Overnight I sold a jacket for $599.95. I’m definitely insuring it, but would you guys also use signature confirmation? I know some buyers hate this as they have to be home to receive it, but I don’t like the idea of the package just sitting on a porch somewhere when it’s this $$$. Here’s the jacket if you are curious lol:

Doesnt eBay require signature conformation over a certain amount (Im not the shipper in the family).
The obnoxious thing about signature conformation is when a seller doesnt tell you they added it. Just let the buyer know to they need to sign for it, assuring them that its for their protection.
Congrats on the sale! What kind of jacket was it?

A vintage McGregor jacket that was made of dairy cow lol. The link above has pics π Words don’t do it justice π
I didn’t know that about Ebay requiring signature confirmation over a certain amount. OK, that makes me feel better about adding it. I’ll message the buyer about it too.

I missed the link in your original message. What an incredible jacket. Those are the rare finds!

It was so hard to value though. It had actually sold once before on best offer to what looked like a really well known vintage seller/designer. He never paid! This time I put it up at auction with the $599.95 BIN and it sold within the same day (within hours actually) to what seems to be a vintage buyer/seller. I hope I valued it correctly…I thought that that was a high BIN but maybe it really wasn’t? I agree that it was a super rare find!

I believe signature required is always an option but pre selected for high dollar sales, you can always deselect it.
Iβve often messaged the buyer and asked if they would like it or not. Itβs not free.-

Ryanne just said she thinks its required for items over $750, but she’s not sure.

As I understand it, once USPS drops the package off, they mark it as “delivered.” As far as eBay and Paypal are concerned, at that point you are off the hook. It is the buyer’s responsibility once it hits the porch/mailbox, and if it comes up missing they have to contact their local USPS and/or police. So signature confirmation really only helps the buyer. I generally don’t use it but am happy to if someone asks.
Great jacket btw! Not everyone agrees with me, but if I can’t find a comparable, I always set my BIN price and then run it as an auction for one week. Then if it doesn’t sell I change it to a 30 day at the same price. Seems to work especially well with cool, one-of-a-kind things like your jacket. Congrats on that sale!

This is a good example of your case for auctions.

Yeah but I didn’t take my own advice…I put a BIN on it. I should have listed it at auction with a high start and no BIN I think. It seems like it sold too fast at that BIN price. Then again, maybe I just attracted the right buyer and that’s what it’s worth. I’m just really not sure as there wasn’t anything to compare it to.

What’s funny is the highest dollar sale I ever had on ebay sold within 7 minutes of me listing it.
The buyer wanted me to “drop ship” I told him no and cancel the sale. He said just “mail to my ebay address instead” and I did. Sale went thru ok and never heard from him again.Makes we wonder though if I priced that item too low. In the end I made plenty of profit so even if they resold the item again I don’t care.

Even if you left some meat on the bone, that’s still a really big bite you took! No regrets there if it were me.

Awesome sale! π
I always insure high dollar sales, and remember emailing a few folks post-sale re whether or not to add Signature Confirmation, and not hearing back from them within my short 1 day shipping timeframe. Going forward, I think with those high dollar sales, I’ll put a blurb in the listing, to give advance notice, that the purchase price includes insurance AND signature confirmation, for Buyer benefit, unless they waive the latter. Seems like it would cover all bases as well as can be.

I agree Auction Kenny! Who knows, maybe the buyer has access to a market that I don’t (like the Japan auction market where they sell vintage denim and other cool vintage stuff). It was one of my better sales of all time so I’m happy. It’s in the mail, and I definitely added Signature Confirmation for my own peace of mind. I understand that it only really protects the buyer, but for $2.55 I felt like it was a worthwhile investment.

IF you insure an item with a value of $500 or more the USPS requires signature confirmation. Only way to get around that is to under value the package, but not sure that is possible thru ebay. Most likely you would have to buy postage via usps.com “click & Ship” then put that tracking number into ebay or buy postage + insurance at the retail counter.
You can also select signature confirmation that can be signed by anyone at the address. That is probably a better option. I would give the buyer a heads up too.
Another option especially if the buyer is close to you is to ship via “overnight express” which includes signature confirmation for free. USPS will deliver over night express on Satuday’s to most zip codes. Express packages are usually delivered before 10 am.
USPS has a flat rate padded envelope for over night express, although I doubt that jacket would fit in a padded flat rate. USPS also has over night express boxes at the post office for free, but they are not flat rate.
Personally I insure everything with a sale value over $150. I would be more concerned with paypal protection on high value items vs ebay protection. Paypal requires signature confirm for values $250 and over. (for protection)

Ryanne is partially correct about the $750 number for eBay. For items $750 USD (or local currency equivalent) or more (based on the total amount of the sale, including the cost of the item, shipping, any other fees seller may charge, and any sales tax), proof of the recipient’s signature to confirm delivery is required to qualify for eBay Seller Protection, where such signature confirmation service is available from the shipping company. In such cases signature confirmation is supposed to be preselected when you go to ship. But eBay does not require it for the shipment, it can be deselected.
Many of us use Shipsaver to insure some shipments. Its coverage requires signature confirmation for jewelry over $500 and ALL laptops, phones, and related.

The buyer messaged me that he received the jacket and that he loves it, so it sounds like he’s keeping it for himself as opposed to reselling it. I did end up using signature confirmation and I insured it for the full selling price since it was a high-dollar item. In the future I’ll put a blurb about signature confirmation in my high-dollar listings just so the buyer is aware that I intend to use it.
