I have a few chances to do some in-person scavenging this week which I am excited about. It’s been a while. I’ve been very focused on my trading card sales for the last month or two.
I did some good online scavenging last week. Maybe it was because last week was a holiday, maybe it was random as it usually is, but I won all sorts of auctions for great prices throughout the week. I ended up with a huge $500+ invoice from one of my favorite trading card consignment sellers which was full of all sorts of interesting (and expensive!) items. A few of the cards should cover most of the order, with the highlight being this Woodward and Bernstein (of Watergate fame) cut autograph for $40.
I also picked up a pair of Charles Conlon signed and authenticated photographs. The linked one cost me about $15 and this one cost me $50. Neither of the players on the photographs are wildly famous, so the difference in cost is mostly based on the notes on the back. Conlon was one of the earliest sports photographers. I did a lot of research on his signatures since these items are a little outside my wheelhouse, but I’m confident I should get $200 (or more?) for each of these as long as I’m patient.
I’m not a comic book or sci-fi person at all, but this seller had dozens of collectible action figures and statues and other memorabilia for auction all week, and I won some of them. Here’s the rundown:

Kevin Lau’s Vampi laser rifle for $10

Some kind of DC Comics cookie jar for $10

I haven’t received the order yet, so it will be interesting to see the condition of the boxes and items and how that affects sell through rate and price. I need to do a little more research on a few of them. Some have a nice selling history and others are a bit rarer and harder to place. Fun to step outside my usual niches and mess around with some new items.
As if that’s not enough, I had two other interesting weird items from this order. First is this brass Zoroastrian statue for $5. I have no idea what this is worth or if I will ever get around to listing it, but I thought it was cool and put in a $5 bid. Even if it’s only a decoration for my future home, I’m happy to have won it.
Last, and maybe best, is this miniature golf cart signed by Bryson DeChambeau for $25. I need to get it authenticated, which will add $20 to $50 to the cost, but DeChambeau is one of the best golfers and this is such a weird item. It might go for $200 (or more?) to the right buyer, especially if I’m patient enough to wait for DeChambeau to win a big golf tournament.
Maybe the biggest score of all on this order was the combined shipping, which was just $60 total despite a ton of bulky items with high individual shipping cards.

Ah man, I’m starting to miss the summer yard sales. Sooo much AWESOME stuff was found this year! Thrift stores are mainly just bread n butter boring stuff now to the point that when I go to post about my finds I draw a blank for a while. Once upon a time amazing stuff was always there, but not anymore. Ah they days of finding a near complete Voltron Castle of Lions for $3, or 5 pair of Buckle Jeans for $5 each back when they were HOT TICKET items are long gone. It would be so cool to live somewhere that yard sales happen all year long.
My highest value purchase was a set of brand new left handed Men’s Golf Clubs for $35. They’re a cheaper brand but for a throw away 12 club set $150 is a great price. I have them listed on FBMP for $150. Ironically I sold a pair of Left hand kids clubs the same day I picked these up.

The cross branding with shoes is something else. I’ve got a pair of Cocoa Puffs crocs (kids or maybe even toddler sized) that I should really get listed over the next week of two so it ends up in someone’s Christmas or holiday stocking. I don’t get the appeal, but I’m always happy to find weird items like this because someone will just love them.
I guess selling on FBMP shipping isn’t really an issue. Do you ever ship a set of golf clubs? That sounds complicated. But maybe FBMP and local pick up are the way to go with these big bulky things.

I just saw an advertisement for McDonald’s Crocs. The Grimace ones are pretty sweet.
I’ve shipped plenty of individual clubs. I haven’t ever shipped a full set but it wouldn’t be a big deal to. I’ve shipped items similar in size/weight to a golf club set. It requires joining two boxes one way or another along with some resizing. I just prefer selling the full sets local on FMBP. I take a couple pictures and throw them in my smaller shed and forget about them until they sell.

Great info as always. I don’t know anything about golf but considering my sports memorabilia niche, probably should educate myself as much as I can.
Need to get my Cocoa Puffs Crocs shoes photographed and listed soon. What a weird niche. But it will definitely sell sooner than I think!

I haven’t been to California since I was too little to remember it, so that would be a fun trip in a lot of ways. It certainly would be one way to learn about comic books! Not sure I can make a trip happen in the next month or two (mostly from lack of space for more inventory, also just busy with life), but let me know what you hear about the sale anyway. If they do liquidate, I assume there will be some deals available and I love those stories. Maybe you will even start selling some comic books!!!
That apothecary jar is gorgeous. In all my attempts to scavenge at thrift stores and estate sales and flea markets, I’ve never seen glass half as eye-catching as the things you find on a weekly basis. Every area is different, I guess. Plus when you know a niche well, you can spot the gems even if they’re a little dusty or hidden away.
