Scavenging in Costa Rica - Scavenger Life

  Hey everyone,
  The hubs and I are headed to Costa Rica in 2 weeks and I am racking my brain for things I can scavenge while we are there. 🙂 all I got so far is coffee…any other ideas? I’ll buy an extra bag if I need to!

  Never been to Costa Rica, but take an extra bag no matter what.
  You never know what you’ll find.
  What we look for are common items that are cheap that would sell for good money in the US.
  
  When we were in Colombia, we were surprised how bad the coffee was. Every coffee shop served the worst coffee we tasted. Locals told us that the country exported all the good coffee. So make sure you try it out before you buy in bulk!

  Mexico and Central America in general only serve nescafe. I never understood it. The only place I remember getting a good cup of coffee was in some leftist cafe in Southern Mexico. Well, I guess some fancier restaurants had cappuccino, but overall it was just nescafe everywhere. I can’t really think of anywhere in Costa Rica that has good places to shop. The main mercado is full of flea market junk. The small towns by the water are typical beach towns. Ecotourism throughout the country. Not really a good place to go with the intention of resell.

  There are so many native products that are wonderful but may not sell for much in the states. I’ve never been to Costa Rica, but I’ve lived next door in Panama which shares many of the same craft work. You couldn’t get this back in your suitcase, but they have some fabulous handmade furniture. Hand carved spirit masks are doing well on ebay. Without checking the ended listings, pre-Columbian art and jewelry might do well.

  We just got back and I ended up picking up some pottery. We also went to Nicaragua for a day trip and found some crafty stuff for souvenirs and possibly to resell.
  
  I did see a consignment shop near Tamarindo though…but we were on a mission to get to the next place in our janky 4WD so we didn’t stop. And then Google maps took us a totally different way back to our hotel (through streams and up mountains).
  
  A word of advice for those who want to visit: bring or rent a GPS (download CR maps before you come) as there are really no highway signs…and no street lights to speak of in the smaller towns so we would have been totally lost without a GPS!
  
  Costa Rica is a beautiful country with awesome people and I highly recommend it!
