I did really well this week finding interesting items and paying well below my max price. If only ever week was like that!
A few items similar to ones I’ve sold before came back around my way: this Evgeni Malkin signed mini hockey stick will be an easy flip from $30 to $100, though I might price it closer to $200 since his career’s winding down. I’ve sold one copy of this jersey booklet of Yankees greats Reggie Jackson and Lou Piniella and I have one currently in my store, so why not pick up a third? Modern memorabilia cards of retired players are one of those items where you have to wait, wait, wait and all of a sudden your perfect buyer finds the listing and pays full price or close to it. Auctions are not a great way to sell these types of cards because you’re looking for a collector, not a flipper. Some collectors browse eBay every day and have unlimited funds, but most are normal people with lives and jobs and a budget.
The area I’ve learned the most about this year is vintage non-sport cards, and I’m seeing those items everywhere now that I’m looking for them. Funny how that works! I know I’ll do well with these graded 1940’s naval cards because the 9 mint grades are quite high for a 1940’s card. Definitely send these to consignment and probably will send all 3 to live auctions. They seem like obvious candidates to get a quick bidding frenzy up to the $10 to $20 range.
And, as a little add-on from one of my favorite card consignment sellers, I picked up this old felt South Beach, SJ pennant for $2 as well as a Statue of Liberty pennant which I will not link because I just noticed it had a crease down the middle as I was writing the post. I hope the SJ (San Juan? San Juan Islands?) pennant is not also creased. But for $2 each? Worst case, I’ve got some new stuff to hang on the walls. Now that’s the scavenger’s life!
What did you find this week?

I didn’t buy very much this week after the glut of hoarder stuff last week. I was only looking for homeruns.
I bought a couple outfits from this super entertaining older woman at one sale for $3 each. They are WILD designer outfits from parties she went to at the Greenbrier Resort over the years. That lady brings da party wherever she’s at – what a hoot! Each outfit will sell for $100+ based on comps but will likely be long tail. One’s a pink leather & crochet set. Another is a Cowgirl set that looks like something Dolly Parton would wear. The last sale of the day I scored two pair of women’s riding boots for $15 each – Tory Burch & Burberry. SCORE!! The Tory Burch boots will be listed for $100 and the Burberry ones for $200.
At Goodwill the buy of the week was an aquarium water filter system that sells for $100-150 in used condition.

Not much scavenging this week at all. Super busy. But there is PLENTY of hoard waiting for me to list. An old scavenge from my trip to the Bay Area is a covered casserole dish in this pattern, paid $16 https://www.ebay.com/itm/375065283274?itmmeta=01J01AWCADNTETZSEAE98PXD2X&hash=item5753a20aca:g:quIAAOSw-GJlWP23&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8KWQ7UyiQ%2BfAFxsZnLv%2FFb9%2FJsaGh8SS6WDW%2Bv1HIL%2F3G5O0QilwtlydtSMqfSZARII4ZtJttgb8XSrvyvIKe7Ry8OLBIIndzPGbGzXILkKqvpz4KxYEsWJ%2FuAt5v5BN0st5gSJN3xGJ8QW9Cf0S849LN0TpmP30wLPku9hvRRjjjRtmtTrmgOZntn5Am97jeDEdMWVqhfd4Fnv7JF2ntrSycAckr1iut53MIERHhVg19nGzWEChrtmHOqokVdO16hrxkkkvtxFDKw0gKPzqZChxfVvqpLmbODlHUrrrrS%2BIQdS5VGyBhXq2ZQ6fDB8KKg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMpsXxqoBk

Is that consignment business really paying $2.40 per listing to promote their business in the subtitle?
The UK price for a subtitle is £2.40! 3 dollars 6 cents.

US subtitle is similarly expensive! But every big consignment seller I source from on eBay uses a subtitle on almost every listing to promote their business. Complete with “unique” taglines which all basically say the same thing. This must be a freebie feature with a large enough store, though I still don’t understand the point. Are they getting customer referrals from…a subtitle?

On Monday I took one of my kids to a Cybersecurity camp at a local university. Since it was out of my way I just worked remotely and hung out in the lobby all day. Conveniently (Mwahahahaha) that allowed me to hit up one of my favorite thrifting spots in the area during lunch – the State Surplus equipment warehouse.
Now I had limited van space since I still have most of the latest hoarder haul in there so I had to be picky. They still had a good assortment of toner cartridges and a few high value copier maintenance kits that sell for $100+. I picked up the better STR, higher value items from that pile. I also picked up one of these for $50:

That one sold for $750. How do I know that? Well spoiler alert- terapeak shows actual sales prices. I have the listing created and will make it live this weekend.
There were many more larger items I COULD have bought. The one that really caught my eye was an entire Pallet of new in box Rack mount UPS units. $50 each!!!! Oh man…soooo heavy…..sooooo big….but sooooo much profit! If I had Jay and Ryanne’s Warehouse style space I would have totally got them. Alas, I am out of space.

This state surplus warehouse sounds like my kind of place. I can’t wait until I am in a larger place with more room for storage.
What kind of foot traffic does the warehouse get on a daily basis? All I can think to compare it to are Goodwill bins, which have been a madhouse every time I’ve ever gone. But since it’s state run and equipment, you probably miss out on a lot of truly terrifying scavenging creatures.
If your van wasn’t full, or if you had twice as much storage space, how much do you think you would have spent? My guess is between $500 and $1000 based on the couple things you mentioned, and maybe even higher.

Not much traffic. Every time I’ve been there I’m usually the only one there. Some of their prices are laughably high, and some are amazingly low. They are all over the place. They’ve had several pallets of old video projectors for a couple years that nobody wants. Mainly because their prices are $75 each. If they blew them out for $10 each I would take every one of them if I had the space.
They are only open on weekdays until 4, so very limited hours.
They have alot of large office furniture and equipment. Some of it is pretty high end stuff. Some of it is junk.
