Hubby and I have been wanting to go to one for a long time but they have been intimidating for us. It was actually a lot of fun! We didn’t try to bid on much because we wanted to observe mostly. Well at first it was a little bit different from what we imagined. The auctioneer guy went from table to table and started bids at um, buyers choice? I think it’s called? At first we were so confused! LOL
But then we caught on and we went ahead and bid on some later tables. The funny thing is that I got so flustered because everyone watches to see what you’ll grab that I felt I grabbed the things I didn’t really want as much and left behind the things I did eyeball more so.. UGH… LOL .. just gotta laugh at myself but it’s okay. I still got some interesting things and yes, a couple of duds.I do want to give myself some credit in the sense that the tables we didn’t bid on but observed.. the people always grabbed the first thing that I was eye-balling the most so that gave me a feeling that I do have an eye, I hope? lol .. yeah, but then I let my nerves go crazy when I did bid on a table and picked up things I thought were interesting but not as interesting as a couple other things I left behind and was kicking myself and saying what was I thinking?!! LOL
So anyway, we spent $100 on things. Hubby grabbed his old vintage matchbox cars and some old tonka cars. I picked up some very unique bookends with an artist signature, a large bag of vintage christmas ornaments, an indian head cookie jar ( slight dud), another set of bookends from the 90s ( also a dud), a vintage 70s french limoges plate (probably a dud too), a neat Kreiss figurine dated 1959, a neat advertising tin for zippo lighter, and a print of victorian era fox hunting scene (also probably a dud). Exciting and so much fun despite the duds and getting flustered. I just have to get used to it. All will sell in time so it’s no biggie. Plus I will make more than the $100 bucks back on a handful of items so the rest will be okay all in all. I know it happens to all of us. lol. and each item is averaging me about a cost of $2 each so that’s another way of looking at it which is great. 🙂Hubby already sold one of his old matchbox cars that went to Canada. I do have a lot of listing to do because I won a lot of vintage jewelry from shop.goodwill to try my hand in the vintage jewelry category. Probably all is going to end up as long-tail and I probably won’t dabble too much in it after this little adventure, lol, but I am happy with the quality and some even have makers marks too. So it’ll be a couple of weeks before I can do more sourcing.

We’re going to an auction in the morning. They’re fun. The biggest danger is going to too often and buying too much too fast!

Auctions are my favorite place to source inventory. I did make a mistake on the very first thing I purchased at an auction and paid too high. I wasn’t used to it and bid too fast. I eventually got the hang of it. I occasionally still buy items that I regret later or pay too much, but the majority of my purchases are good. There is some waiting between items I want to come up, and I get kind of tired or zombie like after a while. But, I definitely enjoy the experience.
The auction I go to doesn’t really do buyer’s choice or bid a whole table at once. You bid on a box of stuff. They keep adding boxes together until someone is willing to purchase it for the minimum bid. They sometimes will pass over boxes if no one is bidding and come back to it later.
The other auction I go to is mostly new stuff like unclaimed merchandise or overstock. I am much more intimidated there. They go much faster, it’s more crowded, and most lots are large to huge. I attended about 4 or 5 of these auctions before I actually bought anything. I’ve been pretty happy with those purchases as well except for one, but I paid less than $10 so no big deal.

Maribel,
That Limoges from France, price high and sit. It should be a winner in time anyway. Of the two kinds of China I’m always looking for, English Bone China and Haviland Limoges from France, the latter is my preferred. Congrats on your auction!

Hi Marjean. I hate to say it but once I further researched this plate is a complete dud! LOL
But I did use totally different keywords and made a more Christian Catholic title rather than a collectible plate. It emphasizes the Nativity and Christmas theme rather than limoges and collectible, yada yada… it’s probably not going to help it much but hey I gotta do something to help it be different. LOL.. sighAnyway here is the link to it if you are curious.
