So I started selling on Ebay again this past November (I used to sell a good bit in the early 2000’s but got out of it many years ago). Obviously, there’s been some changes on there since then. I had been putting off opening a store because up until now I’ve only kept 50 or 60 items listed. I work a normal 40+ hr a week day job, have a 6 month old, and another bun in the oven, so needless to say free time isn’t plentiful. My sales average out to $30+ for Auctions and $35+ for Fixed Price (I only do hot items on auction that I feel like will be bid on by multiple people). I felt like I was paying a lot in final sale fees etc, but I was pretty hesitant about signing up for a store because I’d read so much negative stuff on the net that people’s sales tanked immediately after they opened up their store. I figured I’d do a month or two trial run and see what happened. I opened my basic store a couple days ago and I’ve already broke my record for sales within a 24 hr period. Now if I can just find the time to start listing all this inventory that I’m sitting on!
What’s your take on stores? Did you notice an increase? Decrease? Any opinion on the matter? I wonder

My sales increased when I opened my store last year, BUT when I opened the store, I went pretty hard at listing. I would speculate that the increase in sales was due to the increased inventory, and not to either having or not having a store.

Just curious: what is the hypothesis that opening a store lowers your sales? It sounds completely illogical. Why would eBay want store subscribers to make less money?
We’ve had a store subscription since 2008. We have bought and renovated three houses with the money we’ve made on eBay. Not saying this to brag but to demonstrate that sales happen because we list list list, not because we’ve outsmarted the system.

I totally agree, it doesn’t make sense to me…but the theory I’ve read (more than once), is they put new sellers listings higher up in results to hook them in and gain a new customer. Again, I don’t believe it and I’m glad I did go with a store because I think it’s going to be the best choice in the long run. Gotta be careful reading a bunch of strangers opinions on the information superhighway. Some people just love to be negative and think everyone is out to get them.

The people who come up with these kooky hypotheses never offer up a better way to sell on eBay. If their theories are true, then they should have a streamlined process where their items sell on eBay. They should be really successful if they have this special understanding of eBay’s search algorithm.
Instead, these kind of grumpy sellers come up with complicated reasons why they don’t sell on eBay. The conspiracy theories are excuses to cover up their own inability to run a successful eBay store. “Its all rigged so why bother!”
This is cool because it’s less competition for us.

Yep, that’s right! I wonder how many of these people are sellers listing made in China crap trinkets, super cheap common clothing brands, etc. for too much. Don’t get me wrong, anything can sell (and does) but if you think you’re listing a zillion used super common clothes and expecting it to sell like hotcakes, you might have another thing coming. Got quality/unique/hot stuff…it’ll sell!

Wow I’ve never heard that one before. I sold on eBay for a couple years without a store subscription and then about a year ago I got one and I honestly didn’t see any change in my sales one way or the other. For me paying for the store was not so much about the “store” part as it was a financial decision because you get a discount on listings when you pay for a store subscription.

You can find a plethora of sources on the internet that will complain about literally anything. Creating a store does not kill your sales. If you list quality, well researched inventory then it sells. Period.
As for a store, you just have to crunch the numbers to see if a store is in your best interest. Guess what – ebay has a calculator for that! http://www.fees.ebay.com/feeweb/feeillustrator

I love looking at the fee illustrator. It gives me a great idea of when to make the move up to a bigger store level.

Yeah, I calculated all my numbers prior to subscribing and turns out that in the past 30 days I would have actually owed $4 more in fees w/ the basic store subscription. I’m sure it’ll help save money once I start listing a lot more stuff. Once I teach my wife everything, we’ll be able to really start knocking stuff out faster.

There is a tipping point for each store level. I had a basic store, and found my tipping point was right around 500 items sustained inventory that made more sense to go to a mid-level store. Getting a store before you are at that tipping point is a good thing – it will drive you to get your minimum stock inventory up to a level where you aren’t losing money on the store.

Yeah, I totally agree. I think that’s what it’ll do for me. I’ve got the inventory…now if I can just get it all listed!

When I first opened up a store about a year or so ago… I noticed a definite drop in my extremely consistent sales, by over 40%… (even though I was doubling my listing efforts). This drop lasted for about 2 months, and then I gradually climbed to my prior point and then surpassed prior levels and have continued steady growth ever since. It was very discouraging at the time, to say the least, and that first month I deeply regretted opening up the basic store and locking in for 12 months only to find my sales almost dip in half unexplainably! So if you find yourself in this situation, my advice is to trudge through it and just continue to list, you will break through and find yourself making even more money than previously as you continue to fill your store. I definitely feel I was “limited” in some way (Coincidence, or Intentionally?) Who knows.. but things are just fine now. Just wanted to share my experience…

Glad to hear it didn’t last long for you. My sales are up 18+% and gaining from last month, so I’m happy I made the switch. Hopefully it stays like this!
