “listing” it will take you to the ended listing you are actually looking for. It’s a PITA.

Yes, this has been my experience lately also. And sometimes the “similar item” is not even close to what you were actually looking for. I assume it’s eBay thinking you want to buy something that is no longer for sale and they are helping you by switching you to something that is currently for sale. Clicking the word listing (in blue) at the top will take you to the listing you actually wanted to see. It’s an extra step and a PITA when doing research.

Thanks for the tip. This has been happening to me too!

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I hadn’t noticed that “listing” was a link…that’s helpful information.
Here is an example FYI. If you click on the word listing at the top in the blue banner, you’re taken to the actual sold that was originally clicked on.

Yes, it is cleaner to link to “LISTING” but it took me a few hours to figure this out. 🙂 I wish this was in seller update/ update. Oh well, thank goodness for the forums.

This is one of the better strategies ebay is using. I believe it is called cross selling. It’s good for ebay as a marketplace and for sellers.

I think this might be one of those situations where ebay’s right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing…
I’m guessing the “buyer team” developed this as a way to increase conversions. And it makes sense….if the item has sold or ended (and not been relisted), show a similar active item instead, so the buyer is shown something she CAN buy.
But the buyer team, of course, is not thinking in seller terms. Sellers relate to the ended/sold item as a research tool, and therefore we want it front and center.
(And don’t forget, even the “seller team” might not recognize the importance of the solds, because many of them likely think like commodity sellers, who actually use ebay’s “pricing guidance” and “trending prices”, so have no big need to do the sort of research we scavenger type sellers thrive on.

Oh, and I agree—-this should have been announced. We sellers spend so much time just trying to figure out these unannounced changes….Jay’s change log idea should be instituted by ebay ASAP
