I listed two pairs of shoes. They weren’t very expensive. They were the identical size and almost identical shoes. One pair was damaged $17 and one was not $33. Like an idiot, I stored them in the same storage container.
Two days ago, someone bought the damaged shoes and of course I sent the good ones.
Today I sold the good ones… Oops.
What to do.. what’s the simplest way to handle this.
Since the shoes are the same size and almost identical, I wrote the first buyer and told her to keep the better shoes if she wants them. She can also return them for the damaged ones or even buy the damaged ones when I relist them. I imagine she won’t be unhappy, as she ends up with a nice pair of shoes for the damaged price.
I told the second buyer the truth and apologized. I offered her a discount on any item in my store. I have another pair of similar shoes, with a slightly different size. If she goes for them, I’ll give her a nice price.
I haven’t heard back from either one yet. Depending on what the second buyer decides, I may or may not end up with the defect. The truth is, I deserve it.. I screwed up.

Other sellers have shared the shipping mistakes they have made in this selling process, so you are not alone in making a shipping mistake. At least you were honest and handled it as a professional. That goes along way. You made a mistake and did so without intention, so while ebay policy may dictate a defect, I don’t know that it is deserved. If you get a defect, you may want to call ebay, explain the mistake, and ask for a one time courtesy removal especially if the rest of your selling record is in good shape. It would be interesting to know how the situation works out.

Don’t beat yourself up too much over it. It happens to the best of us. I had some Ralph Lauren shirts that I did this with a few years ago. They were the same color and had a very similar pattern. I learned from my mistake and started tagging all my items with skus.

They are the exact same style and exact same size 8.5 AAA, otherwise it wouldn’t have happened. They even look the same in the pictures. I generally make it a point to put items this similar in separate storage containers.
I marked the bag with the damaged ones, but never thought to mark the other ones to remind me there was an identical pair around. If I sold the good ones first, this wouldn’t have happened.
Yes, the SKU tags would prevent all of this.. I’m just not there yet.
I’m not going to worry about the defect.. one defect isn’t a big deal.
I appreciate the kind words..

Update.. Buyer one wants to return the wrong (better) pair of shoes for the correct ones. I instructed her to initiate a return and I would accept.
Per Ebay rep. Accept return.. receive return.. Go to post Office to get return label and send out correct shoes. (Doesn’t sound right to me?)
What happens if you select option to offer customer identical item? Do I still get the original back. The Ebay rep couldn’t answer this question. She couldn’t tell me what happens if I select it.
I gave up with Ebay rep and accepted return. Since return was initiated, how do I show Ebay I sent out correct shoes? or do I have to refund and list shoes again? Thanks.

I sent the wrong item a couple months ago. There was an option for me to print the replacement item postage on ebay and ebay tracked both items during shipment. If I remember correctly the buyer selected something like received wrong item as the reason and then I was able to select something like accept return and send replacement item. The instructions then said I was supposed to wait to receive back the return and then send the replacement.
But I just waited until it showed the return was shipped and then mailed the replacement since I felt bad because it was my mistake and didn’t want the buyer to have to wait long, but there was a warning that I was acknowledging that I received back the original item when I printed the replacement item postage.

Ok Thanks, that’s great information. The Ebay rep was not very helpful at all.
I was hoping to do the same thing, send the replacement once the return gets scanned. I’m trying to keep the buyer (1) happy, but I get the impression she doesn’t trust Ebay and thinks some type of “Bait and Switch” was done. As a result, I’m going slow.
Buyer 2 has now contacted me and is much more knowledgeable, regarding Ebay. She’s happy to accept whichever pair is available when Buyer 1 is resolved. Buyer 2 has been refunded, so there’s no urgency there.
Life is interesting…

Well, I received the shoes back from buyer one. I could have used an Ebay label to send the correct ones, but I think I would have ended up with a late shipping defect. I ended up paying retail and sent her the shoes she ordered. I sent the tracking number through Ebay messages.
Once the tracking showed delivered, I called Ebay and they closed the return case in my favor.
Buyer two was very happy to repurchase the shoes I had sent to buyer one in error.
Done is Done.. Lesson learned by me.
