It was a nice week of diverse sales in my small store — my gross sales were right around the old podcast benchmark of $1000, and 49.79% of my sales were in trading card singles, so random items really saved my bacon this week.
This Willie Mosconi signed pool cue sold for full price of $99.99 within a day of listing, after sitting on a shelf since I had bought it (and posted about it) in late May. I paid about $30 with shipping. I dilly dallied on listing it because I thought shipping would be obnoxious. But the stick unscrewed into two pieces, so I wrapped each piece separately and sent the box on its way for a mere $11.34. Another lesson to always list the weird oddball stuff that you’re not sure about.
This Kappo Kaako (New York Rangers hockey) autographed framed photo display is sitting on the floor right now wrapped in bubble wrap, since it sold this weekend. Paid just $5 and sold for $33.99. I’ll probably use one of my cache of regional priority boxes to ship, which will eat into my total profit, but this sold in just a few days which I’m thrilled about.
This PSA certified Cuban League photo has an interesting story behind it. I bought it in late May for about $15, then listed it based on the info in the authentication letter, which stated that the photo was of a Mexican League team called Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo. After the listing was up for about a month, an interested buyer sent me a message to tell me, essentially, that the PSA authentication letter was incorrect. They are a big collector of Nuevo Laredo everything and my photo was definitely not Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo, in fact it was probably from a different league entirely. I did a little research and realized that this person was 100% correct. So I pulled the listing and did some more research, and by that I mean I typed in variations of the name on the uniform until I figured out that the team that in the photo was an old Cuban League team called Cienfuegos, more commonly known as the Elefantes because of their colorful elephant logo. So I made a new listing with the correct information, and to my slight surprise it sold this weekend for $60 after another month or so. I paid about $20, so I’ll make about $25 profit after shipping and fees. Less than I thought originally but I’m happy, considering how easily this could have led to a return case.
I am down to my last Sleeping Beauty eyeshadow palette after another sale at my full price of $70. This was a random find from a small eBay cards seller who must have bought this limited edition makeup using bots. They had a quantity listing of about 20 listed at a price of about $20 each even though there were higher Terapeak sales at the time. If I found a stash like this now, I’d buy them all, but even though I didn’t go all in, I still made a few hundred profit on this buy. Another reminder that not everyone who flips things knows what they’re doing.
I had a few cool trading card sales too, as I continue to focus less on individual trading cards in my eBay store, since I can just as easily sell them in my consignment port for slightly higher selling fees but with the company handling all the shipping and scanning. So the individual cards in my eBay store fall into three categories: cards which are time sensitive (hot new players, basically), cards I’ve acquired in quantity (very easy to make a new listing once one sells) or ones that are valuable and interesting enough that I know I’ll list them quickly.
I had two sales from the third category this week, this Whitey Ford (1950s Yankees pitcher) 2001 Topps Heritage card with a piece of his uniform from the Korean War ($31.99) and a John David Washington 2006 Playoff Contenders autographed rookie card for $65. I have another copy of the Ford card which I’ve already listed and a few more JDW autographs in my consignment port, so I shipped one back to me and will get that relisted as soon as it arrives. The JDW card has an interesting story behind it too.
John David Washington, Denzel’s son, has starred in movies like Tenet, Beckett and BlacKkKlansman and before he was an actor, he was a football player. Basically a minor league player, but JDW played at the right time where companies made enough sets that he still got a few cards. It would have been a bummer to open a box of Playoff Contenders fifteen years ago and one of your autographs was this random backup running back who didn’t even make the team, but now they have some value. JDW is the star in the new sci-fi movie The Creator, which comes out this Friday, and has some really strong early reviews. So who knows, maybe I will sell out of the rest of his autographed cards within a few weeks. If I do, maybe I will take some of my profits and enjoy his new movie in the theater this weekend. That feels appropriate, like exactly what a scavenger’s life should be.
What did you sell this week?
