Brian Boberg sent us this list of terms we have all spoken of over the past several years. Thought I’d share:
The Scavenger Life Glossary of Terms
and Phrases
Auction: An option by which an eBay listing can be established that allows prospective buyers to bid on a
listing for a pre-defined period of time.
Box Lot: Multiple items purchased in a group for a single price.
Buy-It- Now or BIN: An option by which an eBay listing can be established that allows the buyer to pay a
stated price.
Car Boot Sale: A group of sellers in England who display merchandise for sale using the trunks of their
vehicles. Similar to a swap meet in the U.S.
Conspiracy Theory: Unsubstantiated claims or beliefs that are communicated as though they are based
on facts. These theories are often perpetuated for an extended period of time and can be difficult to
successfully denounce.
Crappy Job: A job with low pay, minimal or no fulfillment normally undertaken working for someone
other than oneself.
Death Pile: A group of merchandise purchased with the intent of reselling, however, the seller is
reluctant to list the items for sale because the merchandise is boring, low margin or forgotten.
Debt: Money owed. A state which is to be avoided or reduced unless taking it on will enhance your long-
term wealth or happiness with life.
Eat on it: Purchasing food economically in quantity that can be consumed over an extended period of
time.
Experiment: To perform a new activity on a limited basis to judge the merits of the endeavor and to
determine the viability of expanding the activity within a business.
eBay: An Internet platform for selling pretty much anything for profit. Moneys earned here can be used
to finance other projects and or to create a more pleasant independent life.
eBay Forums: A forum on of the eBay web site where non-productive discussions often occur between
people who basically want to vent frustrations instead of working to improve their selling skills or
resolve issues.
eBay Store: An eBay store subscription provides a seller on the eBay site with certain advantages in
exchange for a recurring monthly or annual fee. These stores cone in 3 sizes, Basic, Professional and
Anchor.
Fall update: Same as the Spring Update, expect the announcement is made during the Fall timeframe of
the year.
Fourth Quarter: The last three months of the calendar year, which includes the Christmas/Hanukkah
holiday period when eBay, Amazon, etc. sales are normally elevated.
F*** You Money: A vulgar term which can be used to refer to the option an individual has to take on a
job or task. The individual is not beholden to the job offer due to lack of income and or lack of other
options for earning income allowing the individual to negotiate better terms or to decline the job offer
entirely.
Fugazi: An American post-hardcore band. Also an acronym for, “F****d Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In”.
Goodwill: A nonprofit merchant of primarily pre-owned donated items.
Jay Dedman: Co-host of the, “The Scavenger Life” web site and podcast. All around good guy.
Listing: Making an item available for sale on eBay, Amazon, Craigslist or other similar sites.
List-it- and-forget- it: Listing an item on eBay or other similar sites with no intention of reducing the price
at a later date.
Long Tail: An item that sells, but after having the item listed for sale for an extended period of time.
Make-Offer: An option by which an eBay listing can be established that allows the buyer to offer a price,
which is normally lower than the stated listed price.
Old-Time- eBayer: A person who has been selling items on eBay since the early days of the site and is
often resistant to change.
Pay Pal: An online payment processing service. An online financial intermediary between a seller and a
buyer.
Pipeline: A selling methodology on eBay and other similar sites in which many items are listed for sale
with the understanding that the items may not sell right away, the results may not be realized in the
short term, but the listing process is continued regardless in order to reap the benefit over an extended
period of time. The benefit may be realized later, when less effort is expended and the seller may be
busy with other projects or activities. This methodology can provide the seller with a steady stream of
income over an extended period of time.
Project: An activity often undertaken with the goal of making a profit via a means which also provides
positive mental gratification.
Route (r-ow- t), route (root): Two different ways to pronounce a way or course taken in getting from a
starting point to a destination depending on whether you are from Massachusetts or Texas.
Ryanne Hodson: Co-host of the, “The Scavenger Life” web site and podcast. All around good person.
Savers: Similar to Goodwill
Scammer: A buyer who appears to buy an item, but whose objective is to extract money. free or
reduced priced merchandise from a seller.
Scavenger: See “Trash Elf”.
Scavenger Life: A web site and podcast which has the goal of sharing information primarily related to
selling merchandise on eBay and possibly other similar sites. The podcast also serves to document the
lives and activities of the site’s proprietors, Jay Dedman and Ryanne Hodgson.
Scavenger Life Forums: A section of the Scavenger Life web site which allows individuals to share
thoughts and make comments on various topics related to on-line selling.
Silent Treatment: Not responding to a troublesome buyer who is trying to extort a refund or partial
refund for merchandise purchased from the seller.
Shipping Nerd: Someone who has an inordinate interest in packaging, the U.S. Post Office or other
shipping related activities.
Spring Update: The announcement by eBay of changes to the selling and or buying agreement for
merchandise listed for sale on eBay. This announcement occurs in the Spring time of the year.
Thrift Sale: A relatively small amount of pre-owned merchandise for sale from a merchant with a
physical location.
Thrifty: The act of making good use of a resource.
Time: The precious unit of human existence that should be spent in a productive, healthy and satisfying
experience. Some humans become Trash Elves to gain more control over this entity.
Trash Elf: A person who scavenges for items for free or for low cost and sells the items online for a
(hopefully) significantly higher price on sites like eBay, Craigslist, Amazon or other similar web sites and
participates in a low-debt, live-within- your-means lifestyle.
Trucker Hat: A hat or cap similar to a baseball cap normally involving a mesh material which has
traditionally been worn by truck drivers. These hats are available for purchase at truck stops for a small
amount of money or on sites like eBay. Many of these hats can become collectible over time.
What Sold Video: A video, posted on the Scavenger Life web site which depicts some of the items that
were sold during the previous week. Originally, these videos were posted by the hosts of the site, but
other people are encouraged to also post their videos. Steve Schultz frequently posts these videos on
the Scavenger Life web site.
wheresthecoupon.com: A web site run by David Hall which can be used to easily locate the eBay
Subscriber’s Discount page. This site can also be used to register for an email reminder to utilize the
quarterly eBay coupon. This coupon can be used towards certain eBay branded supplies like packing
tape, poly mailers, bubble mailers, cardboard boxes, etc. The coupon is available for eBay store
subscribers.
Yard Sale: Similar to a thrift sale, but normally conducted at a person’s home and conducted for a brief
period of time like one day.

Love it.
When I hear the term ‘eat on it’ I picture Jay with this animal carcass that you ‘eat on’ for days, head down, watching for other scavengers who want a bite.
Great list. Made me chuckle.
