Take a look at this article: https://www.blog.size.ly/blog/what-your-need-to-know-about-the-modern-online-shopper?utm_source=sendinblue&utm_campaign=D4stu&utm_medium=email
It reports on a large scale study identifying over 135 specific insights on the modern online shopper such as how the generations shop, where they shop, when they shop (43% at night in bed!) and how frequently, who spends the most and how much of their budget, what they buy and where for broad categories, what influences their decisions to purchase and what they hate (they hate paying for shipping the most).
The study authors maintain that online shopping continues to increase at a dramatic rate, and online shopping tops the list of what the study participants “can’t live without” when choosing among other convenience technologies such as smartphone GPS, streaming TV, car hailing apps, etc. Good news for us!
It’s very interesting big picture information, but reading about how the study was conducted I think the participants skewed toward people who buy new consumer goods online. Not sure that a study heavy with many of our typical collector buyers would have produced the same data.
I also found interesting the three links in the first paragraph. Two of the links are to the companies that conducted the study – they are apparently “big data” firms in retail.

Interesting survey. I charge for shipping but offer free returns. I sell lower priced items so free shipping AND free returns is not feasible. Ebay loves to give buyers what they want. Can’t help but wonder if they’ll require free shipping both ways someday. I know many sellers can work it in on high priced items and since there are few returns, it works out. Small ticket items is where it would hurt the most. Hope it doesnt go that direction. Thanks for sharing.

I like how they represent the parent shopper icon with bags under the eyes and frazzled hair.
It is interesting that shoppers hate paying for shipping more than anything else. I guess AMzon has us spoiled. I haven’t pulled the trigger on free shipping yet, either. I sell so many larger items and items overseas that it makes me too nervous. Looks like we’ll have to at some point though, but thankfully sales are still good and getting better as is.

Oh it’s definitely at the top of the list. Some people are happy with the illusion that they are getting “free shipping”. Others (like me) will shop around for the seller who is legitimately absorbing the cost of shipping and giving true free shipping when compared to other sellers.
Either way both buyers try to avoid paying for shipping.

Yeah, Free Shipping is an illusion but I understand its a successful gimmick.
Amazon Prime is now $119/yr. So you’re pre-paying for probably twenty items up front. (We always wait till we can buy $35 worth of Amazon items to get free shipping even without Prime).
Like RetroWV, we just go by total price and find the best deal. So many sellers with free shipping just roll the shipping price into the cost, making it not a great deal.

Amazon Prime for folks that only use the shopping aspect isn’t much of a saving. I’ve had it for years now and wouldn’t give it up for the world! Not only do I have free and fast shipping, but my items are cheaper (I pay $19.99 for a t-shirt and get it in 2 days, a non-Prime friend paid $27 and it took a week – actual history.) Also, I have an Echo and get free music, podcasts, radio stations, books, and a host of other stuff. I have Amazon Prime video, Prime Books, First Reads, Prime Day, Prime Music, Prime Audio Books… I’m sure there’s more, but as I use it all the time now, I don’t think I register it any more.
That $119 is paid for over and over and over again. If I had to pay for everything I get out of it, I’d be paying a lot more. It’s a huge saving for me.
I recently introduced a friend to Prime and all it has to offer. She’s astounded by how much she didn’t know it had.

Yup – the Prime fee is totally worth it for me, too. I use Prime Video all the time (it has the Handmaid’s Tale so I didn’t have to get Hulu), plus I get really good prime member discounts/sales at whole foods, and it also enabled me to get a prime credit card that gives me 5% cash back at whole foods. And I placed 39 Amazon orders in 2018. I didn’t know (but am not surprised) about prime audio books – will have to check that out.

My dad has prime, and I sometimes use his benefits. One thing is Amazon photos. I have the app on my iPhone and use it to back up all my photos including eBay.

Thanks for the tip, Sharyn – I’ll have to check that out as well.
