Happy Black Friday 2020!
this may apply to no one – but I respect this forum.
I’ve only been unfaithful to eBay on Reverb, a sales site focused on musical gear which was purchased by Etsy late last year.
it has been a great experience all around but I wanted to share some experiences in compare / contrast as their approach is different than eBay. I’ve not used used Etsy so wonder if they are similar.
Listing is at no charge and pretty easy – no limits to pictures, several fields and categories / sub-categories that are applicable and condition choices that make sense.
Shipping is not as sensible as eBay as there is no “calculated” shipping, but you can use their estimator which will show you the most you would pay for shipping to the US, with UPS, post and FedEx ground.They must have quite a deal with UPS because the rates seem crazy cheap.
There are a lot of customers, and there is usually a purchase or offer very quickly. And the sell through is crazy fast, nearly everything goes within a month.
it’s a little crazy to list a guitar just above market with shipping and then have it sell the same day – forcing me to come up with a huge box.eBay does not seem to have that kind of “buyer fire!”
Fees were much lower but they’ve gone up, still a little less than eBay.
Two superior business practices – first, when you print the shipping label ( paid from balance) BOOM approved and sent to your bank account.
best of all, they offer “reverb protection” which is a self funded insurance program. If there is sproblrm, you can call them, and they take care of it. Last week I had a VERY questionable “inad” which they TOOK CARE OF with no problem. Is this an Etsy policy too???
Admittedly, this only applies to musical gear. But I will now BUY music stuff on eBay – but sell on Reverb.

Appreciate hearing about other platforms. Interesting that Etsy purchased Reverb because none of those features are true for Etsy.
My hunch may be a new site will offer really good shipping, good returns policies, good payouts, low fees….to get customers. Then it becomes business as usual.
I remember when people were selling on Depop and Poshmark and it was all very easy and cheap. Not sure if its the same now that their venture capital is starting it run out.
Or Reverb may just do a really good job. Wish I had musical instruments to sell!

I tried training myself on the old beat-up violins that regularly appeared at the local auction house, i.e. looking at them at the viewing and then trying to correlate the realised prices with the different characteristics. Then I saw a violin bow fetch £1,000, and that took me down a whole other rabbit hole. I still don’t know nuffink, but I have the impression violin appraisal might be easier than guitar appraisal, so long as you use a tape measure. The difference between full-size, 7/8 and 3/4 is in half-inches, but the price differential is bigger!
